Me and a companion were recently discussing Social Darwinism, and now I ask you.

What are your thoughts on Social Darwinism?

Fine, 21st Century...

My thoughts on Social Darwinism are as such. I believe that is is dangerous. It can be exploited, to exploit. However, it can also drive great things forward, such as the economy of America during the Gilded Age. But at the same time, the Gilded Age was known for its great pushes in growth, as well as corruption, exploitation, human rights abuses, child labor, and the like.

Will Durant, historian and pulitzer prize winner, said, "Competition is not only the life of trade, it is the trade of life -peaceful when food abounds, violent when the mouths outrun the food.

Somewhat of an open-ended question right there.

You should start a discussion by stating your opinion

My thoughts are that this thread has a high risk of turning into a dumpster fire. >.>

When I think of Darwinism I'm reminded of people spouting the meme "survival of the fittest" with only the surface, pop idea of Darwin's work.

It's the result of people being people. We do it both consciously and subconsciously. The term has a bad rap. It's one of those things that folks do all the time without realizing, yet, frankly, many don't want to admit it when they hear the phrase. That knee-jerk reaction, yo.

FYI, even though it's a meme it's actually most adaptable. Just for knowledge sake.

There are different types of Social Darwinism. This subject is really broad in itself.

A situation of Social Darwinism is when a person who rises to the top in society are considered automatically "superior".

I didn't think of that type. I just went with does Natural Selection still affects us.

Well, we can't really do anything about it. People will always be able to make themselves more powerful through education and social connections. That power can be exploited by both good and evil.

Even if the "survival of the fittest" concept is rejected and no one needs to fight for survival, it's only because some people are using their power to accomplish that by providing for others, which can change at any moment.

It's sort of the root justification for everything awful we did to each other over the last century or so and, to be honest, still a thread that runs through some elements of social Conservatism. It has a lot of different definitions and little consensus on all of its tenets though.

But yeah, the TL;DR of it is basically superior people will achieve a superior place in society while conversely keeping inferior people around is a detriment to society. In other words people such as you and I would be considered inferior and depending on how far said proponent wants to go, we should be purged or rendered sterile for the good of society. While people who are rich, for example, would be considered superior by virtue of simply having wealth.

It's been used to justify all sorts of terrible shit over the years. Racism, imperialism, exploiting the poor, ignoring the sick, so on and so forth. Fortunately, its been largely discredited and debunked. Not that it stops some people from continuing to push it mind you.

hmmm....I agree with it to an extent, such as if I lived in another time I probably wouldn't survive- minus the fact if I didn't have my surgey to stop me from throwing up when I was 1 I would have starved to death lol-
so in the sense ofsurvival of the fittest, yea, we wouldn't survive, however , that's why there are communities
doesntmean we should be purged, just see it in the sense of taking care of eachother on a tribal level, bt we cant really contribute, itake that back, we can, when it comes to raising young with knowledge and skills, just not labor

Well, that's kind of the rub of why social Darwinism ( as well as the whole survival of the fittest idea ) didn't pan out. Humans are an extremely social / communal species and its that ability to function together that got us this far. Not everyone punching each other for the privilege of sticking their dick in stuff and getting to eat the biggest steak first.

We'd die off in fairly short order if we tried to act like a pride of lions or some such alpha male BS.
