quality assurance and debugging ? like Assassin Creed unity ??

@dulun18

there are games out there that will allow cheat codes for offline gaming even today even without gameshark -- like uncharted and god of war games

Cheat codes were originally meant to be a method of debugging and testing during development. So they've probably disappeared from video games because of a change in software development methodology or an improvement in SDK tools.

Here's a documentary about the death of cheat codes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZDKAM-x48Y&t=0s
It's 20 minutes long, so I'm watching it after posting.

As for Action Replays and Gamesharks, those have likely died down because consoles are getting tougher and tougher to hack. With the advent of competitive online gaming, console manufacturers are putting more resources into locking their systems tightly shut to protect the sanctity of online gaming. So the next best thing for single player "cheating" would be mods, which is even better because now anyone can make their own cheats!

PS2 GTA games are the only games i've used cheats. Not much but enough to make either something easier or to accomplish something. The ones i've done it are: III (on certain occasions and reasons), Vice City (not much) and San Andreas (very rarely).

Another ones are MGS2 and MGR:Revengeace. In MGS2 VR missions, put the first letters of Konami code as your name when creating a profile and: all missions unlocked. Surely everybody knows it now but those who don't...

For Revengeance, do Konami code on title screen and Revengeance difficulty is unlocked, providing that you haven't cleared the game once.

Edit: OK, i wasn't entirely honest. I have used Action Replay for DS on some DS games. To achieve something faster, make something easier and so on are the reasons. But that's all in the past.

i do miss cheats, but how ever most games are so easy now that cheats arent required, and even games with cheats in them like gta 5, will disable trophies/achievements.

I guess cheat codes are so ps2? I prefer playing a game without cheat codes to be honest with you, because every time I used them they broke the game play. I rather enjoy walk throughs myself, I'm trapped in a certain point, pull that up and I'm ready to go again. Drake puzzle quests can be hard. and once upon a time someone hacked ps network and it caused a chaos moment that brought about total mayhem. now, anyone who hacks ps/network and they find out about it, you're no longer going to be able to game.

I'd say it's because modern games have become easier on average than older games. Sure, we have Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Kingdom Hearts with its goddamn critical mode, but that's nothing compared to old games like Zelda II or Ninja Gaiden.

console gaming became more online focus starting with the PS3 so i guess that's why they got rid of gameshark.

despite having to official cheats/hack program now a day, a lot of games are flooded with hackers/glitches online to the point that the developer/publisher of the games don't really bother with it anymore

custom firmware ? gaming is pretty competitive and there will always be those who want an unfair advantage.

This is why when you are playing against each other in a tournament all the players must be in the same room/building -- easy to keep an eye on them. Also, i heard developer created ways to detect cheating in games as well over the years. The thing is you have to buy the latest games because they will not bother with the maintenance or updates of older games thus leaving them filled with hackers/glitchers

Ahh cheat codes, loved them in Mercenaries 2. Getting all the vehicles and best guns made the game much more fun tbh. (fuel air rockets will never be missed on there) Well does Skyrim mods count as cheat codes? If so, there's a modern cheat code right there.

The latest Grand Theft Auto game AKA Grand Theft Auto V came with cheat codes just like the good old days and I been using codes like lowering the warrant stars, infinite ammo, and other cool stuff.
Thank you Rockstars!
