Gekkostate: “What is GEKKOSTATE?”
Gekkostate is a group of renegade anti-government ex-special-forces soldiers from the anime
Psalms of Planets Eureka seveN (交響詩篇エウレカセブン) by Bones Studio, and distributed by Bandai Entertainment (and its affiliates). Not all members of Gekkostate are ex-military, but the military identifies Holland Novak (the leader), Talho Yuki, Matthieu, Ken-Goh, Hap, Stoner, Hilda, Mischa, and Woz on their wanted posters. Other members of Gekkostate include: Renton Thurston, Eureka, Gonzy, Jobs, Gidget, Moondoggie, and the kids (Maurice, Maeter, and Linck). But deep within Gekkostate is the dark and not so glamorous truth of their past and their cause. For them it was not always about “lifting” (or “reffing” according to some fansubs and official translations in some countries), a popular sport equivalent to surfing but uses boards called “reflection boards” to ride Transparence Light Particles (Trapar for short) emitted from Scub Coral, but fighting for a side not depicted in the glossy pages of their illegal counterculture magazine ray=out...
A little note: Watch the anime if you’re confused about the background of Gekkostate, I’m not spilling any spoilers on the main page here.
ray=out:
At the heart of their public fame and immortalization is the illegal counterculture magazine “ray=out.” Through ray=out, Gekkostate was able to exploit government secrets, denouncing the crimes of the military to the public, and documenting the day to day surfer styled life of Gekkostate. But the magazine spoke more than just life and reality; it was a means of opening eyes, an idea we want to accomplish through this group…
The Point:
Though this is a group formed from inspiration from an anime, our main priority is not necessarily to become the typical “fan-group,” but to open people’s eyes. Using the same elements as Gekkostate did in the world of
Eureka seveN, we want to make a counterculture society, right here in Crunchy Roll; a group of individuals who will spread philosophic thought, think beyond the confines of society, challenge and question your surroundings, and express yourself through the articles of ray=out. In this world, we do the things we do in order to escape: from watching anime, to listening to music, all to escape reality even for a brief moment, an escape (when you think about it) that is greater than any hallucinogen (that’s a scary truth; you can challenge that statement in the forum if you really want to). It’s not that you need to be some enlightened philosopher or sociologist, or anthropologist; but instead understand the world you live in, not look at from one point of view, but learn to look through different lenses, and ask why things happening, the meaning of things, and what you can do to change society. If you think you can just stay at the quagmire (an area of miry or boggy ground whose surface yields under the tread; a bog) of society where you feel its safe and watch things from the sidelines, you’re wrong. You’re going to get thrown in the middle of it all, and it’s going to be you that decides societies views. We can only take so much out of an anime (besides entertainment); this isn’t a world where we can ride mechs or surf the skies, but there are things we can take from
Eureka seveN (or any anime for that matter) that applies to the real world, and that is to stand up and see what’s going on. Will you follow the herd of society? Or will you stop, look, and question the direction of society? The unexamined life is not worth living. What is important is not so much what we do, but who we are; not the outside person, but the inside person. Do not be shaped by culture, break the mold, and be the one who shapes it…
