Fushigi Yūgi is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yuu Watase and originally serialized in Shōjo Comic from May 1992 through June 1996. The manga series was given an English language release in North America by Viz Media, starting in 1999. Spanning eighteen volumes, Fushigi Yūgi tells the story of two ordinary teenager girls, Miaka and Yui, who are pulled into "The Universe of the Four Gods", a mysterious book they found in the library. Within the book, they find themselves in ancient China. Fulfilling ancient prophecies, the two are chosen to be the priestesses of Suzaku and Seiryū, respectively, two of four Guardian Gods worshiped in the book's world. Once best friends, the girls become bitter enemies as Miaka strives to use the powers of Suzaku, God of the south, to make her dreams come true, but Yui, believing Miaka betrayed her, seeks to use the powers of Seiryū to get revenge. Along the way, the two girls are joined by their seven celestial warriors, and find themselves learning the true meaning of love, friendship, and sacrifice.

Miaka Yuki

Miaka Yūki is the primary protagonist in the manga and anime series Fushigi Yūgi. She is an ordinary high school girl with a tremendous appetite and is generous and cares greatly for others. She became the priestess of Suzaku, or the Suzaku-no-Miko so that she could get into the High school of her choice. She admittedly is not the brightest crayon in the box, despite studying extensively for her high school entrance exams and going to juku (cram school) for hours on end. Her goal is to pass the entrance exam for Junon High School to please her mother and be with her best friend Yui (an admitted genius), though she really wants to attend Yotsubadai High School with her friends. She is the priestess of Suzaku.


Tamahome

Tamahome is a character is the anime and manga series Fushigi Yūgi. First portrayed as greedy and only seems to want to help out when he is paid, later on in the series it is revealed that he only acts greedy for a special cause. He is tough on the inside, but also very shy. He fell in love with Miaka after she confessed her love to him and was struck ill. He sacrifices himself for the sake of others, and won't back down against an enemy. He is in love with Miaka. Their love transcends worlds. He cares for all the Suzaku-seishi and is deeply wounded when some of them die. In the OVA Season 1 3rd episode, he is reborn in Miaka's world as Taka.


Hotohori

Hotohori is a character in the manga and anime series Fushigi Yūgi. The beautiful narcissistic fourth Emperor of Konan. When he first heard about the Suzaku-no-Miko at a young age, he thought the priestess would be the one for him and love him for himself, instead of his title. Eventually, when he met Miaka Yuki, he loved her deeply and would do anything for her. Thus, he became Tamahome's rival, but stepped aside when he realized Miaka only had eyes for Tamahome. He eventually marries a woman named Houki, who bears a striking resemblance to Nuriko. He is killed by Nakago during the battle between Konan and Kutou, leaving Houki pregnant with his son Boushin.


Nuriko

Nuriko is a character in the manga and anime series Fushigi Yūgi. Nuriko first appears disguised as "Kourin" in Emperor Hotohori's harem (which Hotohori never goes to unless to welcome new maidens). "Kourin" was in fact Nuriko's younger sister who died at a young age; he began behaving and dressing like her to keep her memory alive. Nuriko is the only consistently crossdressing, physically strong warrior in the series and is very infatuated with his fellow warrior, Hotohori. In addition to that, it is later revealed that he also loves Miaka Yuki (and according to creator Yuu Watase, Nuriko is bisexual), though the exact nature of this love is never revealed due to his death shortly after admitting his love for her. However, within Hotohori's character novel consists a letter written by Nuriko to Houki. It was written just before his death and in it he says he's fallen in love with someone special (Miaka). Nuriko is the first Suzaku-seishi to die in the story. He was killed during a fight with Seiryū-seishi Ashitare. Near the end of his life he dresses as a man so he can properly protect Miaka. Nuriko is often the second choice when it comes to 'Favorite Seishi', slightly behind Tasuki and closely followed by Chichiri.


Chichiri

Chichiri is a Suzaku celestial warrior in Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yūgi. He is a wandering monk who has trained for several years with Taijitsu-kun, the creator. When he first appears, he appears to be always smiling, but this is later explained as a magical mask whose features he can move by reflex, making it resemble a natural face. Underneath, most of his face does not look so different from the mask, but one of his eyes is scarred by an old injury across his forehead.Chichiri is the oldest and wisest of all of the Suzaku warriors and thus thinks of himself as the older brother who looks after them all. He habitually ends many sentences with the emphatic phrase "no da", translated as "ya know" in the anime's English version (mainly the subtitles, as the English dub of the anime tends to omit this quirk). At the end of the series, he and Tasuki are the only Suzaku seishi still alive in The Universe of the Four Gods.


Tasuki

Tasuki is a character from the popular shōjo manga and anime series Fushigi Yūgi. He at first is seen as frank, loud, and a potty mouth (and he usually is). He claims to hate all females (This is due to his family - five older sisters, alpha-male mother, and wimp father). He is a pyromaniac leader of the Mount Reikaku bandits. He is one of the main sources of comic relief but can be the most sentimental, which somehow, contradicts his personality. Beneath that rebellious, tough, bandit exterior, his sensitivity rests. He is also extremely quick and agile. He loves to joke around and just act like a goof-ball, especially with Nuriko and Tamahome, then later Chichiri. His preferred weapon is a metal harisen (fan) that can emit flames when he cries out "Rekka Shin'en" (or "Lekka Shien," depending on the translation). At the end of the series, he and Chichiri are the only (living) Suzaku seishi remaining in the Universe of the Four Gods.


Mitsukake

Mitsukake is a character in the manga and anime series Fushigi Yūgi. The healer of Suzaku's warriors. He is soft-spoken and one of the most serious of the Suzaku Seven. The son of a country doctor, he put his natural talents to work and often would help his father with his rounds. However after the death of Shōka, the daughter of the local nobleman and with whom he was in love, Mitsukake gave up medicine and devoted all of his time and energy into finding a miracle herb that could cure any illness. It was during this reclusive stage that Miaka and the others found him, and with a little persuasion managed to get him to join them. During the battle between Kōnan and Kutō, he is severely wounded by Nakago protecting Tasuki and Chichiri, and later gives up all his strength to heal a baby. His cat Tama is the unofficial mascot of the Suzaku Seven, and after Mitsukake's death, becomes Chichiri's pet.


Chiriko

Chiriko is a character in the manga and anime series Fushigi Yūgi. Chiriko is the youngest and the genius among the seven seishi. He is an extremely intelligent child who becomes attached to Tasuki, and likewise Tasuki becomes attached to him. When he first appears, it is revealed he was studying to take an exam to take a seat in the government. He and Chichiri are the two technical minds of the team, but Chiriko is ruled by his character: when it is not on his body, he is a rather average child with limited intelligence, which is a source of frustration for him. The youngest and weakest member of the group, it is unusual that he would gravitate towards someone like Tasuki; however, the reasoning behind it is that Tasuki always wanted a younger brother and is more than happy to fill the roll for Chiriko. His body was taken over by Seiryū Seishi Miboshi, but after regaining control, he stabs himself, taking Miboshi with him to his death.


Yui Hongo

Yui Hongo is the Priestess of Seiryuu from Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yūgi. A very intelligent girl, she is protagonist Miaka Yuki's best friend in the real world. Yui becomes trapped in the book universe while trying to help Miaka to return to the real world, and is subsequently caught and believed to be raped by bandits. Distraught, she tries to slit her wrists, but is found by Nakago and who brings her to Kutou. It should be noted that Yui was not in fact raped, but led to believe she was raped by Nakago. Nakago rescued her shortly after she was knocked out by the bandits and let her come to her own conclusions after she regained consciousness. Not realizing that her "rape" was orchestrated by Nakago, Yui begins to blame Miaka for what happened to her and turns against her former best friend, becoming the Priestess of Seiryū (Seiryū no Miko), swearing to fight against Miaka and to take her lover, Tamahome, from her in a desperate act of vengeance and lust. She is the priestess of Seiryu.


Nakago

Nakago is a character in the manga and anime series Fushigi Yūgi created by Yuu Watase. Considered to be the ringleader of all the Seiryu warriors and the main antagonist in the tv series, his cold demeanor and presence are often the drive behind Yui's decisions during the early story stages. He is also the blonde haired, blue eyed shogun of Kutō, the eastern country and enemy of Kōnan. All of the Seiryū fear him. His life force is superior to all of the Suzaku warriors combined. When he was younger, he accidentally killed his mother and her assaulter, due to uncontrollable powers. The Emperor of Kutō learned that he was one of the Seiryū's seishi, hence he became the Kutō's general. The mark on his forehead means 'Heart,' which is ironic because he is the only warrior who hates everyone (except for Soi). He arrives at the Real World, attempting to take it over, but is killed by Tamahome when Miaka Yuki finally seals away Seiryu.


Amiboshi

Amiboshi is a Seiryū-seishi ("star-person", or celestial warrior) from Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yūgi. He's the elder twin brother of Suboshi as well. He first appeared impersonating the Suzaku-seishi Chiriko under orders from Nakago. After being discovered, he falls into a river and is believed to be dead. He is found by an old couple and pretends that he has amnesia. The couple adopt him as a son and call him Kaika. He saves Miaka while she is searching for the Shinzahō, but he pretends that he does not recognize her. He is the only surviving Seiryū-seishi at the end of the story. His younger brother gave him a forgetfulness potion after he nearly died. He lost his memory forever, which protected him from the fate of the rest of the Seiryū-seishi.


Suboshi

Suboshi is a Seiryū celestial warrior from Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yūgi. He is the younger twin brother of Amiboshi. He fell in love with Priestess of Seiryū, Hongo Yui after she comforted him due to the apparent death of his beloved elder brother. He thus despises Miaka Yuki whom he believes abandoned Yui, and Tamahome whom he believes is the one responsible for Amiboshi's death. With this belief, Suboshi murders Tamahome's father and younger siblings for vengeance. He later arrives in the real world trying to kill Miaka and Tamahome, but is killed by his own weapon, vanishing shortly afterwards.


Soi

Soi is a Seiryū celestial warrior from Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yūgi. She was rescued by Nakago when she was a child and afterwards developed a crush on him. Despite being enemies with Suzaku, she actually shows sympathy towards Miaka Yuki and Tamahome. She is killed by Tasuki in a battle between Kōnan and Kutō in an attempt to save Nakago; she puts herself between Nakago and Tasuki's sword. Nakago then carries her dead body until he passes from the world of the book into the Real World. She is seen again by Nakago in "paradise," alongside his mother when he dies.


Ashitare

Ashitare is a character in the manga and anime series Fushigi Yūgi created by Yuu Watase. Ashitare is a werewolf from Hokkan whom Nakago found in a circus tent. He was killed by Nakago after a battle between Ashitare and Nuriko resulted in Nuriko's death and Ashitare's broken neck and transformative near death experience. Nakago explains in the manga that Ashitare's human side was killed by Nuriko, but that his beast side took over and successfully stole the Shinzaho of the Genbu priestess, and delivered it to him.


Tomo

Tomo is an illusionist among the seven seishi of Seiryū in Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yugi. In the manga he is in love with Nakago, but the anime does not show this very clearly. He tries to trap Miaka Yuki in an illusion world but it is later broken by Amiboshi. As he tries to kill Amiboshi, he is killed by Suboshi who appears to rescue his brother.


Miboshi

Miboshi is the last of the Seiryū-senshi to appear. While he looks like a young boy, he is actually a lot older that any of the other Seiryū-senshi. Later, he took over Chiriko's body, but after regaining control, Chiriko stabs himself, taking both of them to their deaths.


Takiko Okuda

Takiko Okuda is the heroine Priestess of Genbu from Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yugi Genbu Kaiden. Daughter of Einosuke Okuda, the Japanese translator of the original scripture "The Universe of the Four Gods". Takiko is a very serious character with a particular hatred of octopus and thunder. She is believed to be a stuck up by her classmates due to her naginata skills, of which she pays them no heed. She can be insecure at times. Takiko was originally reluctant to become the Genbu no Miko because she doubted if she was really capable of doing so. However, when Takiko witnessed Tomite's mother getting hurt in protecting her, she decided to become the Priestess in order to protect Hokkan. She is the priestess of Genbu.


Uruki

Uruki is a Genbu celestial warrior from Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yūgi Genbu Kaiden. He is the crown prince of the Hokkan (Bei-Jia) empire and second in line to the throne, but he has been on the run from assassins all his life.His father is King Temdan Rowun (テムダン・ロウン王 Temudan Roun Ou), at the time of Uruki's birth, was the emperor of Hokkan. However, a prophecy made at the crown prince's birth foretold Temdan that his son would be the one to end his life. In fear for his own life, he ordered his son's immediate execution to which Uruki's mother opposed. She gave her infant son to the family who had served hers for many years with unmatchable loyalty; a man named Tauru and his twelve year old son, Soruen.


Tomite

Tomite is a Genbu celestial warrior from Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yūgi Genbu Kaiden. He also makes an appearance along with Hikitsu in the original Fushigi Yūgi.In Fushigi Yūgi Genbu Kaiden, he first appears wanting to kill Rimudo because he heard that Rimudo had killed 1000 people. When he first meets Rimudo and Takiko, he thinks that Takiko and Rimudo are lovers and therefore kidnaps Takiko in order to make Rimudo come to rescue her. After that debacle is settled, Tomite becomes jealous of Uruki, not only because he has a slight crush on Takiko, but also because he thought he wasn't as powerful as Uruki. He gets angry at himself because he promised himself that he'll get stronger for his father but during fights with Shigi and Hien, it's Uruki who ends up saving the day. He felt useless initially, but Takiko tells him that it was reassuring to have him by her side and that he was important as well. After killing the Mou that killed his father, Hikitsu tells him that he is "more than strong enough" and he stops doubting his strength.


Hatsui

Hatsui is a Genbu celestial warrior from Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yūgi Genbu Kaiden. He is a timid and chubby youngster of twelve. His parents died when he was nine and Hatsui had to face bullies on his own. Due to the abuse, he accidentally unleashed his celestial power for the first time and ended up killing many people. It was to defend himself, he had never meant to harm anyone, so he ran away from his village and secluded himself in the mountains. Sometime later, a woman named Fen discovered him there and befriended him. However, when Takiko and Tomite arrive to search for Hatsui, it is revealed that Fen is an assassin with a mission to kill the Genbu celestial warriors; meaning she never really cared for Hatsui.


Namame

Namame is a Genbu celestial warrior from Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yūgi Genbu Kaiden. He is a small doll made of rock that resembles the kodama from Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke.Though it's hard for a being of rock to have any concrete personality, Namame is very perceptive of the feelings of others. Like a child, he's very sensitive to the treatment of others and quick to lose his temper should something upset him. The death of his first friend, the Oracle Anruu, triggered such a violent outburst, that his giant rock form had to be completely destroyed by Hagus just to get him to calm down. Though unable to cry physically, he does later mourn the death of Anruu taking Takiko's tears as his own as they drip onto his head.


Hikitsu

Hikitsu is a Genbu celestial warrior from Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yūgi Genbu Kaiden. He also makes an appearance along with Tomite in the original Fushigi Yūgi.Hikitsu is very withdrawn, almost to the point of being cold, to everyone apart from his sister Ayla and his best friend Tomite. He did not, at first, want to be part of the Miko's group as he was guarding his frozen little sister, but after their reunion and a persuasive speech from Tomite, he agrees. He proves to be an invaluable friend and companion over the course of the series.


Inami

Inami is a Genbu celestial warrior from Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yūgi Genbu Kaiden. She was found in the country of Konan (Hong-Nan) working as a brothel madam.Brought up in the imperial harem for the Rowun clan, Inami knows her fair share about what's happening in her native country of Hokkan. 11 years ago before the main story line, her existence as a Genbu Seishi surfaced and she fled in fear for her life and the life of her unborn child. Though she escaped her attackers, she was wounded and left to freeze to death with her stomach bleeding in the streets of Touran.


Urumiya

Urumiya is Genbu celestial warrior from Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yūgi Genbu Kaiden. Urumiya, introduced by his birthname of Hagus, is the last of the Genbu Celestial Warriors to be unveiled. In his first confrontation with Takiko and the other warriors, it's noted by Soruen and later noticed by Takiko that something is wrong with his eyes. After the incident with Namame at the Turning Point Rock field, Soruen suggests that he's almost blind and that could be used to their advantage. The actual condition of Hagus' eyes has yet to play any key point in the story but it serves as a good reminder that his eyes, metaphorically, are clouded by his own emotions.


Suzuno Osugi

Suzuno Osugi is the Priestess of Byakko from Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yūgi. She is the daughter of Takao Ōsugi, the long-time crush of Takiko Okuda, the Priestess of Genbu. After Takiko's death, Suzuno's father was entrusted with the book The Universe of the Four Gods. He was the friend and associate of Einosuke Okuda, translator of The Universe of the Four Gods and father of Takiko Okuda, Priestess of Genbu.


Tatara

Tatara is a Byakko celestial warrior from Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yūgi.Deeply devoted to and in love with the Priestess of Byakko, he faithfully guards the Shinzaho she left behind. Usually remaining in Byakko Temple, he is taken from it by Nakago. Outside of the Temple, his interior begins to age rapidly as the barrier at Byakko Temple in tandem with Subaru's spell was keeping him young. He takes it upon himself to look after Miaka when she is captured by Nakago and becomes mute under the influence of Miboshi's spell, and is the one to inform her that the wish of staying with the Suzaku Seishi Tamahome was the one wish that the gods [Suzaku, Genbu, Byakko and Seiryu] would not grant.


Tokaki

Tokaki is a Byakko celestial warrior from Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yugi. Married to the beautiful and kind Subaru, another Byakko Celestial Warrior, he traveled around the four cardinal realms after Subaru threw him out of the house due to his wandering eye. While traveling in Konan, he came across a young Tamahome. Realizing that the bullied child was a Celestial Warrior, he trained Tamahome in martial arts so that he could one day protect his priestess. The pair are reunited when the Suzaku Warriors travel to Sairō to find Byakko's Shinzaho, however it is not a happy reunion. Tokaki knew from experience from being a Celestial Warrior himself that a priestess cannot wish to be with one of her Celestial Warriors because after the priestess fulfills her duty in the book, she must return to her world.


Subaru

Subaru is a Byakko celestial warrior in Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yugi. She is married to the flirtacious Byakko seishi, Tokaki for reasons no one can figure out.Sweet and nurturing, Subaru tends to the exhausted Suzaku Warriors that descend upon her home. Though she is often exasperated by Tokaki's roving eye, she does love her husband. Unlike Tokaki, she feels that Miaka and Tamahome should enjoy what happiness they have, though she does agree with telling the pair that they could never have a happy ending.

Kokie is a Byakko celestial warrior in Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yugi. His character is Stomach and his constellation is Aries.

Amefuri

Suzaku

The Vermilion Bird/Suzaku is one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations. According to Wu Xing, the Taoist five-elemental system, it represents the fire-elemental, the direction of south, and the season summer correspondingly. Thus it is sometimes called the Vermilion Bird of the South (南方朱雀, Nán Fāng Zhū Què). It is often mistaken for Fenghuang, but they are two different creatures. Fenghuang is the king of birds, while the Vermilion Bird is a mythological spirit creature of the Chinese constellations. His priestess is Miaka Yuki.


Seiryu

The Azure Dragon/Seiryu is one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations. It is sometimes called the Azure Dragon of the East (traditional Chinese: 東方青龍; simplified Chinese: 东方青龙; pinyin: Dōng Fāng Qīng Lóng), and it represents the east and the spring season. It should not be confused with the mythological yellow dragon that is associated with the Emperor of China. His priestess is Yui Hongo.


Genbu

The Black Tortoise is one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations. The word for "tortoise" was taboo; and the entire entity is not just the tortoise itself, but both the tortoise and the snake. It is sometimes called the Black Warrior of the North (北方玄武, Běi Fāng Xuán Wǔ), and it represents the north and the winter season. Although its name in Chinese, Xuánwǔ, is often translated as Black Tortoise in English, it is usually depicted as both a tortoise and a snake, specifically with the snake coiling around the tortoise. His priestess is Takiko Okuda.
