Hey there everyone! So, I started writing a manga, and after what feels like forever, I got the first chapter out! I'm a total amateur, but I'm still super proud of what I've accomplished! Haha. So if anyone wants to check it out, I'll leave the link. It's something I hope to grow and improve upon to the point where I could turn this into a career! So please enjoy, and thanks for your time!

Oh yeah, I read this and then went to bed thinking I'll reply in the morning
That was 4 days ago

Anyway, is good
Somewhat tame (by anime standards) plot forming
Why are two random people able to go toe to toe with monsters (I'm guessing that comes later, but it irks me)
Love the cat, but I do generally love a good snarky character

I'm not going to read more, but that's me being a cheap ass not you being bad

I appreciate the notes and I will definitely take that into account as I continue. To address the monster fighting thing, that will be explained later, but I understand. My plan is to turn these people upside down and expand from there.

Thank you for taking the time to check it out! And thanks for the critique as well!

What are you looking for in terms of feedback and criticism?

EDIT: Also, how are you drawing this? Are you drawing it on paper and then scanning in to do the text and the screen tones? Or something else?

Just whatever you liked and what you think needs work would be perfect. I'm brand new to this, so I'm just interested in anything you might want to say.

For this chapter, I drew it on paper then scanned it in for tones/clean-up/text.

Okay, a few points about the art:

-First of all, your character art (proportions and whatnot) is good, and I really like when you do the anime faces. The cat is also probably my favorite thing artistically here.
-Contrast. You need more contrast. Look at all of your pages in that google docs sheet. Lots of gray. Don't be afraid to use black. Actually, just simply use more black. You can even simplify some things like hair by just making it black. Try to make things pop more. Also, I think scanning things in, tends to gray them up a bit. You might need to do some processing on your initial scans to make them more white. You can probably use image editing software to just delete everything but the black and replace it with a white background pretty easily.
-Backgrounds. Backgrounds are probably the weakest part of your art. There's not enough of them and when they are there, they usually aren't doing much. From the looks of it, seems like you can do it, but you need to put more effort into it. Think about establishing setting with your backgrounds. Your main character's house should tell the audience who they are. Instead, it tells me nothing.
-Your screentones. I don't like them. They are patterned so they scale really badly. On pretty much all of your pages, I get checkerboarding. If digital is going to be your primary distribution method, make sure that your screentones scale to different screen sizes and zoom levels. I would probably just use dots (also, try to use screentones that are all black. Yours use different shades of gray which I think would get rejected if it ever went to printing (but I'm not an expert on that)).

Thank you for the feedback!

I definitely agree with the backgrounds and the tones.

I realized that I need to simply be drawing more. I need to include backgrounds and leave them out where it would make sense, and when I was going through this chapter, it seemed like I had been doing the opposite. This also extends to shading and things. I would prefer to throw in some hatch lines over trying to make a screen tone look good as a shadow on its own.

The same exact day that I finished this chapter, I found out about the MediPaint thing that's working with Shonen Jump. It lets me draw the same as I would on paper, but it will be cleaner and the tones will be way better. At this point I am supplied with everything I would need to bring the quality of my work up to a higher level, the only thing I need to work on is me haha.

On the contrast, it's not something I noticed as much until you pointed it out. I will definitely try to have heavier contrast (and black, haha) going forward.

I really appreciate the feedback. Very thorough and insightful!

I spent a summer working as an intern were my jobbing was basically scanning old files into the system to be stored and this is 100% accurate. Try looking into the default color settings and dpi (dots per inch, basically resolution). The dpi probably won't help color, but may help scaling if you're going to keep scanning.

I'm going to try going digital and see how that turns out for Chapter 2. I'm feeling good about it so far, but we'll see. I'll try messing with my scanner settings next time I use it to see if I can take out the grey.

Google f***ed me over on this one
I tried to read this but Google doesn't understand what a stable server is so it kept crashing and sending me off my page before I was done reading it

But out of the four or five pages I read, it was very enjoyable
I don't really have feedback or anything seeing as I was five pages in but once I get more free time I'd love to sit down and read it

You and me both, kid. You and me both.

If you're having trouble with Google, try this link. The image quality is lower, but it's there haha.

Honestly, your artwork may not be up to par in a "professional standard" in the eyes of viewers but I think your doing incredibly great. In my opinion, your quite advance for a beginner. There isn't much you need to change in your artwork. Remember it's easier said than done. As you continue on what you're doing you'll grow and learn from your mistakes. You have to start small to become something great. Everyone's comic will be different and I truely believe they shouldn't be the same. Off topic but I hope in the future I wish to see more of your comic on social media such as Facebook, Tapastic, Webtoons, Smackjeeves etc. (wink wink, that means put it up on all those websites so I can read it for free)

I appreciate you checking it out! Thanks for the advice as well. I am considering a few options just personally on how to proceed in terms of sharing my work.Once I figure out my plan, I'll be sure to share all that stuff with you and everyone else here. Thank you again though, I really do appreciate it!
