A young boy who wishes to become a hunter to find his father, the legendary hunter Ging Freecss. Ging had left Gon in his aunt's care since birth. Gon is a headstrong optimistic youth with extraordinary senses of smell and hearing, sharp instincts, and an innate understanding for animals.
Gon starts with an unusual choice of weaponry - a fishing rod. After learning nen, he switches to relying on his Hatsu ability, the Jajanken.
Born to the Zaoldyeck family of assassins, Killua is considered the genius of his generation. He is named as the heir to his family due to his amazing talent, and has been trained and raised since birth to take over the Zaoldyeck family business of assassination and is already a professional assassin even at his young age.
Killua joined the Hunter exam after running away from home, and by chance meets and befriends Gon. He is a very agile and strong fighter with just his bare hands, carrying his family's characteristic immunity to poisons and electricity. He later bases his transformation type Hatsu ability on electricity. His original killing ability was to 'adjust' his hand therefore sharpening his nails. This allows him to slice up his opponents and/or pluck out vital organs. He also knows a technique called the 'rhythm echo', which creates a series of after images of him through a varying cadence of steps. Later, he learns to fight with a yo-yo and electric shocks.
The last living member of the Kuruta clan, Kurapika has made it his life goal to hunt down and destroy the group responsible for his tribe's destruction - the Genei Ryodan (also known as the Phantom Troupe). His tribe was renowned for their eyes - which would turn flaming scarlet in times of anger or emotional agitation. The so-called 'scarlet eyes' (also known as Kuruta eyeballs) were considered a priceless treasure among body-part collectors, which is what prompted the Genei Ryodan to destroy them.
Kurapika enters the Hunters Exam because he believes becoming a Blacklist Hunter will give him the necessary resources to fight the Genei Ryodan. Kurapika is in general calm and level-headed, preferring to think before leaping into battles. He is also a strong fighter - a huge boost in strength and agility being a side effect of his tribe's scarlet eyes. After being taught nen, Kurapika develops the ability to use two nen types - his usual materialization type, and a specialization type that comes into effect only when his eyes turn scarlet. The specialization type allows him to use the other five nen types all at 100% efficiency. He takes advantage of this fact while fighting against the Genei Ryodan by tricking them into thinking they are fighting a nen user whose only ability is either manipulating or materializing chains. He doesn't want anyone to know he was from the clan so he wears black contacts.
Leorio claimed that he joined the Hunter exam solely for money. Later, he reveals that it is because he wishes to become a doctor, and needs the money to pay for school fees. He had once lost a very close friend (Pietro) to a debilitating illness only because he had lacked the money to pay for a cure, and now aspires to become a doctor who is able to cure the poor without needing to charge.
He is not so much of an experienced or talented fighter like most of the other Hunter Examinees, but is by no means weak. He is actually revealed to be physically stronger than Gon or Kurapika. He too, came to learn of nen after passing the Hunter exam. However, he has (at current) chosen to put aside his nen training so he can fulfill his goal of becoming a doctor. Before showing Gon and Killua his Nen he thought that all there was to nen was "ten," one of its four aspects; however, he was corrected by Gon and Killua.
Hiding under the guise of a clown-faced magician, not much is known about him or his past. During the Hunter exams Hisoka decided to take on the role of assistant examiner and commenced to kill anybody whom he thought did not meet his standards as a hunter. During this event Hisoka met Gon and became interested with him after realizing the potential Gon had to become a great hunter due to his his courage to face him despite great odds solely to protect his friends. He believed he was a hunter he would see grow to his prime, then destroy. Due to knowledge of nen being so limited, Hisoka takes advantage of this and uses nen freely, claiming it to be magic. This would make him more of an illusionist than someone who actually has magical powers. Despite dressing up as a clown claiming to be a magician, he is an extremely skilled and dangerous fighter.
Kuroro Lucifer is a calm, handsome young man, coming across as intelligent and charismatic. He seems to be a born leader, able to hold the Genei Ryodan together despite the volatile personalities that make up the group, and well versed in strategies.
During his time in Yorkshin City, he uses his calm presence and communication abilities to assume another personality in order to gain Neon Nostrade's trust.
The only people Kuroro seems to care about are his fellow Genei Ryodan. When Kuroro reads Neon's prophecy which contained Ubogin's death, he cries for them. Later on he orchestrates a massacre of Mafia members as a requiem to his fallen comrade. Besides that, he shows no fear of his own death, even anticipating it. Another Hunter, Senritsu, states that, his heartbeat sounded as if he was living with death, and apparently appears sadistically happy with it. To Kuroro, the Genei Ryodan are more important than his own life. He stresses that the importance of a leader only extends to following his commands, but the group should always be placed first, before the leader's life
Kuroro is a quick thinker and very able-bodied. His ability to fend off the attacks of the two most powerful members of the Zaoldyeck family of assassins at once is proof of his fighting skill and strength. Zeno states that he would defeat Kuroro in a one-versus-one fight, but remarks that it would be a different matter if Kuroro were truly trying to kill him, instead of trying to steal his abilities. His vast book of abilities also gives him great insight into the abilities of others in combat and strategy (such as when he deduced Kurapika having the ability to impose rules on others with his Judgment Chain). Kuroro's Nen Ability is called "Skill Hunter". It allows him to steal the Nen Abilities of other people to use them as his own using a book known as the "Bandit's Secret." The theft victim, of course, no longer has access to his ability. The theft happens under strict conditions:
1. He must witness the nen ability in action
2. He must ask the the ability and be answered
3. His victim's hand must touch the cover of Bandit's Secret
4. All of the above must be done within an hour
To use one of the stolen abilities, he first materializes Bandit's Secret and turns to the page of the wanted ability. While using an ability, the book must remain opened. Additionally, an ability vanishes from the book when its former user dies.
Bonorenofu is member number 13. He dresses partially in rags and looks like a mummy. During the York Shin arc, his appearance was insignificant. During the Chimera Ant arc, he was seen fighting with the rest of the Genei Ryodan against the Chimera ants. Very little is known about his personality and reasons for joining the Ryodan, but in the fight with the Chimera ants he displays a mocking and confident attitude. His physical power ranks 8th among the Ryodan.
Background: Bonorenofu originates from the Gyudondondo tribe, and is one of the Genei Ryodan who did not originate from Ryūseigai. He dresses in bandages, which cover up a mass number of holes throughout his body. Nen Ability: Batte Le Cantabile He plays music through the holes on his skin during battle, with different songs creating different nen effects, such as transformation of his own body or the materialization of objects. He is from the Gyudondondo tribe, and when the boys from this tribe are 3 years old, needles are poked into their body. These needles are slowly replaced with bigger needles, and eventually sticks, until holes in the skin are created. The people of this tribe are called "dancing warriors", perhaps ascribing to the different sounds that are created depending on the holes.
We have seen two different phases to his nen: The prologue and the Jupiter. The Prologue phase allows him to materialize a warrior to attack for him. The Jupiter phase allows him to materialize a giant boulder and crush his enemies.
A mysterious member of the Genei Ryodan, Feitan is attired in what one would expect from a bandit-- dark clothes with a skullhead scarf that covers his mouth. Feitan seldom speaks, but when he does, usually there's a word missing. Feitan's first language most likely isn't Japanese, but he has shown to be rather proficient in the Chinese language. He is one of the original members hailing from Ryūseigai. After Feitan's victory over Zazan in Ryūseigai, he has been granted temporary control over the Genei Ryodan.
Feitan is an assassin down to his core, and is quite skilled at his profession. His movement is incredibly fast; Feitan is able to leave afterimages of his body due to his rapid steps. He wields an umbrella that conceals both a sword and a gun that can fire the metal tip for a surprise attack. His physical power is the 5th strongest in the Ryodan. Nen Abilities - Pain Packer: Pain Packer allows Feitan first to use his aura to materialize a protective armor. Then, all of the damage that he has received in battle is converted into scorching heat (named "Rising Sun") and is emitted into the air. The emitted nen transforms into a miniature sun that burns the victim to death. Rising Sun has a very large attack radius, and while Feitan is within his armor he will not be harmed by the fire.
A hulking, Frankensteinian monster is what Franklin (Furankurin?) appears to be, complete with scars and sewn-up wounds that ravage his face. It does seem though, that beneath his harsh exterior lies a small, caring spot in his character, as Franklin acts as a care-giver to Shizuku, and shows concern of her well-being. He is also composed and respectful, normally breaking up arguments and fights within the organization. He is one of the Genei Ryodan that originated from Ryūseigai and ranks 4th in physical power. Nen Ability - Double Machine Gun: Franklin is a human machine gun, as his fingers cap off to reveal chambers where he channels his nen that shoot out as bullets. His fingers weren't required to be cut off and used as caps in order to achieve this, but Franklin did so because he felt it would be more effective. Doing this actually did greatly enhance the force of his Nen Bullets, due to the commitment he showed in doing so.This power has been shown to wipe out a room full of people within seconds.
The most distinctive thing about Korutopi is his haggard appearance. A thick and messy mane of hair flops down his face, obscuring everything except for an occasional glimpse of his eyeball. He is the weakest in the Ryodan in physical power. Nen Ability: Gallery Fake - "Divine Left Hand, Demonic Right Hand"
When Korutopi touches an object with his left hand, his nen ability allows him to make an exact replica of that object with his right hand. He cannot replicate living things except as inanimate objects, and Korutopi is also unable to replicate another user's nen. The replicas that he creates vanish after 24 hours, regardless of their size. However, before their disappearance, Korutopi is able to track the movements of any copied object if he can touch the original.
Not known to show much emotion, Machi seems to be one of the most cold members of the Genei Ryodan. Hisoka seems to have an occasional interest with her, although it's hard to see whether it's genuine, given Hisoka's unpredictability. Machi also doesn't appear to be interested a single bit, spurning his advances on all occasions. She is incredibly loyal to Kuroro, this is proven when she threatened to hunt down and kill Hisoka if he managed to kill Kuroro in a fight. Machi is one of the original Genei Ryodan from the Ryūseigai. Physically she is the strongest woman in the Ryodan, and 6th overall. Nen Ability: Machi's nen transforms into thin wispy-long threads in which she uses in a variety of ways, including seaming together old wounds to heal them, repairing back dislodged limbs (like what she did for Hisoka), and forming a noose that can strangle enemies with a tug. Her thread's strength is inversely proportional to the length. The longer the thread she makes, the easier it is to break.
Like one of the ronin warriors in Edo period Japan, Nobunaga comes complete with a long Japanese sword that he uses with great finesse and skill. Nobunaga's speciality is the unparalleled use of the sword in executing enemies. His best friend is Ubogin, and the two bring out the best in each other during combat. Seeing some of Ubogin's personality in Gon, he expressed interest in having Gon join the Ryodan, though Gon adamantly refused. He is one of the Genei Ryodan that originated from Ryūseigai and ranks 9th in physical power. Nobunaga's En: Supplementing his swordfighting skills is the use of En in creating a circular boundary that can detect the slightest of movements of his opponents. Once the opponent steps into this boundary, an immediate retaliation can be expected from Nobunaga.
A sophisticated woman with revealing attire, Pakunoda exudes an air of self-confidence that can be intimidating to others. Pakunoda is fully loyal to Kuroro, and even goes against the Genei Ryodan in order to help him. She is killed by Kurapika's Judgement Chain in the climax of the Genei Ryodan arc when she uses her memory bullets to tell the others about what happened to Kuroro. Pakunoda is one of the original Genei Ryodan from Ryūseigai (Meteor City/City of the Shooting Star). Her physical strength is 11th in the Ryodan. Nen Ability - Memory Bomb: (「記憶弾」Recollection Bullet)Pakunoda is able to read the thoughts of any person she is in physical contact with by asking them a question. Attempting to create false memories is impossible, since Pakunoda can only extract the most pure memories. The information she collects is highly useful in exposing weaknesses and secrets, especially in finding out the opponent's nen ability or in situations requiring some form of extortion or blackmail. Pakunoda's ability can also be used to see the recent past of an object.
Pakunoda has the ability to share her memories by shooting them into another person's head using a revolver and materialized Nen Bullets. This is not a combat ability, and does no damage. However if she shoots someone with a memory of their own, it is erased indefinitely.
Phinx (Finkusu?) is a genius when it comes to unarmed combat. Phinx uses his hands in battle, which have been shown to be extremely powerful (2nd strongest physically in the Ryodan). He is rather brash and have a tendency to get into conflicts with other people. Phinx is one of the Genei Ryodan that originated from Ryūseigai. He first appears in Egyptian Suit but later changed into jogging suit. He seems to get along with Feitan. Nen Ability - Ripper Cyclotron: Phinx's nen ability involves how many times he rotates his arm. The more rotations that he does with the arm, the stronger his blow will become.
From his appearance, Shalnark (Sharunāku?) seems to be a guileless and normal boy. However, see him in action with the rest of the Genei Ryodan and that thought is dispelled. Shalnark is one of the most intelligent and quick-thinking members in the group--being adept at using the computer and at information gathering, providing the brains behind the brawn. Shalnark is also a Hunter, so he has the ability to gain access to certain information that could be potentially useful in the Genei Ryodan. He has the member number 9, and ranks 10th in physical power (except in Auto Mode). Nen Abilities:
•Black Voice - Mobile Fate Detector:
Shalnark is able to control the physical movements of any person he has targeted, as long as he has a special antenna on them and that person is not already being controlled. This is done via a cellphone interface in which he remotely controls other people from a distance, while pointing the antenna at one he placed on the person.
When Shalnark places an antenna on himself, he temporarily gains immense strength. However, he can only control himself through giving himself instructions and cannot withdraw from Auto Mode until he has accomplished the task. After leaving Auto Mode, Shalnark has intense muscle pain for two days. He also doesn't retain any memory of what happens in that state.
Member number 8 in the Genei Ryodan, a replacement for the last member since the Ryodan came together. Shizuku is extremely forgetful. If she is ever unable to remember something, she will never remember it, no matter how others may try to remind her. She can be airheaded, which along with her unassuming appearance, can cause her opponents to underestimate her combat abilities. Shizuku is also left handed, and the 12th physically strongest out of the 13 members of the Ryodan. Nen Ability - Deme-chan (Blinky): Shizuku uses her nen to create a self-styled "living" vacuum cleaner she names "Deme-chan" that is able to consume any inanimate object. This has proven very useful in many occasions for cleaning up evidence that the members leave behind, especially blood and dead corpses. Living things or objects made from Nen cannot be consumed. In combat, Shizuku can use the vacuum as a club weapon, or use the razor sharp teeth on Deme-chan's "mouth" as piercing weapon. No object consumed by her vacuum cleaner can be retrieved, except for the very last object sucked in. No one knows where the sucked up items go, not even Shizuku herself.
Member number 11 of the Genei Ryodan, Ubogin is one of the original members of the Ryodan from the Ryūseigai. Out of all of the Genei Ryodan, he is the strongest in terms of raw physical power. Ubogin is so strong, direct hits from bullets, sniper bullets, and even anti-tank rockets will do no visible damage to him. Like all of the Ryodan, Ubogin never hesitates to kill, and in fact particularly enjoys combat against skilled opponents. Although he prefers to fight alone, Ubogin becomes stronger when fighting with a partner (specifically, Nobunaga), because he fights better when he has someone else to protect, although he would never admit this.
Death: Seeking revenge on Kurapika for capturing him after his battle with the Injyuu, Ubogin tracked Kurapika to the hotel where Neon and the rest of her bodyguards were staying. They fought one-on-one in a small canyon on the outskirts of York Shin City. Kurapika eventually captures Ubogin with his Chain Jail, and questions him about the location and abilities of the other Ryodan members. Ubogin refuses to answer any questions, only telling Kurapika, "Kill me." Finally, Kurapika pierced Ubogin's chest with the Judgement Chain ability, giving Ubogin the condition that he must answer all questions truthfully. Kurapika once again asks Ubogin the location of the other Ryodan members, to which Ubogin only smiles and calls Kurapika an idiot. Kurapika's Judgement Chain pierces Ubogin's heart, instantly killing him. Ubogin is buried in an unmarked grave at the site of their battle. Nen Ability: Big Bang Impact: Ubogin's favorite ability is his "Big Bang Impact". Though it is little more than a punch pumped with nen, it is extremely powerful due to Ubogin's level of Reinforcement nen. The impact can create a large crater several meters in width and depth. His goal is to make the Big Bang Impact as powerful as a nuclear missile.
• Position in the family: Second youngest child
The missing child of the Zaoldyecks, Alluka has only appeared once during the series. In Volume 22 Chapter 229 of the manga, his back is shown in a picture of the five Zaoldyeck sons along with their mother. His name is officially stated in the official Hunter x Hunter Guide book in a family tree of the Zaoldyecks. An alternate way of discovering his name is via a pattern seen with the Zaoldyeck's sons from oldest to youngest: IlluMilluKilluAlluKalluto. It is speculated he left his family and that his younger brother Kalluto has joined the Genei Ryodan in order to find him.
• Position in the family: Oldest child
Irumi is Killua's eldest brother. He is an experienced assassin, whom along with his father was responsible for Killua's training and upbringing. During the Hunter's Exam, Irumi camouflaged his appearance and took upon an alias, using special pins to change his entire facial structure to the point where he can only be recognized by his voice. An oppressive evil aura about him makes even Killua fearful and wary whenever he approaches Irlumi.
Irumi was responsible for planting a needle in Killua's head, which forces him to run from a battle he is not certain of winning - even if it means deserting Gon. This is to ensure that Killua will be able to live to carry on the family business, and also a means of protecting his little brother. This needle is self-extracted by Killua in the battle against Rammotto.
He holds a strange and emotionless affection towards Killua. When Irumi confronts Killua during the Hunter's Exam, he mentions that he was worried when he left home; this while having no expression on his face. Despite the harsh methods Irumi puts him through, he still cares for Killua quite a bit.
Irumi's face is an expressionless like a mask--no one can fathom his thoughts or feelings, especially since his iris and pupils are both jet black. His lack of empathy makes him perfect for the job of an assassin. Coupled with his lightning-quick and bulls-eye control of his signature pins, that can kill victims even without them noticing, Irumi is quite fearsome, both as a person and in combat.
A certain amount of friendship is shared between Hisoka and Irumi, although it is unclear as to how it could have developed. Irumi once came to the aid of Hisoka by standing for him as a double in the Ryodan hideout whilst Hisoka attempted to find Kuroro.
• Although never explicitly stated, Irumi may use his nen in order to assist him in his disguises. Near the end of the York Shin City arc, he poses as Hisoka as a favor to him, but can only keep his transformation intact for five hours or so without using pins to hold the shape. Besides that ability, he was shown controlling the recently deceased body of one of the Ten Godfathers during the Genei Ryodan arc. He has also used his pins to force an assistant helping the Hunter Test examiners to truthfully answer his question, however, it is unclear whether the pins forced him to only tell the truth or whether it was due to the pain and disfiguration the pins caused.
• Position in the family: Youngest child
Kalluto is the younger brother of Killua. He was initially introduced with his mother during Gon's Retrieval of Killua from Kukuruu Mountain. Kalluto appears again during the Genei Ryodan arc, assisting his older brother Illumi with the assassination of the ten Mafia leaders that had placed a bounty on the Genei Ryodan. Kalluto's next appearance was during the Greed Island arc, where he has become a member of the Genei Ryodan himself after Hisoka's departure. Kalluto's reason for joining the Genei Ryodan is that he wishes to bring his brother Killua back home, and Kalluto feels that this is the best way to do so. During this arc we are introduced to his nen ability to control paper. He can even use paper cutouts of people for audio surveillance (seen being used to observe Genei Ryodan members). There is a slight possibility Kalluto's real intention is to find his other brother Alluka, as revealed in the Chimera Ant arc of the manga, though this has not been confirmed yet.
Note: It is a common misconception that Kalluto is female. The manga explicitly states that the Zaoldyeck family has five sons. Further more, the official HxH guide book states that Kalluto is male.
• Position in the family: Mother
Kikyou is Killua's mother, who was injured while attempting to prevent him from running away from home (although Illumi states that she is proud of Killua for doing so). She is the maternal figure of the Zaoldyeck family and is herself an assassin. She seems to be slightly paranoid and is cautious of Killua's friends Gon, Kurapika and Leorio. Kikyou is eagerly awaiting for Killua to excel in assassination and to continue on with the family business.
Kikyou is 170 centimeters tall (about 5 ft 7 in) and dresses in elaborate Victorian style clothing. Her face is covered in bandages and has an electronic visor covering her eyes. The visor is capable of being used as a communications device, although what other purpose it suits is unknown.
• Position in the family: Great great grandfather
The oldest assassin in the Zaoldyeck family, Maha is Zeno's grandfather. Almost nothing is known about him. Maha only appeared once in chapter 100 of the manga (and episode 62 of the anime) along with Kalluto and Illumi on a mission to kill the 10 Mafia Godfathers, and was mentioned in chapter 264 together with other members of the Zaoldyeck family, as having once fought Netero. His body seems to have deteriorated considerably due to his advanced age; at 140 centimeters (about 4 ft 7 in), he is even shorter than Kalluto.
• Position in the family: Second oldest child
Killua's second eldest brother, Illumi is an obese figure who possesses a strong aversion to performing any kind of physical activity. In fact, prior to the York Shin City auctions, Illumi had not left the mansion in eight years. He seems to be a sort of otaku, since his room is covered with female figurines from various anime and computer games. Illumi seems to be talented in hacking computer systems, as Killua asked him to hack into a memory card from Ging and he said it would be no problem. He was also one of the people injured during Killua's escape. Illumi is primarily in charge of torturing Killua with whips and electrocution, but doesn't have the drive to carry it out very long as it's extreme physical exertion to him.
After being tipped off the whereabouts of Greed Island, Illumi 's excitement resulted in one of the rarer moments in which he made an outside expedition in search of the game. However, he was unable to win a copy and left in frustration.
• Position in the family: Father
Silva is Killua's father. A silent, pensive figure, Killua's interaction with him seems not to be much. He allows Killua to go along with Gon on their journey, but this is only so Killua will gain more experience when thrown out into the real world on his own. During the September third portion of the York Shin City arc, Silva and his father Zeno are both hired by the Mafia to assassinate the Genei Ryodan, but withdraw from the job when their clients are killed by Illumi, Maha, and Kalluto.
• Nen Ability
Only one of Silva's nen abilities has ever been shown, during Zeno and Silva's fight against Kuroro. He can create and fire huge balls of nen from his hands.
• Position in the family: Grandfather
Zeno is Killua's grandfather and Silva's father. A wily old man, his advancing age has not dampened his quick thinking and speed in battle. Appearing somewhat eccentric, he wears a sign that says, "A kill a day." The Viz Media version translates this to "Never Retire."
Zeno has quite high expectations of Killua, observing that out of all the descendants of the assassin family, Killua is the most outstanding student of assassin skills.
Only Zenos grandfather is known, which is Maha. His father is shown once in chapter 264 and is most likely dead, because it was stated that there are currently ten living members of the Zaoldyeck family. Along with Zenos father it would be 11.
• Nen ability - Dragon Head: Long-Tou Xi-Hua 「龍頭戯画」
Zeno's nen ability, the Dragon Head, was first revealed in his battle against Kuroro Lucifer. Zeno can emit his nen into the form of a dragon. He controls the movements of the dragon with his hands, and it always is connected. A variant of this technique is the Dragon Dive, where the dragonform shatters in hundreds of smaller nen-dragons which aren't connected to his hands anymore.
Kanaria is a red-headed girl who is a member of guards elite. She doesn't want to let Gon pass and is giving him a hard time, but later accompanies him, Leorio and Kurapica to the guards' headquarters. Killua had once asked kanaria to be his friend, but kanaria had rejected it thinking that she was a servant. Later, when she escorted Gon, Leorio and Kurapica to the headquaters, killua gives her his favorite skateboard.
Goto is Zaoldyeck family manager. All contacts with the family members must go through him. An enigmatic and intimidating character, Killua once expressed to Gon his recurring nightmares of Goto chasing him with a knife.
