Thanks ufo, that was a lot of death flags all over in the ...opening?

Also amused by the fact that they're using recollection as preview for the next episode. Almost went to click the preview button thanks to reflex as a saniwa.

This episode could have really fucked the series over by trying to start in media res with all the characters fighting at once like a lot of modern action shows, but thankfully while we do open on an action scene the episode dedicates itself to the relationship between the two main characters, keeping things small and personal which provides the proper context for us to get invested once shit starts to hit the fan. In fact, my only criticism of the episode is that it doesn't stick to that the whole way through. If we got more time with the two guys together and then ended right as the big action scene was about to begin, saving the battle and introductions of all the other characters for next episode then the pacing would have been perfect. Oh and the show looks fucking amazing too. This is the best ufotable has looked in years and the fact that their digital effects are much more subtle and restrained than their other stuff does wonders for the aesthetic.

Ah, imo this definitely improved compared to the other Touken (Hanamaru) series from Fall 2016.

The story still feels a bit messy imo but I'll invest time into it. I heard this was going to be a 12-13 episode show though.

Not really feeling this... outside of that god-tier OST. Holy smokes. That music and sound direction too. I watched this with headphones on and I just started... basically giggling... with delight. The story seems a bit silly though somehow and the visuals, while spectacular, don't feature quite as nice blending of the animation styles as some of Ufotable's other work. That OST made it hype af though so I need to keep watching this, lmao.

Beautifully animated and I loved the character interactions (Horikawa and Kane-san are my OTP sooooo) and of course the action was spectacular.

My only criticism is that from the first episode it doesn't seem to have a crazy, in-depth plot. The plot seems pretty basic and straightforward which may turn some people off to it. I have a feeling it's going to get real crazy real soon though and even if the main plot stays basic, we'll still see a ton of drama just through battle and character interactions.

I almost died when Tonbokiri appeared on screen because I was not expecting him at all and he is soooo hot.

The first episode has went way beyond my expectations and those were pretty dang high. I was a fan of Hanamaru, so I was excited to find another series, though separate and by a different studio, was going to be made. I must say the visuals were stunning and the animation itself remained movie quality through out the entire episode. Here's to hoping they can keep that up.

As far as an introductory episode goes, it was fantastic. (Can't be positive I am not being biased here.) It kept me engaged with the not only the characters, but the action too. I like how in this show, opposed to Hanamaru, we get to see more of how the swords are manifested and a bit more about certain swords struggles with having to let the past play out. While I didn't mind that the Saniwa never physically appeared in Hanamaru, it was actually kinda of nice to have a face to go along with the title here and Konnosuke was a great addition too.

I am very pleased my most anticipated show ended up being worth the wait and hopefully future episodes keep it that way. I am a bit concerned that some of my favorite swords won't make it in to this adaption, but at the same time I am hoping for more character development than what Hanamaru offered do to the cast being to large.

I very much look forward to episode two and hopefully seeing some new swords entering the picture. (I watched the first episode twice as I made a friend watch it with me too, though I think they liked Hanamaru (which I forced them to watch after) better because random singing episode.

Can't wait for Hanamaru 2! Especially since I see Katsugeki helping me get a better grasp on the characters.

I feel the same way about the Dategumi. I feel like I am getting my hopes up to high with thinking Shokudairkiri will make an appearance.

The janky animation of the cow-skeleton-things detracted from the show a bit, but overall the 3d animation isn't bad. Not sure if I'm interested enough to give it a 2nd episode or not.

OP song is great with the quality. Thanks ufotable.

I like how this series is taking a more serious approach at the story. I'm actually started to get invested into the storytelling now as the conflict involving the Time Retrograde Army is becoming a much bigger threat.

Episode 2

While they protected history, it wasn't exactly preserved the way it was supposed to be. So it's back to the citadel as their time is up, and there's another case where the Retrograde Army is going to appear. Just when things were going smoothly, all of the sudden the ship explodes. Pretty much, it's more drama here and lots of discussion about how to go about preserving history, and of course the technical aspects continue to be top notch. Should be interesting to see just what the heck happened.

Literally a carbon copy of another anime called Touken Ranbu - Hanamaru. Didn't like that other one too much (heard it was a game for girls anyways)and sure as heck don't care for this one either. Something just felt off to me and off-course this anime was previously a game as well. Oh well another swords and weapons etc. come to life anime / game rinse and repeat. As long as it sell's right?

They're both based on the same game. They decided to make two anime; one SoL and one which is more action-heavy.

Loving the show so far. Like the setting and the story. Haven't see Touken Ranbu nor played the game so that gives me a nice fresh look.

One note for the translator though (although i doubt he/she will read this). At one point when the male with the mustache on the floor says "gelieve te stoppen". This means "please stop" (in old dutch) but is completely missed in the subtitles. IF whoever wrote them sees this i hope they'd still be able to adjust it.

...

It's the same game. Two different anime based from it, that's all. Only this show is already 10x more dramatic than Hanamaru...which was more lighter anyway.

Only thing in common is that the MC is a Shisengumi sword(Hanamaru has Okita's, this series has Hijikata)
