I haven't had a chance to watch yet. But I have abysmal expectations.

There has never once been an accurate adaptation of Death Note, and I doubt there ever will.

However, I'm very much open to being proven wrong

I haven't watched it but I knew it was going to be bad. From the moment it went from TV series to anime movie. Then the trailers. They should have just cancelled it. I don't understand why live action anime adaptations can't get competent writers.

IMO they don't take the source material as seriously as they would for say a novel or even a comic book.

There is literally no reason an anime (or even a manga for that matter) cannot be translated on-screen.

It's all because the directors and exec producers etc. don't actually care about the source if it's from ainme or manga. That is to say, they always think they can recreate it and make it their own.

And it never works out

I'll probably still check out the first episode, just to get a feel...

Yeah I really don't understand. Like they went as far to make the hard parts (Shinigami), but will let the plot suck. They try to Hollywood stereotype the movie, and that doesn't work. Stereotypical movies never fair well.

If they would have adapted the source material to a say, 3 part movie, it could have been great. Well if it had competent directors and producers.

Okay I started watching it, and it really sucks. Wtf. I could write a story better than this. It's as bad as Dragon Ball Evolution

whenever Hollywood gets something I always approach it neutral, watch and then device. I expect them all to be like Dragon Ball Evolution, when they aren't then that's a bonus. in my opinion DB Evolution was the worst Hollywood live action from Japan franchise that I can remember.

Lowest of the low then hopefully something about it might surprise me.

I went in with low expectations... I knew there would be several changes... But wow! Way too many changes. It was super upsetting even though I knew by watching the trailer it was going to be eh

Literally none, considering I've watched the entirety of that anime, had my moment with it, and stopped caring about it years ago. lol

I have low expectations for adaptations or remakes of anything that was already great to begin with. Death Note was already a fantastic anime and manga, which just made this adaptation all the more unnecessary. I didn't watch it, and after what I've heard about the film, I'm glad I stayed wary.

As a rule, I have low expectations on all adaptations, but as soon as they said they were 'Americanizing' it I knew it would be bad. It was awful. The anime/manga was the intellectual and the movie was it's beefy half-witted cousin no one wants to admit exists.
