Kaitou Kid is a cocky retro-thief that steals jewels, diamonds and other gaudy baubles, and it is said that he will never be caught. He has his own manga series, Magic Kaito. His civilian identity is high-school class clown Kaito Kuroba.

Kid returns or throws away everything he steals, but before he actually steals anything, he sends a heist note to his "victims". These notes contain riddles stating where and when he will strike to take his prize and is always marked with his trademark Kid caricature.



He is sometimes known as the International Criminal #1412. He was named Kid when a journalist hastily scrawled "1412" and Booker (Yuusaku) Kudo read it as "KID" (14 = KI, 12 = D). The Japanese word "kaitou" means "phantom thief."

History: Kaitou Kid is searching for a special gem named Pandora. This gem was born inside another gem, and cries tears of immortality when a volley comet comes close to the Earth (every 10,000 years). The gem inside turns scarlet under moonshine. The syndicate that Snake works for (it has not been specified if this organization is indeed the Black Organization from the Detective Conan series or not) is also after Pandora, so Kid wants to find the gem so as to prevent them from using it. Also, eight years ago, the previous Kaitou Kid, Toichi Kuroba, Kaito Kuroba's father was killed for this stone by Snake's organization, so there might just be an element of vengeance as well.

Information

By day, Kaito Kuroba is a hyperactive high school student and magician, living a happy, carefree life with his mother and his best friend, Aoko Nakamori.

By night, however, he sheds his masks and dons a white suit and monocle to become the Kaitou Kid, jewel thief extraordinaire.

The Kaitou Kid is notorious, not just for delivering notices to the public and police of what he's going to take and when, or for taking his targets despite the most sophisticated security systems human ingenuity can devise, but also for returning what he takes a few days later, unharmed. That last is, of course, what drives the police force, headed by Aoko's father, crazy.

They don't know that Kaito is in fact the son of the first Kaitou Kid, who was murdered by a criminal organisation that he had once been hired by, and that his heists are not for gain but an attempt to lure his father's murderers out of hiding - an attempt that seems to be getting mixed results so far...
