skylylac I'm holding out a bit longer before waiting for fan subs personally, my guess is negotiations are taking longer than planed (wanna say last season was 3 weeks in before they announced it if I remember correctly) biggest issue is as I said before licensing for lyrics if you noticed most shows even idol anime don't have translated subs for the lyrics however the lyrics are actually story relevant in symphogear meaning CR has to negotiate not only with the anime studio but also the music production company.

Symphogear was the big show I wanted to see this season and I'm impatient.

If/when CR gets it, I'll most likely re-watch AXZ anyways. I've already been re-watching the first 3 seasons to bring me back up to speed for it anyways.

Music licensing in Japan is not just costly but also a pain cause the amount of parties involved, that's one of the main reasons we don't see much Japanese music been offered through apple store,

I read that too in other SYM forums but CR still had S3

That being said Anoyoimus Noise had a lot of songs / Akiraba Strip / Love Live etc why is this so much more difficult ?

I cant believe S4 is going to be an Orphan too ? ( Like S2) S1 Funimation had

I haven't watched Symphogear but from what I've heard the lyrics to the songs are very plot relevant right? That means they need to sub them which requires extra rights. In most music shows (like the ones you listed) this isn't the case and they sometimes put karaoke but rarely have the songs translated. From my understanding you'd be missing plot elements if they did that with Symphogear.

It's more that they serve as additional character development rather than containing plot elements.

Probably the same reason as to why is tough to buy Japanese digital media downloads, its probably a case by case scenario but that would be a good topic for answerman to cover..

"The biggest obstacle is that the Japanese media business is run by powerful, sometimes unbelievably aggressive and controlling talent agencies. These guys really throw their weight around, and the most successful ones consider their talent to be a HUGE DEAL, inside or outside of Japan. They're used to dictating everything related to their talent, even down to what photos magazines can use. And in order for many of their biggest artists to be made available in, say, North America, they don't want to just casually put some songs online for everyone to see. No, there has to be a BIG SPLASH, with coverage on EVERY TELEVISION NETWORK and EVERY MAJOR MAGAZINE. They are, after all, big stars."

"If there's one place where Japanese and American media are completely divergent, it's music. Japan's music industry is a bizarre, frustrating collection of old-school publishers, talent agencies, yakuza, talent agencies that act like yakuza, and all sorts of other characters that often don't play nice with each other, let alone foreign companies. They move slowly, don't adapt to internet culture well (or at all), and attach themselves onto inane rules that seem to have no basis in reality, and won't bend for anyone. It's one of many reasons why so few Japanese musical acts have ever hit outside of Asia."

All this about the music rights being the reason is SPECULATION. There is way too much speculation. Yes music rights and music producers are expensive/complicated; but all anime has music involved and Symphogear doesn't even have that many more songs in it. Don't speculate on a cause without firm, and confirmed statement from a publisher that this was the reason.

The key difference is that in other anime, the songs usually go untranslated. In previous Symphogear series on CR all of the battle songs have been subtitled, and I expect CR intends to continue that. That would go a long way to explaining why every Symphogear series so far has hit CR late.

doesn't bother me a whole lot. had to watch the first 2 seasons through dubious methods anyway. CR getting seasons 1-3 was a shock to me as it was.

No, it's not just speculation. It's pretty well accepted. Also, word from Crunchyroll staff confirms this.

Creating a translation of a song text requires additional music licensing. Unless specifically provided or allowed by the publisher, we cannot subtitle songs due to the prohibitive cost of music licensing.

And with a show as music-heavy as Symphogear, and where the lyrics are quite literally the characters talking form their own points of view, going without lyrics would be stupid. But getting the rights straightened out will likely take longer.
Plus, I imagine that not only would the script subtitles need to be approved for each episode but the song lyrics as well.

Small correction, CR has translated most of the songs. There's about a handful instances where either the first (Ex. TRUST HEART) or second/third (Ex. -Ignited- Beyond the Blade) time a song is sung it's not subbed, or in the case of Massacre Harp, not at all.

it's more than just speculation and "but all anime have music involved" is besides the point since almost every music heavy anime does NOT include subtitles of the music and adding music subs are an entirely different issue
