What is everyone's views, opinions and memes about canada? Share for our 150th B-day!

*Disclaimer*

technically Canada was only born as a country 150 years ago but the colonies from Britain and France existed for quite some time before that.

I'd be more interested in discussing the opponents of the 150's claims that the celebration is celevrating something built on attempted aboriginal genocide.

I mean... They're not exactly wrong but at the same time we should be celebrating our unity as a country and the fact that we do so with people indiscriminately should be more than enough proof that we have moved past the dark times that people are understandably still pretty pussed off about.

We're pretty far removed from the colonial days and we acknowledge them in our history classes. It's not as if we're unaware. So I'm not entirely sure what else they would want? We're not turning Canada Day into a national day of guilt.

Well to be fair the whole residential schools shitshow was allowed to continue for an unreasonably long time, I think it only fully stopped around the time I was born so the attacks of the Canadian government on the aboriginal population are still fresh in everyone's minds and their harmful effects are still felt within the indigenous population today, so it's difficult for me to just say that its all ancient history. It doesn't help that there seems to be more than a little bias against aboriginal people in law enforcement currently. With that being said, I still maintain my position that the 150 celebration unites us and celebrates our relationship as a nation and thus should not be associated with discrimation and prejudice.

Oh definitely, and the Harper government didn't exactly handle aboriginal affairs well to put it mildly. But yeah, I don't think trying to sour Canada Day, given what it stands for, is going to help matters.

People want to make a big deal of it being Canada's 150th, and here I am only caring that it is the first day of NHL free agency.

Yea, I know right? I mean who the hell heard of Canada before? I was like I never heard of Canada go to War before. They're easy to take over by America, hell even Mexico probably can take over! :p

If America is Roman Empire, Canada would been no more!
