As a man or woman stranded naked, freezing & starving on a mysterious island, you must hunt, harvest, craft items, grow crops, & build shelters to survive. Use skill & cunning to kill, tame, breed, & ride Dinosaurs & primeval creatures living on ARK, and team up with hundreds of players or play locally!

Currently in Early Access. The full game comes out at end of this month or next week. I'm pretty interested in getting this after seeing the gameplay and reading a lot more into the wiki. Thoughts on this? (for those who have been playing the Early Acess version)

I was one of the people pissed off when they decided to start releasing paid DLC while the game is still in Early Access. Not only that - but the DLC content (e.g. tamed dragons) can be brought over to Vanilla servers, which is rather pay-to-win.

While I'm not terribly pleased with the direction they've been going, the game was pretty fun - if buggy and poorly optimized. You'll need a pretty beefy system to run it well, as I recall.

I'm kind of iffy on whether I'd recommend it currently.. I basically gave up on it and haven't played in quite some time, but I do remember it being fun once-upon-a-time.

I've been playing it on Xbox One for the past year and it's really enjoyable. I avoid PvP though because it's filled with nothing but trolls.

It's fun. I've moved on to Dark & Light but I spent many hours, 281....., on ARK just enjoying taming and building bases. They have done a lot of improvements so that it doesn't require a crazy rig to run it. I was using an old 560 Ti with 16gb ram and a processor that wasn't even an i5 yet on max settings just fine. It didn't even have any real noticeable drops going from area to area or loading in bases. As for the DLC I played on an unofficial server so I just ignored its existence entirely. Going that route takes away any unfair advantage someone could have. I must say though that some of the content of the DLC looked interesting and almost tempted me enough to buy it.

TL;DR
The base game is fun and worth the money if you enjoy that style of survival game.
...Also beware the Troodon...and Pegomastax...damn thieving bastards....

Also to further the point of not needing a real powerhouse of a computer these are the minimum requirements:
MINIMUM:
OS: 64-Bit Windows 7 Service Pack 1, or Windows 8
Processor: 2 GHz Dual-Core 64-bit CPU
Memory: 4000 MB RAM
Graphics: DirectX10 Compatible GPU with 1 GB Video RAM
DirectX: Version 10
Storage: 40000 MB available space

I have been playing on PS4. I love it. Building, taming, I guess the only problem is when you run solo. You start getting lots of dinos and run out of space. Pretty much just log into feed them nowadays. Just waiting for release of those new servers to move to them. Overall good, there is some lag now but we'll wait for relese and see what more improvements they add.

I like the game, even though it does have some instability and optimization issues this close to launch still.
The business model of the dlc after the game cost, and they made it more afterwards.
I've been testing it for a long time, but not sunk a ton of hours into it.
Basically everything wrong is fixable, and it is a nice replacement that was the disappointment of the stomping lands.

The game leaves Early Access today!

I'll probably hold off on purchasing this though until next month.

Only get this game if you have a bunch of friends who are willing to play whenever you are. Otherwise it's boring. Just finished playing a session of it myself. The game has this weird thing where everything is fuzzy in the distance.

This

Online servers are full of the most frustrating people. I just do private servers with some friends.

I started playing again on a PVE unofficial server. Once you play with certain mods its hard to go back. Figured I'd try out a ragnarok map. Pretty fun till you get roasted by a wyvern who has a bigger aggro radius than you anticipated.

If I am remembering correctly the only DLC that costs money right now is Scorched Earth and IMO is not worth getting at all. I never played it but while reading about various aspects of the game I have only encountered a few praises for that DLC versus many many complaints.

Ragnarok is the DLC I am currently playing with on an unofficial server and it is a really nice map. For me, it is a nice change from The Island map that I played over 200 hours on. It feels smaller but from my explorations it doesn't seem like you have to go far for the different resources which can make starting out way nicer...it also adds creatures that I am very interested in such as wyverns and griffins without me needing to get Scorched Earth.

The Center is one I never tried out but I hear great things about it. Apparently the resources are spread out nicely and it is massive in size so if you want to go PvP you can isolate yourself more easily until you can get yourself set up.

Primitive+ I never bothered with either. It just doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. I don't really care for the high end tek level stuff but I like the idea of being stuck to just primitive stuff even less. To each their own though and so if that sounds like something you would prefer go for it.

As for Abberation, while it is not out yet and it will not be free I am much more interested in it than I ever was with Scorched Earth. I'll wait till I get a lot more info on it but it might be something I find worth purchasing in the future.

I got the game around 2 years ago. and while extremely time consuming it is super fun. it is more fun with friends but if you like to pvp its really hard to get set up to even attempt to pvp unless your on a server that has 100x xp and 10x gather which i always found really cheatsy and boring.I play mostly by myself in a pvt world cus most of my friends cant play the game an the only on i can play with is 3 hours behind me in time zones so i have to stay up late to play. As for the paid dlc before early access was done, honestly i liked it and i think it was worth it. this is an early access game that had versions on both of the major counsels before it left early access so its already a given that the game is good. People who complain about the dlc being "bullshit" don't seem to realize that this is probably something they made on the side and because of the amount of work they put in (most likely on the clock) they are gonna have to charge something for it.

i would say its a good 8/10. when its better optimized it will go to a 10/10 from me.
