One of the main characters of the anime, Kurosaki Ichigo is introduced carrying an image of a teenager with weird orange hair that carries a heart of gold. He beats up people who disturb the resting place of innocent souls. Ichigo is not your average 15 year old high school student. What separates Ichigo from regular people is that he has the ability to see supernatural entities due to his high spirit energy commonly referred to as “reiatsu” in the anime.
Ichigo is a student in the local high school of Karakura town where he studies there and does some minor exorcising jobs after classes. Ichigo’s life takes a drastic turn when his town starts experiencing strange occurrences of earthquakes and random explosions. However when Ichigo was actually at the scene when the occurrences happened, he sees a huge monster wearing a white ghastly mask on its face and has a hole in its body. Not knowing what was going on, Ichigo runs for cover but is saved just in time by a girl dressed in typical black Kendo uniform ( minus the armour plates) holding a katana in her right hand. The girl then leaves without saying a single word.
Back at home, Ichigo ponders the events of the day when all of a sudden the very same girl who had saved him evidently walks through the wall of his bedroom. Obviously surprised, Ichigo calls out to the strange intruder but receives no answer. The intruder seems to be talking to herself. Ichigo finally gets her attention when he gives her a kick to the back of the head.
The girl introduces herself as a death god , or as a “shinigami” in Japanese romaji terms. She came from a place called “soul society” and is here to exterminate monsters which she refers to as “hollows”. That would be the same monster that attacked Ichigo and caused damage to Karakura town earlier. Suddenly a scream is heard from somewhere within the house and Ichigo and the female shinigami rush to its source. Outside, Ichigo sees his sisters Yuzu and Karin being attacked by another huge and monstrous hollow.
Ichigo tries to rush to their aid but is held down by the shinigami saying that he can’t possibly defeat the monster. Ichigo refuses to accept that and picks up a chair to confront the hollow with. He challenges the monster and is nearly killed by its rushing attack but once again, Ichigo is saved by the shinigami. Taking a hit from the monster’s jaws in return from protecting Ichigo, she is unable to continue on with the fight. She then concludes that the only way the hollow can be killed is to make Ichigo a shinigami as well. She does that by piercing the tip of her sword or “zanpakutou”( once again in Japanese romaji format ) into Ichigo’s heart and then spiritual power will be transferred.
The female shinigami introduces herself as Kuchiki Rukia just as she plunges the blade into Ichigo’s heart. Ichigo is transformed thus into a shinigami wielding a huge zanpakutou with a rectangular blade. He then goes on and defeats the hollow single handedly. Rukia watches in awe at the size of Ichigo’s zanpakutou. The size of a shinigami’s zanpakutou is relative to the amount of reiatsu of its wielder. Also, Rukia only intended to transfer a small amount of her powers to Ichigo but unfortunately for her, Ichigo naturally absorbed all of Rukia’s powers into him during the transfer. Leaving Rukia as just a common soul with very low reiatsu.
The next morning, Rukia erases the events that had happened the night before from Ichigo’s sisters for the sake of everyone and she decides to stay with Ichigo for awhile to recover her powers before she returns to Soul Society. Ichigo’s journey as a shinigami now begins.

However, looks can be are deceiving, especially in Ichigo's case, as behind that rough exterior is a kind-hearted person who cares for his friends, family, and all of humanity. Ichigo lives with his father, Isshin Kurosaki, and sisters, Yuzu and Karin Kurosaki. His mother, whom he loved very much, was killed by a Hollow when he was younger. His father, who is very much alive, runs a small medical clinic in their house, and constantly fights with Ichigo. His father often lands surprise attacks on Ichigo and claims that Ichigo should always be alert. In the end though, Ichigo always wins.
Ichigo, a stand out because of his orange hair, is usually involved in many fights with the upperclassmen in his school because of his looks. Ichigo claims that he does not care what others think about his hair, or anything else in general, and does stuff the way he wants it to be done. Of the children, Ichigo has the highest amount of spiritual power. He is the top student in his class and is also part of the fine crafts club, being a master of sewing and design. Captain Character Profile

Deep within Soul Society lies the world of souls. The sections upon Soul Society is known as Ryokga which means normal souls. Within the center of the Ryokga sections lies the Court Of Pure Souls. The Gotei 13 or also known as the Court Guardians reside over Ryokga and the Court Of Pure souls. They are the league of Shingami who protect Earth from hollows or any other strange beings. As with all leagues, they have their society system as well as the ranking system from Captains to Vice-Captains and so on. Below are the Captains of the Gotei 13.
1st Division Captain: Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryuusai
Not much is known about the first division captain He is basically the general of the Gotei 13 and captain of the 1st Division. He is regarded as the Authoritarian figure in Soul Society having lived for so long and having great respect for his knowledge and power alike. In fact, he is so powerful that the 8th Division Vice Captain, Nanao Ise, fell to to her knees and was immobilize just by Yamamoto's spiritual pressure. His zanpakutou is the oldest and most powerful Zanpakutou and has the greatest attack power in Soul Society

2nd Division Captain: Soi Fong
Soi Fong is the second division captain. She became captain when the former 2nd Division captain Shihouin Yoruichi mysteriously left. Throughout her life Soi Fong was brought up into a low noble class family dedicated to serve Shihouin Yoruichi and the 2nd Division. Although she was a girl and resented by some in the military she worked hard and worked her way up to Executive Militia Commanders Personal Guard Unit where she was treated in a casual manner by Shihouin Yoruichi whom she treated her as a equal. This made Soi fong often blush, but Yoruichi didn’t mind as long as Soi Fong at least called her Yoruichi or Yoruichi-Sama as Soi Fong called her. Her first appearance was during the execution of Kuchiki Rukia where she planned two kill one of the 13th Division shinigamis for betraying the Gotei 13. She was then stopped by none other than Shihouin Yoruichi. Soi Fong attacked her with the armed military forces where they were defeated. She released her Shikai Suzumebachi which was used to momentarily seduce Yoruichi by putting a butterfly imprint everywhere she struck. She was defeated when she used a skill known as flash cry which was a technique combined with fighting and Shinigami powers. Yoruichi who was already a master of flash cry stopped the battle.

3rd Division Captain: Ichimaru Gin
The 3rd Division Captain Ichimaru Gin has has never been seen without a smile in the anime. Behind that smile though, is an evil man. Ichimaru Gin is a name feared throughout the Soul Society, for example, when the White Gate Guardian, Jidanbou, saw him, his whole body quivered in fear at just the sight of this Captain. His soul cutter's name is "Shinsou", and once awakened by its Ichimaru, can extend to great distances and still push with amazing force and speed just like its user. His goal was revealed to us when he, Aizen and Tousen betrayed the Soul Society after stealing the crumbling treasure inside Rukia’s soul to attain the powers of a Hollow.

4th Division Captain: Unohana Retsu
The 4th Division Captain Unohana is a soft-spoken, caring woman.. She is very polite and uses respects everyone, even those below her. Unohana never seems to show panic or distress even in times of distress. She kept calm when Soul Society was under attack and healed everyone, even including Renji who betrayed Soul Scoiety by picking a fight with Byakuya. Despire her soft and caring nature, it seems that she is a very powerful Captain as officers from the 11th division seem to be afraid of Unohana.

5th Division Captain: Aizen Sousuke
The 5th squad Captain Aizen Sousuke, seems like a smart and soft-spoken man and appears to be very kind to his subordinates. In reality, however, he does not care for them at all. According to Aizen himself, he is not bound by morals and will therefore stop at nothing to achieve his goals. In addition to that, he manipulates many, including his enemies, into helping him achieve these goals. Aizen is extremely adept at combat. While it is not clear, it's implied that he has reached the limit of his Shinigami power in all four forms of Shinigami combat: swordsmanship, hand-to-hand combat, footwork and demon arts. It is implied that since he can't advance any further as far as Shinigami powers are concerned. He can effortlessly defeat several captain-level opponents at once, and is one of the strongest characters in the series. His goal is to continue his growth by attaining the powers of a Hollow.

6th Division Captain: Kuchiki Byakuya
The 6th Divison Kuchiki Byakuya is the silent and powerful captain. He is the 28th head of the noble Kuchiki clan, one of the four noble families in Soul Society. As such, Byakuya acts in an aristocratic manner - always being serene and apathetic about other people. Byakuya is possibly the strongest person in his clan's history. He wears the standard captain uniform along with a white headpiece called a Kenseikan (symbolizing his noble rank as the head of the Kuchiki family) and a white scarf. He tends to carry out an air of authority and arrogance which matches his demeanor. As a noble descendent he carries out his strict duties under any circumstances. After fighting and being defeated by Ichigo, Byakuya explained to Rukia that he made two promises that he should not have made. He first made a promise to his parents that he would follow the rules no matter what the circumstances he ended up breaking that and married a commoner instead of a person of nobility like he was supposed to. The second promise was to his wife Hisana who requested Byakuya find her sister and protect her. He was breaking that promise by having her executed, but he realized he should keep the promise to the wife he loved and ended up keeping it because he risked his own life and took a blow fired by Ichimaru Gin to save Rukia.

7th Division Captain: Komamura Sajin
Komamura is very large in size, towering over all of the other captains. He seems to be a human with a fox's head. Komamura was initially very self-conscious of his appetence and tried to hide his spiritual energy, and face so that people would not notice him. He is friends with 9th Division Captain Tousen because Tousen's view on life was similar to his - that life should be followed in accordence to justice. Later on he fought with Captain Aizen during the invasion of Soul Society and lost easily. When he saw his friend, Tousen, on Captain Aizen's side he felt angry, and couldn't understand why Tousen would side with Aizen. Afterwards he had gained the confidence to remove the helmet he wore to cover his face with a goal of helping Tousen see that Aizen's ways are wrong and that he must see what evil Aizen is really up to.

8th Division Captain: Kyouraku Shunsui
8th Division Captain Kyouraku Shunsui is known to be a laid back Captain that does not enjoy violence and will always try to talk his way out of a fight. He does not wish to insult opponents by not fighting, he merely just rather avoid a fight. As a captain, he is an extremely powerful fighter with numerous abilities. As he trained under General Yamamoto himself, it is likely that Kyouraku is somewhat on the stronger side as far as captains go.
He wears a straw hat and a gaudy pink coat over his captain's uniform. He likes to chase after women and often flirts with his vice-captain, calling her "my Nanao-chan". He is fond of drinking sake and is close friends with 13th Division Captain, Jushiro Ukitake (who was also trained under General Yamamoto).

9th Division Captain: Tousen Kaname
The 9th Division Captain Tousen Kaname was first thought to dislike fighting and violence, but later on in the betrayal of Aizen, he follows Captain Aizen and Captain Gin for strength thinking this is justice that is good for everyone. His friendship with 7th Division Captain Komamura was torn apart because of this. He sees Justice as a part of destiny and believed that the path of bloodshed and destruction in the road to Justice when he betrayed the Gotei 13.

10th Division Captain: Hitsugaya Toushiro
10th Hitsugaya Toushiro is the youngest in person to have become a captain in Soul Society. He is called a "boy genius" by many. Hitsugaya is generally mature and serious, in contrast to his free-spirited vice captain, Rangiku Matsumoto. Despite their philosophical differences, they seem to be very close. He is, however, easily annoyed when anyonees refers to him by anything other than his title, Captain Hitsugaya. His long time friend, Hinamori has gotten away with "Hitsugaya-kun", and both she and Captain Ukitake have occasionally called him "Whitey-chan" (refering to his hair). He is also overly protective of Hinamori, although she was once like an older sister to him.
During his fight with Ichimaru Gin, Ichimaru remarks that Hitsugaya is the embodiment of the heavenly guardian that is born into Soul Society every few centuries. This may explain his extra-ordinarily rapid growth and why he is a respected captain despite his age. Alternately, Gin may have been speaking sarcastically, saying that Hitsugaya did not seem to live up to his title as he was easily defeated despite using his Bankai.

11th Division Captain: Zaraki Kenpachi
11th Division Captain Zaraki Kenpachi is the most feared and powerful of the Gotei 13. Just his spirit force can bring people to their knees in pain. In fact, he wears a special eye patch, which is actually an energy-sucking creature to contain his immense spiritual pressure. Both of these are meant to give enemies an advantage so that he can have even fights with weaker opponents. He enjoys a good fight more than anything and weakens himself in an effort to make the fight last longer. Zaraki lives to fight, and tries to drag out each fight as long as possible and make it as even as possible. He claims that injury and death are nothing but the price one pays for a good fight.

12th Division Captain: Kurotsuchi Mayuri
12th Division Captain Kurotshuchi Mayuri is one of the strangest captains in the Gotei 13. He looks and acts quite different than the other Shinigami. He is the current head of the demon craft development bureaucracy and the President of the research institute of technology. Along with that he is one of the evilest and cruelest captains in the Gotei 13. He sacrificed his own men to attempt killing Inoue and Ishida. Ishida fought him at which he was about to lose, but by breaking open his power glove, he unleashed an onslaught of power that tore away half of Mayuri’s body. He however escaped by materializing into a liquid form which seeped away in the cracks on the walls. He happens to be the one who ordered the destruction of all Quincys. His creations were Zaraki’s eye patch, and his Vice Captain Nemu, who he often beats, is his creation (but is refered to as his daughter). Although he may be evil he doesn’t interfere with things that don’t concern him such as Aizen’s betrayal. He is more concerned, and actually obsessed, with conducting experiments and gathering data.

13th Division Captain: Ukitake Juushiro
Ukitake is a very powerful Shinimagi, however, he suffers from an illness and can only fight for short periods of time. He often left the daily operations of the 13th Division to Shiba Kaien, when Kaien was alive. He is honest, loyal and believes in his personal sense of justice. This is why he is respected by many, especially by his subordinates. These qualities date back to his days at the Shinigami academy, where he was always the center of attention. He is considered honorable and trustworthy by many, such that former second division captain, Shihouin Yoruichi, leaves Kuchiki Rukia, Hanataro Yamada and Shiba Ganju behind when she rescues Ichigo from Byakuya, knowing that Ukitake would not let any harm come to the three.
Like Kaien, Ukitake does not give up when he believes something is wrong and will break the rules if he must. He is close friends with 8th Division Captain Kyouraku, since his youth, and was trained under General Yamamato just like Kyouraku.

Although she was a girl and resented by some in the military she worked hard and worked her way up to Executive Militia Commanders Personal Guard Unit where she was treated in a casual manner by Shihouin Yoruichi whom she treated her as a equal. This made Soi fong often blush, but Yoruichi didn’t mind as long as Soi Fong at least called her Yoruichi or Yoruichi-Sama as Soi Fong called her. Her first appearance was during the execution of Kuchiki Rukia where she planned two kill one of the 13th Division shinigamis for betraying the Gotei 13. She was then stopped by none other than Shihouin Yoruichi. Soi Fong attacked her with the armed military forces where they were defeated. She released her Shikai Suzumebachi which was used to momentarily seduce Yoruichi by putting a butterfly imprint everywhere she struck. She was defeated when she used a skill known as flash cry which was a technique combined with fighting and Shinigami powers. Yoruichi who was already a master of flash cry stopped the battle.

3rd Division Captain: Ichimaru Gin
The 3rd Division Captain Ichimaru Gin has has never been seen without a smile in the anime. Behind that smile though, is an evil man. Ichimaru Gin is a name feared throughout the Soul Society, for example, when the White Gate Guardian, Jidanbou, saw him, his whole body quivered in fear at just the sight of this Captain. His soul cutter's name is "Shinsou", and once awakened by its Ichimaru, can extend to great distances and still push with amazing force and speed just like its user. His goal was revealed to us when he, Aizen and Tousen betrayed the Soul Society after stealing the crumbling treasure inside Rukia’s soul to attain the powers of a Hollow.

4th Division Captain: Unohana Retsu
The 4th Division Captain Unohana is a soft-spoken, caring woman.. She is very polite and uses respects everyone, even those below her. Unohana never seems to show panic or distress even in times of distress. She kept calm when Soul Society was under attack and healed everyone, even including Renji who betrayed Soul Scoiety by picking a fight with Byakuya. Despire her soft and caring nature, it seems that she is a very powerful Captain as officers from the 11th division seem to be afraid of Unohana.

5th Division Captain: Aizen Sousuke
The 5th squad Captain Aizen Sousuke, seems like a smart and soft-spoken man and appears to be very kind to his subordinates. In reality, however, he does not care for them at all. According to Aizen himself, he is not bound by morals and will therefore stop at nothing to achieve his goals. In addition to that, he manipulates many, including his enemies, into helping him achieve these goals. Aizen is extremely adept at combat. While it is not clear, it's implied that he has reached the limit of his Shinigami power in all four forms of Shinigami combat: swordsmanship, hand-to-hand combat, footwork and demon arts. It is implied that since he can't advance any further as far as Shinigami powers are concerned. He can effortlessly defeat several captain-level opponents at once, and is one of the strongest characters in the series. His goal is to continue his growth by attaining the powers of a Hollow.

6th Division Captain: Kuchiki Byakuya
The 6th Divison Kuchiki Byakuya is the silent and powerful captain. He is the 28th head of the noble Kuchiki clan, one of the four noble families in Soul Society. As such, Byakuya acts in an aristocratic manner - always being serene and apathetic about other people. Byakuya is possibly the strongest person in his clan's history. He wears the standard captain uniform along with a white headpiece called a Kenseikan (symbolizing his noble rank as the head of the Kuchiki family) and a white scarf. He tends to carry out an air of authority and arrogance which matches his demeanor. As a noble descendent he carries out his strict duties under any circumstances. After fighting and being defeated by Ichigo, Byakuya explained to Rukia that he made two promises that he should not have made. He first made a promise to his parents that he would follow the rules no matter what the circumstances he ended up breaking that and married a commoner instead of a person of nobility like he was supposed to. The second promise was to his wife Hisana who requested Byakuya find her sister and protect her. He was breaking that promise by having her executed, but he realized he should keep the promise to the wife he loved and ended up keeping it because he risked his own life and took a blow fired by Ichimaru Gin to save Rukia.

7th Division Captain: Komamura Sajin
Komamura is very large in size, towering over all of the other captains. He seems to be a human with a fox's head. Komamura was initially very self-conscious of his appetence and tried to hide his spiritual energy, and face so that people would not notice him. He is friends with 9th Division Captain Tousen because Tousen's view on life was similar to his - that life should be followed in accordence to justice. Later on he fought with Captain Aizen during the invasion of Soul Society and lost easily. When he saw his friend, Tousen, on Captain Aizen's side he felt angry, and couldn't understand why Tousen would side with Aizen. Afterwards he had gained the confidence to remove the helmet he wore to cover his face with a goal of helping Tousen see that Aizen's ways are wrong and that he must see what evil Aizen is really up to.

8th Division Captain: Kyouraku Shunsui
8th Division Captain Kyouraku Shunsui is known to be a laid back Captain that does not enjoy violence and will always try to talk his way out of a fight. He does not wish to insult opponents by not fighting, he merely just rather avoid a fight. As a captain, he is an extremely powerful fighter with numerous abilities. As he trained under General Yamamoto himself, it is likely that Kyouraku is somewhat on the stronger side as far as captains go.
He wears a straw hat and a gaudy pink coat over his captain's uniform. He likes to chase after women and often flirts with his vice-captain, calling her "my Nanao-chan". He is fond of drinking sake and is close friends with 13th Division Captain, Jushiro Ukitake (who was also trained under General Yamamoto).

9th Division Captain: Tousen Kaname
The 9th Division Captain Tousen Kaname was first thought to dislike fighting and violence, but later on in the betrayal of Aizen, he follows Captain Aizen and Captain Gin for strength thinking this is justice that is good for everyone. His friendship with 7th Division Captain Komamura was torn apart because of this. He sees Justice as a part of destiny and believed that the path of bloodshed and destruction in the road to Justice when he betrayed the Gotei 13.

10th Division Captain: Hitsugaya Toushiro
10th Hitsugaya Toushiro is the youngest in person to have become a captain in Soul Society. He is called a "boy genius" by many. Hitsugaya is generally mature and serious, in contrast to his free-spirited vice captain, Rangiku Matsumoto. Despite their philosophical differences, they seem to be very close. He is, however, easily annoyed when anyonees refers to him by anything other than his title, Captain Hitsugaya. His long time friend, Hinamori has gotten away with "Hitsugaya-kun", and both she and Captain Ukitake have occasionally called him "Whitey-chan" (refering to his hair). He is also overly protective of Hinamori, although she was once like an older sister to him.
During his fight with Ichimaru Gin, Ichimaru remarks that Hitsugaya is the embodiment of the heavenly guardian that is born into Soul Society every few centuries. This may explain his extra-ordinarily rapid growth and why he is a respected captain despite his age. Alternately, Gin may have been speaking sarcastically, saying that Hitsugaya did not seem to live up to his title as he was easily defeated despite using his Bankai.

11th Division Captain: Zaraki Kenpachi
11th Division Captain Zaraki Kenpachi is the most feared and powerful of the Gotei 13. Just his spirit force can bring people to their knees in pain. In fact, he wears a special eye patch, which is actually an energy-sucking creature to contain his immense spiritual pressure. Both of these are meant to give enemies an advantage so that he can have even fights with weaker opponents. He enjoys a good fight more than anything and weakens himself in an effort to make the fight last longer. Zaraki lives to fight, and tries to drag out each fight as long as possible and make it as even as possible. He claims that injury and death are nothing but the price one pays for a good fight.

12th Division Captain: Kurotsuchi Mayuri
12th Division Captain Kurotshuchi Mayuri is one of the strangest captains in the Gotei 13. He looks and acts quite different than the other Shinigami. He is the current head of the demon craft development bureaucracy and the President of the research institute of technology. Along with that he is one of the evilest and cruelest captains in the Gotei 13. He sacrificed his own men to attempt killing Inoue and Ishida. Ishida fought him at which he was about to lose, but by breaking open his power glove, he unleashed an onslaught of power that tore away half of Mayuri’s body. He however escaped by materializing into a liquid form which seeped away in the cracks on the walls. He happens to be the one who ordered the destruction of all Quincys. His creations were Zaraki’s eye patch, and his Vice Captain Nemu, who he often beats, is his creation (but is refered to as his daughter). Although he may be evil he doesn’t interfere with things that don’t concern him such as Aizen’s betrayal. He is more concerned, and actually obsessed, with conducting experiments and gathering data.

13th Division Captain: Ukitake Juushiro
Ukitake is a very powerful Shinimagi, however, he suffers from an illness and can only fight for short periods of time. He often left the daily operations of the 13th Division to Shiba Kaien, when Kaien was alive. He is honest, loyal and believes in his personal sense of justice. This is why he is respected by many, especially by his subordinates. These qualities date back to his days at the Shinigami academy, where he was always the center of attention. He is considered honorable and trustworthy by many, such that former second division captain, Shihouin Yoruichi, leaves Kuchiki Rukia, Hanataro Yamada and Shiba Ganju behind when she rescues Ichigo from Byakuya, knowing that Ukitake would not let any harm come to the three.
Like Kaien, Ukitake does not give up when he believes something is wrong and will break the rules if he must. He is close friends with 8th Division Captain Kyouraku, since his youth, and was trained under General Yamamato just like Kyouraku.
Soul Slayers(Zanpaktou)

A Soul Slayer (Zanpakuto in Japanese and referred to here on out) is a sword that a Soul Reaper (Shinigami in Japanese and referred to as that here on out) yields. The sword's look reflects the user itself by the means of details like the hilt and cross guard. A Zanpakuto comes in 3 ways. The first is the sealed form, followed by two levels of seal release: the initial release (Shikai), and final release (Bankai). In the sealed form, most Zanpakuto resemble katanas, and do not exhibit any special abilities. The greater a shinigami's spiritual power, the larger the sword appears. As such, Isshin Kurosaki notes that high level shinigami must be capable of maintaining and suppressing the size of their sword, otherwise shinigami like the captains of the Gotei 13 would end up swinging around swords the size of skyscrapers.
A properly-trained shinigami can make his or her Zanpakuto smaller if they wish, or radically change its appearance (Kisuke Urahara's Benihime is, in sealed form, a cane). Shinigami usually carry their Zanpakuto in the sealed state, releasing them only when necessary, while there are shinigami, notably Ichigo Kurosaki has his Zanpakuto continuously in released form. Soul Society law prohibits the release of Zanpakuto within the walled city of Seireitei in times of peace. The literal meaning means "soul cutting sword". The art of using a Zanpakuto is called zanjutsu (swordsmanship).
Most Zanpakuto's in their sealed form look like katanas, but the shape and form varies by the person. Zanpakuto's are not just tools, but also living beings. They are a shinigami's partner in battle and while they can regenerate if broken, they cannot be replaced. As a shinigami gains power, the Zanpakuto can change form by the inner being manifesting itself to a greater degree in the outside world. The sword and the inner being are synonymous to each other. Zanpakuto's are used to fight hollows and other Shinigami as well as to liberate or help pluses ascend to Soul Society.
Initial release
The first level of seal release, shikai, is achieved by learning the sword's name. By speaking a command phrase to the sword (unique to each shinigami), the Zanpakuto will assume its released form. In released form, most Zanpakuto have a different physical appearance, as well as one or more special abilities, often reflecting a strength or the personality of the wielder. Achievement of the initial release is a mark of expert control of a Zanpakuto, and it appears to be a requirement for advancement within the shinigami ranks (most seated officers and presumably all lieutenants are capable of the initial release).
Final release
The second and final level of seal release is called bankai (also called full release). It is a rare capability usually limited to captain and sometimes vice captain-level shinigami. Those who attain this power are remembered throughout shinigami history.
To become capable of the final release, a shinigami must materialize the sword's personification and subjugate it. In the final form, the Zanpakuto assumes a third physical appearance, and can fully manifest itself in the outside world, increasing its power by five to ten times. All Zanpakuto in the final form possess some type of powerful ability. Most skilled users also have several special attacks while using the final release, which require them to say a special command, similar to the initial release. Maintaining full release is taxing for the wielder, and cannot be held for exceedingly long periods of time.
The final release (bankai) generally requires years of training to acquire, and another ten years to master. However, there have been two exceptions to this: Ichigo Kurosaki and Kisuke Urahara. They acquired their final releases within three days of training, using a method pioneered by Urahara. Normally, a shinigami must have the strength and ability to manifest the sword's spirit into the real world before he can even begin his final release training; Urahara's method involves forcibly calling the spirit of the Zanpakuto into the user's world through the use of a special doll. Thus, the years of training to acquire the knowledge and strength to begin the final release training can be bypassed.
Ashisogi Jizou (Beast Killing)

* Ability: Becomes a large slug-like creature with a grotesque infant's head, armed with blades in its stomach. It emits a toxic gaseous poison over a large radius that will kill whomever inhales it. The chest can also reveal a cache of spike-like weapons which this monster can charge at it's opponent with.

The sword creates a Chinese style dragon of ice from the overflow of reiatsu. The only physical change in the sword is the addition of a chain with a crescent moon on the end.
Final release: Daiguren Hyourinmaru (Ice Ring of the Great Frozen Hell)
* Ability: Summons individually mobile ice "flowers", and creates a dragon of ice around Hitsugaya's arm, the mouth of which holds the handle of the sword (the fact it is a dragon is hard to notice until seen from a side view), and clawed, dragon-like feet of ice around Hitsugaya's own feet. The dragon also has wings of ice and a long tail he can use to hit and freeze an enemy with. It encompasses the battlefield with ice, controllable by Hitsugaya. Any water or ice that already exists there can also be controlled. The sword can be regenerated from atmospheric moisture if it is destroyed. Anyone cut by it is encased in a block of ice.

When sealed, Yamamoto's sword is disguised in the form of a heavy staff.

* Ability: Byakuya drops the blade into the ground and causes two rows of huge katana blades to rise from the ground and scatter into petals, forming a large scale version of the initial release ability. The petals can also compress into a large number a swords to strike the opponent (Senkei Senbonzakura Kageyoshi) or be arranged around Byakuya in a winglike form and allow him to perform one overwhelmingly powerful strike upon the opponent.

Each section is connected to the next by an elastic substance that allows the weapons elongation. It shouldn't be confused with his final release that is held together by his spiritual power. However, if Zabimaru is broken, Renji can use his spirtual power to levitate the individual segments of the blade to strike the opponent. The move is called Higa Zekkou, it hurts Zabimaru as this isn't how the weapon is supposed to be used. This is a one shot attack as Renji doesn't have the spiritual power to do it a second time.
Final release: Hihiō Zabimaru (Baboon King Zabimaru)
* Ability: The blade appears as a giant snake skeleton and can fully function as long as Renji has power left. All the sections of the skeleton are connected by his spiritual power, allowing him to connect and disconnect the sections of bone at will. That ability allows Zabimaru to continue fighting even if some sections are destroyed. Its attacks are a more powerful, larger-scale versions of Zabimaru's. It is however difficult to control its movement, due to its enormous size.
Spirit: Baboon-like creature with a snake for a tail
Other Information - This weapon attacks in a pattern of 3 phases. After the 3rd phase, Zabimaru is forced to contract leaving an opening.

* Ability - Is able to release and aim a large amount of spirit energy at an opponent. This attack is called the Zangeki also known as "Moon fang striking the sky".
Final release: Tensa Zangetsu (Heavenly Chain Cutting the Moon) - Changes the Zanpakuto's form to a long, thin, completely black sword. Concentrates spiritual energy and increases the user's speed drastically. In this stage Ichigo's clothes also change.
Spirit: An older man in a black cape or cloak with glasses. Ichigo calls him Old Man or Uncle. The hollow form of Ichigo also reveals itself to be the alter-ego of Zangetsu in a sense. It claims to be the dominant persona of Ichigo's Zanpakuto and Ichigo has subdued him, though the hollow forms promises to seize any chance to become the one that controls Ichigo's physical body.
Other Information - This Soul Slayer cannot be sealed due to the fact that it is too powerful to be sealed.

In released form, most Zanpakuto have a different physical appearance, as well as one or more special abilities, often reflecting a strength or the personality of the wielder. Achievement of the initial release is a mark of expert control of a Zanpakuto, and it appears to be a requirement for advancement within the shinigami ranks (most seated officers and presumably all lieutenants are capable of the initial release).
Final release
The second and final level of seal release is called bankai (also called full release). It is a rare capability usually limited to captain and sometimes vice captain-level shinigami. Those who attain this power are remembered throughout shinigami history.
To become capable of the final release, a shinigami must materialize the sword's personification and subjugate it. In the final form, the Zanpakuto assumes a third physical appearance, and can fully manifest itself in the outside world, increasing its power by five to ten times. All Zanpakuto in the final form possess some type of powerful ability. Most skilled users also have several special attacks while using the final release, which require them to say a special command, similar to the initial release. Maintaining full release is taxing for the wielder, and cannot be held for exceedingly long periods of time.
The final release (bankai) generally requires years of training to acquire, and another ten years to master. However, there have been two exceptions to this: Ichigo Kurosaki and Kisuke Urahara. They acquired their final releases within three days of training, using a method pioneered by Urahara. Normally, a shinigami must have the strength and ability to manifest the sword's spirit into the real world before he can even begin his final release training; Urahara's method involves forcibly calling the spirit of the Zanpakuto into the user's world through the use of a special doll. Thus, the years of training to acquire the knowledge and strength to begin the final release training can be bypassed.

* Ability: Becomes a large slug-like creature with a grotesque infant's head, armed with blades in its stomach. It emits a toxic gaseous poison over a large radius that will kill whomever inhales it. The chest can also reveal a cache of spike-like weapons which this monster can charge at it's opponent with.

Final release: Daiguren Hyourinmaru (Ice Ring of the Great Frozen Hell)
* Ability: Summons individually mobile ice "flowers", and creates a dragon of ice around Hitsugaya's arm, the mouth of which holds the handle of the sword (the fact it is a dragon is hard to notice until seen from a side view), and clawed, dragon-like feet of ice around Hitsugaya's own feet. The dragon also has wings of ice and a long tail he can use to hit and freeze an enemy with. It encompasses the battlefield with ice, controllable by Hitsugaya. Any water or ice that already exists there can also be controlled. The sword can be regenerated from atmospheric moisture if it is destroyed. Anyone cut by it is encased in a block of ice.

When sealed, Yamamoto's sword is disguised in the form of a heavy staff.

* Ability: Byakuya drops the blade into the ground and causes two rows of huge katana blades to rise from the ground and scatter into petals, forming a large scale version of the initial release ability. The petals can also compress into a large number a swords to strike the opponent (Senkei Senbonzakura Kageyoshi) or be arranged around Byakuya in a winglike form and allow him to perform one overwhelmingly powerful strike upon the opponent.

* Ability: The blade produces seven outward-jutting blades along its length and can be extended to great length and swung as a daggertail-like weapon. Each section is connected to the next by an elastic substance that allows the weapons elongation. It shouldn't be confused with his final release that is held together by his spiritual power. However, if Zabimaru is broken, Renji can use his spirtual power to levitate the individual segments of the blade to strike the opponent. The move is called Higa Zekkou, it hurts Zabimaru as this isn't how the weapon is supposed to be used. This is a one shot attack as Renji doesn't have the spiritual power to do it a second time.
Final release: Hihiō Zabimaru (Baboon King Zabimaru)
* Ability: The blade appears as a giant snake skeleton and can fully function as long as Renji has power left. All the sections of the skeleton are connected by his spiritual power, allowing him to connect and disconnect the sections of bone at will. That ability allows Zabimaru to continue fighting even if some sections are destroyed. Its attacks are a more powerful, larger-scale versions of Zabimaru's. It is however difficult to control its movement, due to its enormous size.
Spirit: Baboon-like creature with a snake for a tail
Other Information - This weapon attacks in a pattern of 3 phases. After the 3rd phase, Zabimaru is forced to contract leaving an opening.

Zangetsu (Moon Cutter)

* Ability - Is able to release and aim a large amount of spirit energy at an opponent. This attack is called the Zangeki also known as "Moon fang striking the sky".
Final release: Tensa Zangetsu (Heavenly Chain Cutting the Moon) - Changes the Zanpakuto's form to a long, thin, completely black sword. Concentrates spiritual energy and increases the user's speed drastically. In this stage Ichigo's clothes also change.
Spirit: An older man in a black cape or cloak with glasses. Ichigo calls him Old Man or Uncle. The hollow form of Ichigo also reveals itself to be the alter-ego of Zangetsu in a sense. It claims to be the dominant persona of Ichigo's Zanpakuto and Ichigo has subdued him, though the hollow forms promises to seize any chance to become the one that controls Ichigo's physical body.
Other Information - This Soul Slayer cannot be sealed due to the fact that it is too powerful to be sealed.

There are two distinct entities revealed in Bleach thus far — humans and spirits. The humans are mostly ordinary-like real-life humans, and usually cannot see or sense spirits in any way. About 1 in 50,000 humans, however, can sense spirits and only a third of those humans can see them and sense them clearly. Spirits inhabiting human bodies can be sensed like ordinary humans. Some humans, such as the Quincy, have the power to not only sense but also fight on equal footing with spirits. Humans unable to sense spirits can gain the ability to do so by spending enough time around a large source of spirit energy, as is the case of Chad and Inoue who spent a lot of time around Ichigo. Some spirits have a form anatomically similar to an ordinary flesh body. It is referred to as a "faux body" in BLEACH. This form seems to encompass all of a spirit's being, meaning that there is no distinction between soul and body. Below are some of the enetities found in BLEACH.
Shinigami (Death God)
Shinigami, or Death God (known as Soul Reapers in the English version) in Bleach are beings whose responsibility is basically to escort newly-deceased souls to the afterlife. They are made up of spiritual matter and cannot be seen or detected in any way by normal humans. Their archrivals are the hollows. The shinigami mainly use soul slayers (called Zanpakuto) and demon arts, to fight. If a Captain or Lieutenant-rank shinigami travels to the human world, their power level is set to a limit of 20% of their usual strength. They must ask Soul Society for permission to "lift the limit" to release their full power while in the human world.

Hollow’s purposes are to continue feeding on souls of Pluses and death gods to feed their own hunger for the souls they do not have. Shinigami’s tasks are to send the pluses to soul society by using a soul burial. Their second duty is to kill and purify hollows that interfere with their job or intend to hurt any pluses. All pluses have a severed chain of fate on their chest. They are considered ghosts as no one can see them except ones of spiritual power and Shinigami.

These artificial spirits were created in a form of a pill to be inserted into dead humans, thus giving them a body and were used to fight off hollows. These modified souls are gifted with strength that no normal human would be able to have. But modified souls were to be executed because they were immoral. However a few of them escaped soul society and one of them came into the hands of Ichigo. After nearly losing his body, he found out a modified soul could be put into a stuffed animal and named him Kon. Not too long after his ordeal in Soul Society, he met a group of three who happened to be modified souls with special powers, unlike just superhuman strength and speed like Kon.

Dolls must also be released in order to use them. In their unreleased state they look like a variety of items, Dalk for example looks like a metal sphere in her unreleased state. The dolls may even kill a Bounto who is not powerful enough to contain it.

The bitto are bee-like beings, created by two of the Bounto, that consume living souls and bring them back in the form of an elixir to the Bount. Once the Bount drink the liquid the bitto bring to them, their power increases significantly.

The bitto are bee-like beings, created by two of the Bounto, that consume living souls and bring them back in the form of an elixir to the Bount. Once the Bount drink the liquid the bitto bring to them, their power increases significantly.
