Gundam Seed/Destiny is what got me into the mecha genre. I know everyone and their mother hates on it, but I have no ill will towards it. It's not one of my favorites nowadays, but I still enjoy it despite some questionable decisions in the sequel. Mecha is probably my favorite type of anime to watch because of it.

I SO AGREE WITH YOU!!!

Gundam made me mech curious that's for sure, as a vampire fan well just about anything there, but the original hellsing was what got me curious. I'm lacking in watching comedy, but surrendered all that when I found Gintama, and I rather fell in love with westerns/action with Cowboy Bebop and Trigun and then with fantasy with Wolf's Rain.

-Love live dragged me into idol hell and now I can't get back out (though there are definitely a few idol shows that I'm not fond of).
-Gundam 00 probably made me fall in love with the mecha genre (I think the first model kit that I got was from the series).
-My Hero Academia made me realise that I love hero anime even though I don't like western hero shows that much.
-Haikyuu made me love sports anime (and it's still my favourite manga to this day).

Hunter X Hunter (1999) - The reason that I still watch anime today. During a 12-14 year stretch, anime had become an afterthought for me. At the time, gaming and other activities made up the bulk of my hobbies. Despite that, I watched and re-watched Hunter X Hunter through that period. I most likely would have abandoned anime a long time ago if not for this series. Of course, I was extremely ecstatic when the 2011 reboot continued Gon and Killua's adventures.

Non Non Biyori Repeat - The reason I got into the Slice of Life genre. Prior to watching this show, I would gravitated towards action or battle series. It was my first Slice of Life show. Usually, after watching an episode of action or battle series, I would be brimming with energy and enthusiasm (felt like I would embark on my own adventure). In contrast, Non Non Biyori Repeat left me relaxed and calm. It was an odd sensation to get from the anime, but I loved it. Since then, Slice of Life has become my most favored genre. I say "Non Non Biyori Repeat" as oppose to "Non Non Biyori" since I watched the second season first.

Monogatari Series - The reason I looked up voice actors. Before, I never payed attention to the voice actors. After hearing the dialogue in Monogatari, I had an overwhelming urge to look up their identities. Now the voices of Sawashiro, Hayami, Horie, Hanazawa, Kamiya, Chiwa, Shinichiro, and many others have become instantly recognizable companions.

Slam Dunk - My first sports anime. The reason that I adore sports anime and started joining sports clubs as a kid.

i have seen horror anime in the past (Ghost Hunt and Hell Girl) and liked them but figured it was dumb luck since I tend to gravitate towards romance anime. I then tried Shiki and I decided that yeah......I need to watch more horror anime. I loved it.

Descendants of Darkness/Yami no Matsuei got me into the boys love genre. I consider it light shounen-ai.

A mix of Sailor Moon, Wedding Peach, and Pretear made me love magical girl anime. I watched them all in a certain timeframe to each other.

Girls Bravo made me realize that ecchi comedies/harems can be hilarious too.

Nisekoi got me into RomComs.

Usagi Drop got me into more normal Slice of Life (and parent/child anime/manga which is probably my favorite "genre").

I was already into everything else pretty much.

Golden Time - I never actually watched a rom/com before. But I tried this one on a whim and enjoyed it.

Yowapeda - My first sports anime and I really got into it.I then branched off to watch other sports anime.

Oddly enough a Gundam show didn't get me into Gundam. It was Gundam Dynasty Warriors video games that sparked my interest in the series.

For me it would be:

Gundam Wing for mecha (and my first anime in general).

Hellsing Ultimate for over the top, gory action shows. I know that's a very specific "genre", but I tend to really like those types of shows.

Spice and Wolf for romance. I tried it after realizing that I always felt really invested in romance subplots in other genres. Haven't looked back since.

Actually, right now Tsuredure Children is making me see the potential of short anime. I completely overlooked them before, but now I'm thinking of trying more.
