Is there a way to suggest theaters for Anime Movie Night events? I'm interested in them, but the theaters showing Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress in my area were pretty bad. Looking over the theaters for this event seems about the same.

You have a much greater chance of this happening if the theater is independently owned. But the way it works is mostly like this:

Booking for films happens up the corporate ladder. The General Manager of a specific theater is pretty much only in charge of scheduling times, not what specific movies or how many times a day a it plays. However, what they can influence is reporting on their demographics. If they have a large Indian (Asia India) community in the area, that theater can have a larger variety of Bollywood movies assigned to their theater. The same could be said for Chinese communities, Hispanic communities, and Anime communities. Anime releases in movie theaters are few and far between, so the measuring stick for deciding distribution is slapdash at best.

So the way it would go is like this: Go to the theater you want to watch anime movies in at let them know about your interest. If enough people come to them and ask about it, the GM will take note and report it back to higher up on the ladder. Now, when a new anime movie is released, they go through the booking dance and essentially rent out their anime movie to a number of screens per theater chain.

So lets take Ancient Magus Bride for example. It's being distributed through Screenvision Media. Screenvision Media rents out their film to 50 screens of AMC, 100 screens of Cinemark, and 75 screens of Regal (not accurate numbers btw). You want to watch Ancient Magus Bride at a Cinemark, well if you give feedback to the theater in your area, then the Booking Agent will know there's a dense anime community in your area and your theater will have a much higher chance of being selected. However, say you want to watch Ancient Magus Bride at a Cinepolis. In this case you're SOL because Screenvision Media never made a deal with Cinepolis.

Bottom line is always give feedback to your favorite theaters. If you fill out those surveys you see occasionally I can guarantee the vast majority of them get read. Speaking with the management always helps as well. You probably won't be able to flag down the big boss GM, but there should always be lower rank managers wondering around. Heck, if it's not busy you could even holler at an usher to call for one. Managers at movie theaters generally mingle with their customers far more than other businesses.

Yes, we will be adding theaters in Canada soon as well as additional theaters around the US! Please continue to check back at for the updated theater listings.

So am I missing the place where the Canada showing are announced?

Not that I expected anything in QC, but I at least though I'd see a few city in Canada having it by now . . .

Found out a town 1.5hrs away is playing this. Immediately bought tickets. Worth the 3hrs on the road to go watch a decent anime in theaters.

Now if/when they do the Irregular at Magic High movie at the same theater, I'm so doing it again.

Its in 2 days (less really at time of writing). Crunchy obviously couldnt book any in Canada for us or just straight out lied so we wouldnt make a stink on social before it came out.

I would rather them just say "We cannot show in Canada" then leading us on like this. I really do not get how they dont understand people generally prefer upfront honesty then string along BS.

So looks like it has been updated with Canadian showings....on August 21'st. Oh well, better late then never, but this wasnt the best way to let us know, would of been a lot nicer to tell us up front.

Thanks to CR for hosting another Movie Night!

The Ancient Magus' Bride adaptation was beautiful and magical – looking forward to the season!

Also looking forward to next episode of Children of Ether. Will this be the opening short for all Movie Nights? (btw LeSean Thomas' smile is infectious )

Good job!

Yay! I'm glad to see this coming to Canada this time. Does anyone know if CR has posters or any goodies for events?

The Good News:
Tickets are on sale at cineplex.com for the Canadian screenings on August 21st.
(There are links to the individual Theaters on the Anime Movie Night website)

The Odd News:
They switched from the Landmark Cinemas to the Cinelpex Cinemas, and it took an extra month. Whats up with that?

The Bad News:
They drastically reduced the number of theaters for Ancient Magus' Bride, compared to the number of theaters used for the previous screening of Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress.
Looks like there are only 7 theaters in Canada showing Ancient Magus' Bride. Maybe they'll add more, but I'm not going to count on it.
They are in:
Alberta -- Calagary
Manitoba -- Winnipeg
Nova Scotia -- Halifax
Ontario -- Peterborough, Ottawa, Oakville, and Toronto

Lastly:
Does anyone know why the US theater websites say that Ancient Magus' Bride is 1 Hour & 35 Minutes long, but for the Canadian screenings on cineplex.com the length of the movie is 1 Hour & 26 Minutes?
Should I worry about the 9 minute difference? Will the Canadian screenings have the same content that last months US screenings did?

1 hour and 26 minutes sounds more correct since the screening is the first 3 episodes. Even that indicates a length of a bit over 25 minutes per episode, while episodes are normally around a minute shorter.

I thought perhaps the US runtime included Children of Ether, but I note it is 14:28.
