For prior conversation in anticipation of this show, see /forumtopic-945191/touken-ranbu-getting-anime-adaptation-in-2017

The year is 1863, Japan is split between the pro-shogunate and anti-shogunate factions. In this chaotic time, the era of the swords is coming to a close. Horikawa Kunihiro has manifested as a Sword Warrior and is joined by Izuminokami Kanesada, a warrior who served under the same master as him. Sword Warriors are “Tsukumogami”, spirits and willpower that reside within a sword. These spirits are awakened by Saniwa to protect the world from the “Time Retrograde Army,” who were sent by historical revisionists from the future to alter history.

Well, it's pretty. I mean, it's ufotable so that's to be expected.

Can't say it really grabbed me at all. Nice to see them not totally shying away from violence and creepy enemy designs but nothing in the first episode really made me care at all about what I was seeing or what was going on. Kudos to the mascot character not being totally annoying and/or talking in a stupid voice though.

I'm sure a lot of people will love this, though, and I can already hear the shounen ai fandom at the door.

Episode 1

Well, this is much different than Hanamaru as Ufotable made everything eye candy. Some pretty serious stuff went down and Kunihiro is feeling conflicted about all this with preserving history even if it means letting those who he could save die. Pretty much it's stuff I expect from ufotable with the action.

ufotable delivers with the visuals once again. So this is basically time traveling samurais (or I guess living swords?) stopping the villains from changing history. Interesting concept. It has potential, but then again Zestiria's first episode also showed potential and then it quickly became generic RPG the anime... Hope this one is better.

If you're unable to play the game (such as in the US), Touken Ranbu Hanamaru gives good background on the living sword concept.

Promising first episode. It looked nice and wasn't like Touken Ranbu Hanamaru which felt more like a bishounen SoL with a little bit of action (I'm not saying it was a bad anime. I just didn't enjoy it).
I liked the fox mascot (there should be more foxes in anime) but not the boy who's obviously just there so that fans can ship him with the hot guy . But that's not a big problem for me, I can live with one annoying character.

I'm a little prejudiced because I've played the game, but this....was worth the wait.

This episode though did the one thing Hanamaru didn't do from the start; make it so casual fans could enjoy the series without having to learn everyone's history and keep track of who belonged to whom.

-I like the development that's going on with Hori.

-Kane-san was more the Kane-san of the game than the happy go lucky Kane-san in Hanamaru.

-For those that do play the game....I was not expecting several swords who showed up this episode until Hanamaru 2 in Janurary so that's a surprise.

-I don't even ship these two romantically, but I liked HoriKane's chemistry. The Fujis will love this show just for those two alone.

--I'm a little salty that my boy Kasen or the rest of the Dategumi aren't in it...but maybe in future eps.

Sure it's pretty, but I find the way the foreground (characters in particular) don't seem to "fit" the backgrounds to be distracting and a bit uncomfortable. I remember thinking the same thing when I watched a few episodes of God-Eater.

Already I do like this more than Hanamaru (which I dropped after a couple of episodes), but I'm not really into the premise, so it will probably end up being a "not for me" thing.

This was better than Hanamaru (which I didn't even make it through the first episode) but it has some of the same issues. If you haven't played the game, it's hard to follow anything other than "pretty boys with swords fighting". Though knowing Japanese history gave some context. I'll give this one another episode or two to see how interesting it gets.

It's pretty okay.

I'm not into action, and these characters aren't my favorites (except Yagen <3). I loved Hanamaru. I'd played the game before and found it sort of eh, but Hanamaru made me give it another chance. I love Kashuu Kiyomitsu, and he's not in this...

BUT

This... do you think they'll surprise us with swords that aren't in the cast list? I don't remember them saying Mikazuki will be in it... I hope there are more, though~ Because that looks like Yamanbagiri off to the side <3

... also their hair doesn't look shiny enough...

Episode 1

Woo, this is an animation fest of action and filled with nice digital effects.

Going in, it almost felt like a historical action film just by how the sound effects of rain and a rushing carriage blending together. Fight choreography is entertaining and character designs appear badass and historical.

Narratively, we got the simple layout of what is happening and what the purpose is. Very simple for now, which sets up for everything else in this episode.

Really looking forward to how this'll all play out. It's Ufotable after all, so I'm excited for them to go all in again!

Someone posted a cast list from the credits:

Don't really have anything to say about the Saniwa, but I liked Konnosuke! I'm glad they didn't make him sound too cartoony...and I like the fact that he's basically Siri.

Izumi is bae though. So is Hori.

It was pretty to look at and the action was ok. But, I guess I don't know enough about the source materials, the world, or the characters to say ep. 1 excited me. Only two of the designs really grabbed my attention and they were brief and at the very end.

I like Ufotable, but it will take time for this one to grab me if at all. I'll at least give it the 3 ep. try.
