TBF, the first is lampshaded and the second isn't a superpower in anime.

The problem is, I think this anime is trying to make fun of like Konosuba, SAO, Re:Zero etc but at the same time, it's failing to be funny. It's like watching someone tell a joke that only they think is funny. It's not so bad it's good, it's just bland. It's the "Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side." of anime.

It's a subtle, meta humor. E.g., how the "steal" spell was handled.

I can totally understand someone not liking it. I may even prefer the Konosuba level of parody myself (we'll see where this show goes.) But there's a quiet cleverness here that I appreciate.

Episode 2:

While I don't mind Touya having the use of magic to the extent he does, I kinda wish they had the path of him not having any and having to figure out ways for him to us his smartphone to get by in this new world imstead. God's a good bro apparently.

For some reason, this episode reminded me a lot of Kyo Kara Maoh execpt with a gaggle of girls falling for and praising thr MC instead of a bunch of guys.

For a show where the central premise is taking his smartphone into a new world, so far he's made icecream, used the map and taken a photo of a sleeping girl. Hardly seems worth bringing it.

The exposition is horrible. This episode had our MC literally reading a book of magic spells out loud so he could conveniently find uses for them later on. It's not the using of the spells that's bad, it's the lazy way he learns them.

Overall the whole thing seems really flat. The action sequences are panned shots of still images, and for a harem, the girls lack personality.

I'm pretty sure the main character didn't know how to read last episode. And surely those two girls weren't just hauling a useless null magic book around for the fun of it..? Maybe we missed a fairly significant time lapse between episodes 1 and 2. Even so, my general impression of this anime so far is that it's pretty pathetic. It's not just that the MC is OP, but the story is literally guiding his actions to produce nothing but the most perfect of outcomes.

Shout-out to xxJing for hitting the nail on the head regarding everything he's said about this episode.

A couple other people have said this already, but I love how the one gimmick this show has (him having his cellphone) is not getting any attention whatsoever. It's like if a hero started on an adventure to defeat the demon king and then he just stops in the second town and becomes a blacksmith or something (this isn't a very good analogy, but I thought it was funny so there you go). I think it should have been like Konosuba and he should've took God with him lol that would actually be interesting if his sidekick was the OP one and an old guy.

Anyways, yeah. This show is extremely generic. As much as I'm complaining though, I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit. I guess I'm just a generic kind of guy.

I can't do it. I tried. I wanted to give the show a chance. I actually really enjoy the twin's banter. And the concept is appealing. (I liked the bit in Ep1 where he used the search on his phone to teach them to make ice cream.) But the execution is awful. Just.... boring. I gagged when the Duke bowed to the MC. (Really!?) Then the whole cure blindness thing and I just had to stop. IF there is a villain in this anime with sufficient power to actually rival the MC they'd have crushed this world long ago and be ruling it unopposed.

First ep. was kinda fun. Second blech. If it doesn't improve in the next one or two I'm dropping it.

I enjoyed today's episode even more than last week's. The show almost seems made for me.

Ha! I thought that show was fairly terrible. It's my lowest-ranked Tenchi franchise entry. I started it in 2009 and didn't finish it until 2015.

I actually didn't like it as much as the other tenchis either (GXP was actually my favorite) but what it did do was it went full throttle with everything, Fighting, Fanservice, Wish fulfillment, it didn't skimp on anything.

This show on the other hand feels to me like, well, if you would say that Re:Zero took the genre and turned up the Drama and Violence to 10, and Konosuba took the genre and turned up the comedy and flashiness to 10, where as Overlord and LH took the genre and turned up the world building and economical discussion up to 10; then Smartphone basically said, let's incorporate all those things, but dim them down to an unobtrusive 4. Like if the animation company just got together and said, "We are going to make the most mediocre transported to a fantasy realm anime ever!"

Yeah, GXP was pretty great Regarding the wish fulfillment, my problem with harems has always been that if the girls all actually want the guy, then they're a recipe for mass-unhappiness, and INSM/Geminar really went full-out in that direction. (I also found the political stuff boring compared to say Gundam, and couldn't really get invested in the battles for whatever reason. At least I did like the harem girls.) IMO SAO really nails the wish-fulfillment by having Kirito choose and "marry" one girl. If Smartphone has the girls all seriously want Jesus-kun, I'll like it less.

I know what you mean, I just described Smartphone as "Fisher-Price nice" on MAL earlier today. I laughed at Jesus-kun healing the blind woman today - really? But I like that. I like that that's what this show is doing. But I totally understand that that would have negative appeal to many people.

I feel toward Smartphone's hilariously OP MC a bit like I did toward Clannad After Story's final episode, which is one of my favorite episodes ever - "You're not allowed to do that! People won't accept that! But I love that you just did it anyway."

I can forgive Clannad because of Air. Air took the other path, and Air was depressing as fuck. Like if you want to make someone contemplate suicide, show them Air.

Yeah..I'll watch a little bit longer for Yae because she's super cute, but the MC is a bit...much.
