I wrote my review on Mayoiga a little while ago talking about how I only managed to watch the entire anime because I enjoyed laughing at how bad it really was... This was my first anime I watched that was so bad that I enjoyed laughing at it and unlike other series I found really bad, I managed to watch it all the way through...

So I was wondering, what differentiates a bad anime that's just plain trash, and a bad anime that is so bad, that you can find enjoyment in laughing at how bad it is. How can something be so goddamn bad that I enjoyed laughing at it? I'm gonna compare 2 anime's that I hated, one I was able to watch until the end cause of how bad it was (Mayoiga) and one that I dropped because I was unable to find enjoyment (Sword Art Online.) Keep in mind these are my opinions and i'm not saying they're trash anime's however I simply did not enjoy them and found them to be "bad" anime's.

Sword Art Online was an anime I heard got allot of mixed reviews, some people absolutely loved it while some despised it and found it to be "One of the most over hyped anime's." I started out thinking it was pretty decent, but as it went on it started to get really repetitive and cheesy, I enjoyed the Aincrad arc as the fight season were pretty decent however the ending was really dumb in my opinion. The Fairy Dance arc was pretty dumb and just plain boring however I managed to get through it in hopes it would get better, however when the Phantom Bullet arc came around I could no longer find any enjoyment. The anime just felt cheesy and really repetitive. It felt like they were trying to hard to make everything "edgy and dull." none of the characters even felt human and the most likable character Asuna, as she had a personality at the beginning of Aincrad, (however they even ruined that) was just thrown aside and became one of the most dull side character's i've ever seen...

When I watched Mayoiga I was astonished that they even thought this would come anywhere close to "horror." Nothing about this anime was even remotely scary except for the terrible writing, Just like in Sword Art Online the characters all felt really dull but it didn't feel like the writers were even attempting to give them a personality... They didn't try to force an "Edgy and Depressing" factor onto the characters in fact, it felt like they gave them no personality at all.

I think the reason I can watch Mayoiga ironically but not SAO is because of how bad the horror is... These character's are suppose to be facing their "Horrifying past traumia's" but not a single one is actually scary and is just plain funny how they get scared by it... SAO try's to take everything super serious and in doing so create a boring and redundant show that's been done hundreds of times... There's no redeeming factor in SAO for me.. It's just straight up boring. Mayoiga however at least has it's laughable horror to keep you somewhat interested. It's just plain funny to see how these character find the stuff they face horrifying and how they all manage to have 0 emotions.

Once again i'm not saying either of these anime's are bad, that's a personal opinion and if you like Mayoiga or SAO that's fine. However this is how I view the anime's I don't like and how I decide whether to continue watching them for laughs or just to drop them out of boredom... Feel free to comment your opinions on "So bad they're good anime's" and if you have some of your own "So bad they're good anime's" comment them and tell me as i'd like to find some more of these anime's to figure out why they're watchable compared to other bad anime's.

I think the epitome of "so bad it's good" anime would be Garzey's Wing...a 3 OVA show that really sucks...but at the same time, is fantastic. The dialogue is cheesy, the animation rather bland, and the plot makes no sense...and viewed in dub, it comes across as an amazing parody-esque series

I would agree that humor is a pretty big part of the appeal of a "so bad it's good" anime. In fact, I wonder if perhaps it might be it's own unique brand of humor that's hard to get elsewhere (except, perhaps, from certain parodies).

However, with Mayoiga in particular, one interesting possibility I would like to bring up is the theory that the show was actually created that way intentionally. In other words, I've heard it argued that Mayoiga is more of a comedy than a horror. This is all just semantics really, as it doesn't change what the show is or how it's perceived. Even so, if it was intentionally made "bad" in order to be funny, and actually pulled off that goal, would it then be considered... good? It's an interesting thought, anyway. I personally subscribe to that theory, and thus (if pressed) might argue for Mayoiga being a normal "good" show rather than "so bad it's good". Kind of like a parody.. But as I admitted - this is all just semantic nit-picking and isn't really important.

That's just a theory, but whatever the truth is, I agree that Mayoiga was hilarious!

As for me, Mahou Shoujo? Naria Girls stands out as a show I would call "so bad it's good" ~ but with an added level of meta-craziness. It's crazy because I feel like Naria Girls is trying to be "so bad it's good", yet failing. But it's failing so bad that it's hilariously good. How's that for insanity! I'm still debating whether or not that even makes sense, but if it doesn't, then you could simply drop it a level and say that it's "so bad it's good" in the normal sense.

Anyway, I adored that show for similar reasons. The characters, conversations, and contrivances had me laughing like crazy. In all aspects, it felt like amateur hour - but by amateurs who were just messing around and not even trying to be serious. It's almost more like a humorous YouTube video than an actual anime, and I don't think that's far off from the level of quality or effort put in (or length of the show, for that matter). I'm still not sure if I'm laughing with the show or laughing at the show, but either way, I'm laughing.

I seemed to be one of a very small minority of people who were laughing though, which to me lends further credence to the idea that the show is "so bad it's good".

Definitely would not recommend it though.

Seriously, no one watch this. Sure, it had my sides splitting, but chances are high a normal person will just hate it and never get that time back.

I don't usually post to forums, but as soon as I saw the topic, one came screaming into my brain: Asura Cryin'. It has:

1. MC with the most annoying hair I've seen in an anime. It isn't even normal anime silly. It's just annoying.

2. His best friend is a ghost who follows him to school. For some reason, the other students and faculty are cool with that!

3. His finds a giant robot in a suitcase that is powered by his friend's ghost.

4. He gets taken advantage of by a demon girl and they have a Daughter who is a giant bird for some reason.

It was as if someone locked themselves in a room for a week while surviving on coffee and cocaine and decided to write an anime on the last day. Yet, somehow, I couldn't stop watching it. I'm not proud of it, but damn, I watched the hell out of it.

OP, sounds like you dropped SAO before reaching Mother's Rosario (the final arc in season 2). The series as a whole is mediocre at best, but that arc is really good, especially if you liked how Asuna was in the beginning and hated how she faded into the background over time.

Anyways, I don't know if I would call it "bad" but Another sure did a good job keeping me entertained. It started out as a creepy and mysterious horror story and quickly went for the most absurd deaths you could think of. It's as if the writer had a checklist for stupid and unusual deaths. They just kept getting crazier every episode. Then they really went all out in the finale. For example:

Coincidentally, the same director later worked on Mayoiga.

The Phantasy Star Online anime is the one I always suggest when someone asks this. It is absolutely absurd in how it praises the game as being somehow a life altering, world changing experience and it's made even more so by just how serious the show is about that message. Beyond that, it's a fairly bog standard alternate/virtual world action series / school life series that is so stupidly obvious it kind of hurts.

It's definitely not worth watching if you're actually looking for something good (or even mediocre) but if you're looking for a laugh/groan fest, it may fit the bill.

Ironically I felt that Oreimo was super trash but it transcended into my secret interest and when Eromanga came.... OOOOOH BOY ! That trash transcended all because it never hid from it at all ! But I thoroughly enjoyed both because of there trashiness

Yeah that's what I was thinking of. You absolutely have to watch it in dubbed, or it's just plain bad though.

I think this is hard to pull off in anime. There's a bunch of bad movies I love.but I can't think of any anime. When they're bad they just stay bad.

Maybe guilty pleasure shows like Keijo, but they know what they're doing and it's not the same.
