So I've always watched anime online and when it comes to mature content I look for the uncensored version of course. Now that im a premium plus member on crunchy roll I expected uncensored anime. The one question im wondering, is all of crunchy rolls library censored?
P.s. if so I might think about going back to free streaming.

Some of the shows they simulcast are censored, because the files they're provided with come from censored broadcasts.

being a premium member only means you are able to watch a small selection of anime broadcast for free in Japan without ads, and they're usually censored (due to laws and regulations for free tv broadcast in japan)

uncensored version, if there is one, usually comes from paid broadcast channels / blurays...which means the only way to watch the superior version is either by buying the actual bds or through "other" means.

Short answer:

Shows that were originally acquired as simulcasts are almost always censored.

Shows that are acquired as library titles are rarely censored. (I can think of only one that is).

"Uncensored" versions are almost always a privilege of those who pay $20/month for a Pay-TV station's subscription plan, or those who bought the disc release of the title in Japan/overseas. Regular consumers, this also includes domestic and overseas streaming, receive a version that has visual changes to some scenes (per se this cannot be called censorship, as censorship can only be done by the authorities, which is not the case - there is no involvement of these on any level). It's basically a sales argument, based on exclusivity, enticing customers to subscribe to a certain Pay-TV channel in Japan, or to buy the discs. Publishers and TV stations also want to avoid negative backlash from offended consumers to the television watchdog organisation, which is bad publicity for their shows.
The exclusivity of the station covers the duration of the first run of the series on TV, and is gradually transferred to the disc publisher as the discs come out. A streaming site - be it domestic or overseas - having the unchanged content during the initial TV run, as well as the subsequent sales period of the disc, e.g. until shortly after the release of the latest volume on Japan, will not be tolerated.

For a streaming site to receive the unchanged material, they need a specific permission by the licensor of the content, which means either a local disc publisher or the licensor in Japan. Unless that permission is given, no legal streaming site will be able to offer said unchanged material.
