Over the pasts months I've been occasionally making Onigiri at home as there is no where to buy them premade near where I live. The first 5 times or so I used some triangle molds I got off the internet. They ended up being dense and packed too tight. So even more recently I have been practicing making those heavenly rice triangles by hand. Is anyoen else on this quest to make perfect p*kemon donuts? Please share! Post pics of your rice balls if you want.

Here are some I made a few weeks back to share with co-workers at lunch time. Filled with teriyaki salmon.

I think I tried once, and it sucked. I personally don't see the appeal of them, there is just too much rice and I'd rather just make a rice dish.

If you get good at making them they can be a lot heavier on filling than rice. But preference is just that. The appeal however is similar to a sandwich, you can prepare them and store them easily to eat later. You don't need utensils or plates or anything.

I have done freehand and use mold. Molding is better since it control the size and amount of rice.

I've never tried it or tried making it. Is there a particular rice used? Seems like the filipino dish I have back home called Siopao, but instead of using rice it's made of sweet dough.

Sorry, couldn't resist-- this is an "oni girl."

An "onigiri" (お握り) is a hand-molded (at least traditionally-- I'd assume the ones sold in convenience stores and such are machine-made) rice ball, as depicted in OP''s post, made with the usual short grain white rice, typically triangular, and can have various topping or fillings. A portable meal, like a sandwich.

Oni Girl is also acceptable and appreciated.

Personally I prefer this de-horned variety.

She's so sassy and cool

But none of mace-to-your-vital organs-blood-in-mouth-while-dying aftertaste.

She will cut you though >.>

それは鬼切り(おにぎり)だよね!

That would be an "onigiri" (鬼切り,"oni cutting")! Eh? Eh? (Ba-dum-Bump!)
