Having a waifu/husbando isn't about them loving you, on the contrary it's about you loving her/him and striving to be a person he/she could love.

Huh... I just used it as a way to label my favorite characters, but that is an interesting concept that raises some interesting questions. Say I'm male, which I am, and my waifu is a lesbian. NTR?

What if I really like a character but she is a psycho and I wouldn't really want her to love me but I admire the character nonetheless?

I've got soooo many questions now. xD

Anyway, for me waifus and husbandos comprise a mental harem of my favorite characters who, for whatever reason, come to my mind often and help me smile or think about life positively. I'm not talking about fantasizing about what said character would do if they were present, just like...

So let's take my namesake as an example:

Asuka is a bad ass and she doesn't give up easily, so she inspires me to be a bad ass and not give up easily. Likewise I don't want to isolate myself like she does so I try to learn from her mistakes and rely on and open up to others when I need to.

Hopefully I don't sound mental. xD
