Wouldn't be a new season without a fresh brown drop from HAOLINERS. Soon as I saw the production card, I noped out--we're not doing this shit again.

Crunchyroll, PLEASE stop even bringing Haoliners' stuff over? It's all garbage.

First question I had: Why does one of the main characters wrap his braid around his neck like a noose?

And then all the clan politics and feuds that were thrown in and barely touched upon. There were just so many things about this first episode that made it more frustrating to watch rather than relaxing or fun. I will probably give episode two a watch just to see if this show even has a chance of gaining some sort of direction, but unless something major happens this will probably remain my biggest disappointments of the season.

The series is actually quite good, however, the main plotline does not really start until episode 5-ish. So you can watch through it, or check it out later. I will write up a post tomorrow detailing the background story and character for this series. Since the first season (and especially the edited Japanese version, more on that later) didn't do a good job at explaining them.

wow.... man, you could really tell that there were so many things missing from this particular episode.

First, the OP song and the animation did not match at all. They had this really somber, slow song but the actions of the characters in the animation seemed to be more fit for an upbeat, bubble gum style of OP song.

Then there are all of those action scenes which basically lacked even basic sound effects for some of the actions being taken. Like it was confusing to see that character use "crazy" Youkai powers but have no actual sound effect associated with their use.

Of course this is all not really even touching on the plot which seemed completely incomprehensible.

I make it a point to watch every anime show that comes out each season. At least I was able to make up my mind about this one fairly quickly.

The OP animated is cobbed together from Season 1 and Season 2 OP from the Chinese series. OP1 is exactly a bubble gum song, while the OP2 is considered a classic for the series. And you need to search on youtube for that one, since crunchyroll seem blocks it.

Some actions scenes has sound effect, some don't. There seems to be more sound effect in the Chinese version, I have no idea why they dropped them. There will a lot of action scenes toward the middle of the series, so let's hope they don't consistently drop the ball.

Ah, that makes more sense. I'll probably watch through it as it seems people enjoyed the original show, but I guess I will wait and see how it progresses. At least I know the actual reason for the hair style now, which is kinda neat. I look forward to reading your post later as, going by the first episode, I have little idea of what is going on or even what the maim focus is supposed to be.

Episode 2

And now, the focus is on Setsuyo as she once helped save a clan in what appears to be somewhere in Mongolia. Her partner ate a water jewel to save the day from some fat lady that had seized the village. Setsuyo and Han Unhi are together again, but she is marrying somebody else as that guy has money and stuff, and of course Gessho just won't let that slide. While parts of it were really funny, unfortunately the story is just a mess as I can't make sense of everything that is happening. At least it is better than what Haoliners usually puts out, but that's not saying much as anything they touch, you know it's going to be crap. I'll at least watch one more episode to see this marriage to ruin get thwarted.

Episode 2

Some of the characters are cute and some of the gags are funny, but those things alone can't glue the rest of this incomprehensible show into something watchable.

Here it's part 1 of the "guide", looks like it's going to be a multi-part thing, I'll probably need post a topic about it rather than just in the replies.

Here my review of the series.
4/5
An Amazing Anime/Donghua…. Only if you have the patience
Tl;dr: If you are able to finish the series, you’ll realize this anime/donghua is nothing like the first episode or the even first three episodes. Unless you hate romance, fantasy or plot twists, you’ll love the series.
Before I start, I have to say the first two episodes are very poorly done. I was looking forward to how they will improve the first season of this show, but instead they are making it worse. At this rate, it seems they want to finish the first season (134 minutes total) by episode 4 or 5 instead of episode 7 without edits. It is bold move, since the first season had the weakest story arc, the poorest animation and its plot has minimal impact for the entire series. However, by doing so, it cuts most of the setups nearly all jokes, and cuts most of the transitional scenes. While it made the first story shorter, but it also made it very confusing to watch especially for people without any context. However, if you decide to continue or even skip to later episodes, you’ll find an amazing story and lovely character (assume they don’t mess up the latter episodes). Also animation quality improves every season, I would not be surprised if the last season (last 10 episodes) had twice or even 3x the budget per episode compare to the first season (likely to last the first 5 episodes).
In later episodes, the comedy in the series is tuned down by at least 90% for later episodes, and it’s more likely that you’ll shed more tears than laughter for this show. So if you’re worried about 24 episodes of awkward jokes, don’t worry, but if you hate going through emotional rollercoasters, don’t watch it. If you’re not afraid of spoilers, I post a topic in the forums that detail the background and characters for the series.

Now, lets get into the background.
Note: all images from from this anime or from promotional material for the anime, since this post is detail its background and promote people's understanding of the subject and not used for profit. It is cover under the fair use clause under Title 17 U.S.C. Section 107.

Structure of the series:

The Japanese version covers episode 1-48 of Chinese release and the story has 3 main arcs with a 4th mini-arc embedded in the 3rd story arc. They are the following:

Sandfox Chapter (1-13 Chinese; 1-~6 Japanese)
This is a side quest primarily used to introduce characters and give you background of this world. So far this version is doing a poor job of it.

Wangquan Chapter (14-27 Chinese; ~7-~13 Japanese)
This is the main plot for our secondary characters and it serves as a setup and transition point to introduce our main plot.

Red Moon (Yue Hong) Chapter (28-48 Chinese, ~14-~24 Japanese).
This is the main plot for our two MCs, and it is the "meat" of the series.

The forth North Mountain Chapter is a side quest embedded in Red Moon covering Episodes 40-47 Chinese and likely 20-23 Japanese. It served to create a temporary end for the season.

In each chapter, the plots follows two timelines, one is in the present with character introduced in EP1, and one in the past with the past life of our objective characters.

Next post, I'll go over the series background

Background:

The series unveils its backstory very slowly, you will get a bit of information here or there, but it’s only until the middle of Red Moon Chapter you’ll have a good idea of the world these character inhabit. It’s basically this.

English annotation added by me

Since time immortal, yaoguai/youkai and co-existence with humans, with humans primarily serve as prey for the youkai as humans lacked neither strength nor magic to fight back. Sometime in the far ancient past, a group of humans discovered the use of cultivation and magic instruments to control Qi and perform magic of their own.

As humans are more intelligent and more deliberate in their cultivation, when combined with the right instruments to not uncommon for a humans with only decades of years of cultivation to defeat and kill a youkai with hundreds of years of cultivation. As humans fight back, an organization called Taoist Alliance (translated unification league by the Crunchyroll) was formed to protect humans and kill as many youkai as possible. In reaction to that, a youkai alliance was formed as well, so a never ending war ensues on the two sides with much bloodshed and mutual hatred on both sides.

Tushan (Toshan) with Kuqing tree at its center
Unlike most youkai, fox spirit cultivation via strong emotions, and Tushan, where our cute fox spirit came from, cultivates on love. For this purpose, Tushan offers a service to facilitate and unite human and youkai lover and works bring peace between humans and youkai. And ~500 years before the present timeline (EP1), the leaders of humans and youkai made a peace accord, and forged a fragile peace.

By the present timeline youkai and human view each other no more than how we view race or foreigners; magic, youkai true forms are permitted as long as it follows the law and people very used to see those as just we are used to seeing cars driving by. (But if the Youkai is too ugly or scary looking, people will still be startled) In a nutshell, the series is about how this peace came into being, and how our MCs would try to preserve it.

People's natural reaction to a youkai rabbit... take pictures and touch it fur.

to be continued.... I'll try to add character profiles next.

I don't know about this version but I watched a lot of episodes on this on YouTube last year. Yeah, I know, but cookies are a thing and the thumbnail had a pretty girl on it.

It's almost the dictionary definition of "Three episode rule". After the third I found it to be very sweet and will be adding it to my queue if it's available in my region.

Episode 2

Dramatic improvement on the first episode, with a clear sense of direction of what it was trying to do.

I actually really enjoyed this, the pacings a touch too quick, and some of our slower watchers will struggle to keep up

Well the second episode is better. As long as they can stitch the episodes better it wont be a trainwreck like the first episode. Also please change the opening to the original Chinese one..

....why are you noobs bitching about this Chinese title? Racist, much?

Having inspected the first episode, it is just fine. The animation and sound isn't top rate, but neither was stuff during the 1980s, either. Story/characters good. Read above posts by other users for details. Thank you for your consideration.

So what, you think Winter's "Handshakers" is "the best", now? This title does not deserve any on this whimpering post-Millenial hate as posted in this thread. Go back to daycare, u babies. The Shonen train is right-a-way over yonder...

Indeed, depending on how the rest of the CR season pans out vs FUNI dub, I may just have to resub here. So take that, ya cowering numbskulls.

Enough /condescendion for ya? Did I hurt your little ittie-bitty baby feelings? Going to go crying to Fourm Mommy Mods yet again? Of course you will...

But no matter...

Yeap things become better indeed in later seasons if the original Chinese dub is any indication, the first season was just odd compared to the rest from the franchise.
