I'm an NGE fanboy for sure, been that way for a long time now and at this point I don't expect to see anything that would change my mind. Comedy is phenomenal and I remember enjoying what I watched of Umaru (definitely on the list to go back and finish one day), but personally I lean towards getting more mileage out of the opposite end of the spectrum.

Can't subsist on it long term though, so with long breaks interspersed to watch funner things.

Seems you've seen more than I have since I haven't heard of that one.

Let us not be mean, Kkmenchi.

Anyhoo, best anime? Obvious Gabriel Dropout. Satanichia Macdowell Kurumizawa, man...I would never stop adopting the fuck out of her. My onii-chan loving will be never more than intense than it is for Satania.

Hmmmmmmm. Tough question. I guess New Game and New Game + is near the top for me because it is so laid back and has good characters with development. Also because of Hajime.. Ranma 1/2 for getting me into anime despite Happosai is up there too.

Hifumi and Hajime

Very tough question. The word "best" is something i generally avoid using.

I've seen a lot over the few years. Some good, some bad. But enough of that, time to answer the question. I say, from my Top 5 list, i pick Food Wars!.

Neon Genesis Evangelion. No other anime quite matches its quality. Only a select few deserve to be said in the same sentence as it for GOAT anime.

We already have a thread for favorites, and in my experience threads about "best" with no encouragement for people to say briefly why they consider their choice(s) to qualify as "best" simply end up being a list of shows people like, without much to distinguish it from the "Favorites" thread.

Even your opening post doesn't say what about your choice makes it better than other comedy anime you've seen.

Please add more to your opening post talking about what kinds of things you think are good criteria for "best", and asking others to share some of their thoughts about what makes something best, or what makes their choice "best." (You can edit your post by clicking "Edit" in the upper right corner of your post.)

To others joining the thread, please make an effort to discuss the idea of "best" and say why you think the title you chose to list is best.

If the thread just becomes a list of titles I'll close it.

It's impossible for there to be a best anime, although the two that I enjoyed the most and think about the most, and that have impacted me the most are Bebop and Hunter X Hunter.

Hmmm. "Best" is a pretty subjective term. There are just so many genre choices that I can't easily give a "best" series out of the whole of anime. Much easier time if I were asked "what's the best mecha?" or "What's the best rom-com?"

I think I will go with Steins;Gate though. It isn't the best animation out there, but it's serviceable and shows good art direction. And it showcases a variety of genres, plus does them justice. It's funny where it needs to be funny. It's sad where it needs to be sad. Etc. etc.

Also, (as far as the first viewing goes) there is absolutely nothing predictable about the plot. You're kept completely unaware of what might happen next, which adds a huge excitement factor into the equation, making the anime pretty damn hard to put down once you're on a roll with your viewing.

That all being said. If I gave this question more thought I could very well choose a different series. Having watched 500 anime I'm to the point where it's a little hard to keep track of all my favorites.
