Just wondering what every one thinks about this, do you think the world would be better if people could use magic?

No, nor would it be worse.

Any issues magic solved would likely be offset by the new problems it presents, since human nature would be unchanged.

Guy above me is right ^. Personally I'd be happier, depending on the sort of magic I could do.

Well, we would have more ways to kill and torture one another, but then again I probably would not have to get up to turn off the light switch. The world wouldn't be any better or worse. Magic would just expand our options a little bit and probably make us lazier.

Yeah, we could play LOL in real life. Jokes aside, it would make certain aspects of life way easier.

It would depend on the kinds of magic. Like with technology and free trade, magic would benefit the people who have exclusive access to it but not to the enemy or competitors of those people. I would certainly not like the idea that magic could create monsters to steal jobs from humans. Zetsuen No Tempest, Accel World, Full Metal Alchemist, and Fairy Tail are some of the anime that discuss this issue with magic. I already wrote two fiction stories in the Crunchyroll forum, Fall of Utopia Fantasy and War in Cyberspace 2016, that discuss this issue as well.

Depends on your definition of magic. To me there is no difference between magic and science because in anime magic are just part of the world that people manipulate. Science can do the same thing. If magic is some unknown power then no the world wouldnt be better it would be chaotic since there will be random magical threats all the time.

in a way we can, not like in movies and animation and I would find that to be a horrible choice on the second option, I can only imagine the chaos that would bring about. we're better off not having that sort of thing going on.

I'm surprised how many people think it wouldn't make any difference. That would only be the case if magic were severely limited in scope. If it is reasonably powerful and covers all the areas one would expect, it would revolutionize the world. Incurable diseases? Not with magic. Relatively short lifespan? Magic. Transportation issues? Not with magical gates or teleportation. Can't grow enough food to feed the hungry? Magic. Can't build star ships, space elevators, or other cool things because of the limitations of physics or materials? MAGIC!

Yes, magic would be used for military purposes and some things like lengthening lifespans might be restricted to the super rich, but magic would open up a ton of new jobs and possibilities in science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, and education. Depending on how it worked, the crafting of magical items might become serious business too that would require a lot of laborers and help offset the coming problems with increased automation.

Even if magic couldn't solve every problem completely--or even most of them--it would be a huge deal.

To people in the past, our present technology can be considered "magic". Is the world better now?

No.

Because I'd have magic.

And if I had magic.....

The world would not be a better place.

The idea of magic is interesting because what is the definition of magic? Most people define it as "unexplained power"

The official definition is "the power of apparently influencing the course of events by using mysterious or supernatural forces."

If magic DID exist, we wouldn't call it magic. To illustrate this, imagine a world where electricity didn't exist, but there were stories about this "electric force" magic. In our world, we used to describe electricity as magic until it became under scientific investigation. If magic existed, we wouldn't call it magic because we would have scientists that study the phenomenon.
