In the 80s it was the arrival of the personal computer that changed everything:

In the 90s the arrival of the Internet (in the form of the world wide web) changed the world:

And in the 2000s it was the arrival of smartphones (which expanded into tablets, touchscreen panels, etc...) which revolutionized communication and technology...

What do you think will be the great technological revolution of the late 2010s (or more specifically the upcoming 2020s) that's going to change all life as we know it?

For example, computers existed for decades before the 80s - the internet and touchscreens were also around well before their time. But they didn't catch on until a specific moment within those decades.

What do you think exists now that you think will be a technological marvel that all modern humans in the coming decade will not be able to function without?

maybe 3d printers? those things are quite expensive and impractical today, but that could change in the future.
or maybe Augmented Reality (this is what many tech companies seem to think will be the future in tech)

One thing they all have in common is giving access to or letting you preserve information. Like books, radio and tv before them. Can't imagine what it would be. But I'd like it to be something that ends wars and saves lives.

So I'll take a guess and say androids. Yeah, yeah Matrix, Terminator, 2001. But if computers can do things better than people that will be the next step. Feeling lonely because you are butt ugly, get a robotic girlfriend or boyfriend. Need someone to look after the kids, robo-nanny. Need someone to make you a perfect cocktail, a robo-bartender. Possibilities are endless.

CRISPR and the rise of genetic engineering is probably what the 2010's will be remembered for in discoveries in years to come

As for what will be remembered for rising into main stream popularity in the 2010's is anyone's guess, though mine would be cheaper automation and renewable energy and Virtual Reality.

someone already said it but i want to double down on it

3D Printers can build a lot now. Guns cars etc soon they could be able to build electronics. and full homes. and if their price goes down it could change everything

also i want to add: AI. and not in a good way. jobs are so much easier for robots to take from entry level to even cubical offices. all done automatically now. More AI and robots = less jobs for humans, and with more and more people being born and our population booming, "They took our jobs" wont be meaning immigrants anymore.

Genetic engineering, I would think. And not just because I want to live long enough to see honest-to-god catgirls.

I'd like to add that 3D printing guns is illegal. Counts as black market weapons production. The weapons are not registered or serialized, and are completely untraceable.

I'd like to see some Deus Ex stuff going on. It's already happening now, but I'd like to see more money, more government support, poured into it so that we could eventually replace any organ. Aside from the brain. Which we may never entirely figure out.
