Gensomaden Saiyuki commonly known as Saiyuki, is a popular anime series created by Kazuya Minekura. The story is loosely based on the famous Chinese novel Journey to the West.

The Merciful Goddess/Kanzeon Bosatsu



A goddess (bodhisattva in Buddhism) representing compassion. She is also known as Merciful Goddess (in the dubbed version of the anime). She was the aunt of Sanzo's previous incarnation, Konzen, and so she takes a special interest in Sanzo's journey to India. It was her that ordered Sanzo to travel with the other 3. In various Buddhist sects, Kanzeon Bosatsu appears as a man or a woman, which explains why the Kanzeon in Saiyuki is a hermaphrodite. Kanzeon Bosatsu is a pretty funny character and she is used as a way to explain some things or allude to things in Gensomaden Saiyuki. She acts as a distant observer, and very rarely makes contact w/ the main characters. In Saiyuki Gaiden, however, she has a much more active role.

Kougaiji



The son of Gyumaoh and Rasetsunyo. He works for Gyokumen Koushu because she has promised to release his mother if he follows her orders. His younger half-sister is Lirin. He is a very dark, solemn young man, with a great sense of responsibility and charisma that inspires loyalty from those that serve him. He has the use of magic, with which he can summon fire and creatures from the demon plane.

Lirin



The daughter of Gyumaoh and Gyokumen Koushu, and the younger half-sister of Kougaiji. She is basically the female version of Goku, and occasionally hangs out with the Sanzo party, despite the fact they're supposed to be at odds. She adores her older brother and knows that her own mother does not love her. She is very bouncy and childlike but can turn out to be a worthy opponent. the last thing you want to do is under estmate her power.

Yaone



Kougaiji saved her from becoming a concubine to the dreaded Hyakugan Maoh. He takes her into his service as an apothecary. Her potent arsenal of weapons includes medicinal drugs and bombs. Yaone is usually the one who is stuck with the job of taking Lirin. Although Lirin often manages to run away from her.

Dokugakuji



Gojyo's older half-brother, he is a full demon. When he was still quite young, Dokugakuji killed his own mother (Gojyo's step-mother) in order to protect Gojyo. He now works for Kougaji, who took him in without knowing anything about his past. He is fiercely loyal to Kougaji, which leads him to fight with his own brother on numerous occasions. His weapon is a sword.
