I was strongly considering buying a condo when I was house-shopping. Being able to do my yard and garden my way won out.

Condos are nice in some cases. If you want to live and work in a bigger city it's a good option. I always wanted land so I know the the house route is the only one for me.

Owning a home is better than owning a condo, or renting an apartment.

This is why people should stop by the local police station and pull up records on the house they will be buying.. it's free.. just state that you are a potential buyer who would like the record of the house in question..

meth house, deaths, hoarders, drugs, etc...

I'd prefer a home but it all depends.

Whatever you pick, rent. Real estate used to only go up in value but that is no longer the case. It is a risky investment, not much different than the stock market. If you are young and your life is still unfolding, you might stumble upon career opportunites in other cities, states or countries and want to move. Homes take a while to sell, and if you are underwater on your mortgage because of a downturn in the economy, you may be trapped for a decade or more. Yes, you can rent out the house or condo, but that is its own can of worms. A bad tenant may not pay rent for 6 months before you can evict them. They also might trash your home, with damages far exceeding the security deposit. Maybe you won't be able to charge enough rent to pay the mortgage and taxes. I am close to retirement and real estate agents are screaming at me 24/7 to build a home in their community. Not going to do it. Going to rent a sea side condo for a year just so I can live in a place with a view for a year of my life, then rent a home in a retirement community with low expenses. Then if I get pissed at my neighbors with the barking dog or need to move to assisted living, it's not a big deal.

I work at a condo managing company and I truly believe they are beautiful and well taken care of, but nothing is truly yours and you have to live by the condominiums rules at all times. Also, they are crazy expensive and far away from the city.

I believe that sort of sharing is under the category of "by necessity and not by choice"
