SUp ppl, Im In My Final Year of High School (Just Before University) and one of my subjects is art..
problem is my teacher is strict...
for my final portfolio pieces im not allowed to do any anime -BLAH- (its considered unacceptable)
but anywayz i still picked JAPAN as my central theme.

ive decided to do:
- Portrait of Some Random Jap Celeb
- Drawing of Someone with Hi-tech head phones (signify the technology of the country)

Wondering if u've got any other ideas on wat else i can do. Ive been thinking about doing a landscape painting of medieval buildings of Japan, but i really dont want to unless theres nothing else.

Anywayz POST UR IDEAS IF U CAN HELP ME
and u can also just talk about art in general if u want lol

dude, no personal threads. And why bother using someone else's idea?
isnt art all about getting inspiration and creating it all by yourself? Failed

thats y i added u can talk about art in general aswell...
and as for using some ones idea.. i meant give me topics of Japan so i can look it up and get some inspiration sheesh..
not like i gonna actually do what someone said in this thread completely...
besides we draw ideas and inspirations from everything we see, so nothing is every created all by yourself

I would think more deeply into the subject matter. Does your portfolio need a theme? If you're applying to a good school many of them have requirements. Don't be bummed about not being able to draw anime, even if animation/ illustration is your intented major. If you can't get composition down, they'll toss it aside. Character sketches aren't considered great works. Although, I do find it ridiculous that your teacher won't allow you to use weapons in her class, but what's stopping you from putting it in your portfolio? You can work on that piece at home, can't you?

Also, portrait sounds like a great idea, but of a celebrity? Idk about you, but someone did Johhny Depp (even if he is pretty and popular) and we absolutely tore them apart as far as subject matter goes. It's hard to go very deep with celebrity portraits unless you intend to make a comment on celebrity status in general or try something innovative (*like when Andy Warhol first did Marilyn Monroe)

^here's an example of someone who was able to incorporate their culture into their work without seeming too cliche.

^or if you wanted to work with a medium that is commonly associated with Japan, you can try that too! (don't try to make it look asian, I did that once. Big mistake. While it came out fantastic aestetically, the actual concept just seemed like I wanted to do something oriental.)

Remember, when working on a portfolio (after you look into your schools requirements) choose only the BEST works you have. Even if there is no central theme. It's better to have 10 great pieces than 10 great and 5 ok ones.

Please use any of these threads to discuss. There's pages about art-related stuff.
I'm sure you will find some ideas from those!
