I see space colonies in science-fiction a lot and I was just wondering if it's possible or not. Maybe somewhere in the distant future, is there a possibility? Also, you got to wonder is mankind ready for such a thing.

What do you think? Is it possible or not?

Maybe in 1000 years.
It would take trillions of dollars to make a project like that possible

Exactly. Where you gonna find trillions of dollars lying around to use for such a project?

Well, what I mean is space colonies on a planet or something not like in outer space floating around. It's kind of still too earlier for space travel yet the same can be said for making space colonies.

we could have built a base on the moon in the 80s, we had the tech back then to do it including creating air from the moon stones.

To me it would take something like Star Trek technology to make it happen. Need ships to travel in hyperspace, ships today would be like Noah's Ark, many generations would come and go before getting to a planet that could be lived on.

I think if we do get up there eventually it's going to be because of big corporations who are looking for profit. The only reason they discovered America was because of economic reasons

Definitely
Now, how far in the future, how successful, etc. are completely different question

I'm putting 30 +/- 10 years given current funding and level of technology
Another 30 +/- years to refine the process and/or upgrade to something people would actually want to live in for reason beyond "Holy shit, I'm living on fucking Mars (functional economy, cities, etc.)

But it's definitely doable.

I get the strangest feeling that it won't happen in my lifetime. Space colonies and all that good stuff won't probably happen until long after I'm dead.
