Dark Magic already exists. Just look at the US political system.

I'm surprised how many people think it wouldn't make any difference. That would only be the case if magic were severely limited in scope. If it is reasonably powerful and covers all the areas one would expect, it would revolutionize the world. Incurable diseases? Not with magic. Relatively short lifespan? Magic. Transportation issues? Not with magical gates or teleportation. Can't grow enough food to feed the hungry? Magic. Can't build star ships, space elevators, or other cool things because of the limitations of physics or materials? MAGIC!

Yes, magic would be used for military purposes and some things like lengthening lifespans might be restricted to the super rich, but magic would open up a ton of new jobs and possibilities in science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, and education. Depending on how it worked, the crafting of magical items might become serious business too that would require a lot of laborers and help offset the coming problems with increased automation.

Even if magic couldn't solve every problem completely--or even most of them--it would be a huge deal.

I think most people wouldn't think magic would make a huge deal because they understand that the world's problems have to do with human nature. It may be better or it may be worse, but the problems would stay the same. Also, typically in a world of magic, you see haves and have nots, and depending on what sort of magic the person has, it may be more valuable or not.

It would depend on the kinds of magic. Like with technology and free trade, magic would benefit the people who have exclusive access to it but not to the enemy or competitors of those people. I would certainly not like the idea that magic could create monsters to steal jobs from humans. Zetsuen No Tempest, Accel World, Full Metal Alchemist, and Fairy Tail are some of the anime that discuss this issue with magic. I already wrote two fiction stories in the Crunchyroll forum, Fall of Utopia Fantasy and War in Cyberspace 2016, that discuss this issue as well.

Very true. I like the magic in FMA probably the best, and think it might have the best chance of having a positive impact on the world.... Depending on the price..........

Which is what I was going to bring up. Magic never exists without a price to pay. What would be the price you pay for magic to exist in the world?

On the other hand, metaphysically, depending on the magic existing would be interesting and pose another question as to death, the afterlife, god, and more...

Without going into specifics, all I can assume is that we'd be trading out whatever problems would be solved by magic for a whole new set of problems caused by it's existance.

I'm talking to you through a magical instant transmission device.

You'd have to use the 80/20 rule effectively even with magic. So yeah, it's no use to you if doing a lot of useless stuff with your magic.

That would be cool, but that also would be dangerous.

I feel that if magic existed it would be seriously abused. If not by everyday people, then definitely the rich who would abuse it to either gain more power and wealth or to subjugate those with lesser power.

How would you even go about getting a conviction against someone in an arsony case if magic was a thing? They don't need to touch anything, they just need to point their hands, wands, making incantations with their mouth etc I mean all of those methods in most crimes it would be almost impossible to come up with a conviction.

Just watch Someday's Dreamers, and you will realize that it isn't necessarily a better world if magic existed. While it would allow unlimited possibilities, at the same time if it goes unregulated that will lead to all sorts of chaos. Bottom line is that it has to have regulations if it does come to this world as quite a lot of bad things will happen if not. So yeah, it would be a mixed bag there as the biggest issue would be to keep it from running amok, which is much harder to do when it was magic behind it.

I like Alan Moore's interpretation of magic the best. In which he says that magic is indistinguishable from art whether it be writing, music, sculpture, or any other form. He supports his proposition by stating that magic is referred to in early texts simply as "the art". Also, books of spells were referred to as "grimoires" in the past which is another way of saying "grammar" and to cast a spell means simply to spell. He states that magic is simply the manipulation of symbols, words, or images, to achieve changes in consciousness. With that in mind I'd say magic does exist and you probably use it every day (or at least are exposed to it).

If you are asking about video game magic, then no. Too dangerous.

No. We'd still be stuck in the same dump.
