STORY
Two brothers (edward and alphonse elric) study the art of alchemy, an art of science that allows objects to be made from raw materials. They decide to study human transmutation, A forbidden alchemy in which you bring back what is dead, in attempt to bring back their deceased mother. Instead, it ends in complete failure and as a result alphonse loses his body but his brother pleads with what they call ''the gate'' and negotiates that if he can have his brothers soul that the gate may have his own right arm. Edward puts his brothers soul into a large armour suit and in return loses the arm he traded. The plot is that these two brothers must find what is known as the philosophers stone, a very powerful object capable of giving alphonse his body and edward his arm back. while on their journey the brothers soon discover that the world of alchemy is far more corrupted and complicated than what they imagened and are intangled in something that could change the world as they know it.

CHARACTERS

Edward Elric, commonly known as Ed in the series, is the older brother. He started learning alchemy at a very young age but once his mother died He became much more serious in alchemy and wanted to learn how to bring the dead back. He even found a teacher to teach him and his brother the basics of alchemy but dispite his teachers warnings he deicided to try and bring his mother back from the dead. Instead, he lost his brothers body, his right arm and left leg and only succeeded in bringing back a monster that could barely be distinguished as his mother. not long after, a man named roy mustang comes to see the elric brothers and proposes that edward join the military. He excepts and gets a prosthetic metal arm and leg made for him by his close friends winry rockbell and her granmother. After a little time Edward becomes a state alchemist, a rank that has many resorces and will help him and his brother on their way to finding the philosopher stone.
His japanese voice is played by roma park and the english voice is played by vic mignogna.

Alphonse Elric, commonly known as Al and the younger of the two, started alchemy at around the same time his brother did. He hesitated the idea of human transmutation but agreed to do it none the less. When they performed the human transmutation the brothers didnt realize that there must be an equivalent exchange in all forms of alchemy and alphonse was unexpectedly taken by the gate. After his brother bargained with the gate and sacrificed his arm and leg for al's soul, Al was transmutaded into a metal armor suit. When he wakes up, he findshimself in a large suit and his brother bleeding to death. He races his brothers body to their close family friends winry rockbell and her grandmother. They treat him and he is saved. When Roy mustang arrives and proposes Ed joins the mar, Al agrees to come along as well but Ed tells him not join.
Alphonse is voiced by Rie Kugimiya in japanesse. In the english versions he is voiced by Aaron Dismuke in the first version and played by Maxey White in the second version.

Winry Rockbell is the childhood friend of the Elric brothers and is a skilled automail maker. she is also the one that designs Edwards automail for him as well as repairs it. Her parents Were doctors and they died in the ishbal war trying to save the lives of ishbalan people. She lives with her granmother and makes automail for a living. She is very close to the brothers and appears in the series regularly.
In the japanese version she is voiced by Megumi Toyoguchi and her english voice is played by caitlen glass, but in the brotherhood version the japanese voice is played by Megumi Takamoto.

Roy Mustang is the one responsible for Ed becoming a state alchemist when he persuades him to join the state military. His ambition is to become the leader of amestris and he'll do anything to get there. two people in particular make it their responsebility to get him there and their names are riza hawkeye and maes hughes. He can create flames from the flick of his fingers and therefor known as the flame alchemist. He comes off as arrogant and just career minded but his first priority is always the safety of his men.
His japenese voices are Toru Okawa in the first series and Shinichiro Miki in brotherhood. his english voice for both series is Travis Willingham.

Scar( the name derives from the X on his face) comes into the series as a murderer, who targets states alcehmists in particular. His motives are to kill every alchemist or person involved in the ishval war. In the ishval war, State alchemist were ordered to kill off the ishvalans. The ishval war shows the true meaning of massacre through the annialation of nearly the entire ishvalan race and it shows the reason behind scars killing but later on in the show scar finally realizes that the death of more is not going to bring back the deaths of many. He even helps the elric brothers at one point.
He is voiced in japanese by Ryotaro Okaiyu in the first series and voiced by kenta miyake in brotherhood. In english he is voiced by Daemon Clarke in the first series and voiced by J. Michael Tatum in botherhood..

Izumi curtis, the one who trains the brothers in alchemy, agreed only to train them if they could survive on an abandoned island with no help and learn the meaning to the phrase she gives them. When they succeed she trains them in martial arts and alchemy. Through flashbacks, it shows the story of Izumi and why she spits blood so often. A while before she met Ed and Al she Also tried human transmutation. She was pregnant with a child and her and her husband (sig curtis) was happy till the baby is born stillborn and she discovers she will never be able to have another baby. In despair she naively tries to resurect him which result in the loss of many of her organs. Though she is very hard on the brothers, it is obvious that she looks at them as they were her sons and she helps them in any way she can through the show.
She is voiced by shoko tsuda in japanese and voiced by christine auten in the english version.

The other series is alot more focused on Ed and Al than brotherhood, and I'd say you can get more out of it emotionally. It worth watching for its own reasons separate from FMAB really.

yeah the other version is worth watching you cry and be sad it conects to the heart but its kinda disapointing the last episode if you dont want the like wtf happend then watch the movie too when you finished the episodes

Well, Edward or Alphonse are quite normal & reasonable names. Your husband should be glad you arent planning naming the baby "Grimmjow", "Beel", "Lambo" or any other (rare, unique) anime character name.

Kinda sad. There is a possibility I may be pregnant. My husband said I ca't name the littel guy Edward if it is a boy. He said "No anime character names" My defense was "But.. My Little Ed!!"
