STORY
The series is a spin-off of the Triangle Heart series of games and OVAs. Nanoha, the magical girl and younger sister of Kyōya and Miyuki, takes precedence here while her sword-wielding siblings are reduced to minor characters. Nanoha is also clearly set in an alternate universe; the late Shirō Fuwa was always named Takamachi and survived his originally fatal injury, new characters such as Fate Testarossa are added, and others, such as Fiasse Crystela, are removed.
A sequel, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's, aired between October and December of 2005. A third series, titled Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS began airing on April 1, 2007. There have also been corresponding manga series bridging the story and adding new elements to it, as well as CD dramas.
(Season 1)
Nanoha Takamachi is a 3rd grade elementary school girl. She lives with her parents who run a coffee shop, and her older sister and brother who are in high school and university respectively. Nanoha's regular life changes when she hears a voice calling to her on the way home and ends up rescuing an injured ferret (who is actually a transformed boy called Yūno, an archaeologist from a distant world). She obtains a magical crystal called Raising Heart , and gains magical powers.
After their encounter, Nanoha and Yūno have to collect the twenty-one "Jewel Seeds" powerful lost crystals from Yūno's world that grant wishes and are very dangerous when misused. However, Nanoha and Yūno are not the only ones after the Jewel Seeds. So is Fate Testarossa, a foreign girl with sad eyes...
Season 2 (A's)
A's is set six months after the first series and begins by explaining what has happened in the time between the two series. Nanoha has been constantly practicing her techniques whilst Fate and Arf have remained in the custody of the Time-Space Administration agency, patiently waiting for the results of her trial. Fate and Nanoha have been keeping in contact by sending video DVDs to each other.
While working on an assignment at home, Raising Heart tells Nanoha that danger is approaching. Nanoha enters battle with the mysterious girl and is injured heavily due to the massive damage that the girl's weapon is capable of inflicting. Fate and Yūno arrives just in time to save Nanoha from death and battles the girl, but the girl's friends come to join in the battle shortly after. The first battle with the Wolkenritters already showed the power of them and their magical devices.
Throughout this series, Hayate Yagami, the wheelbound girl, was seen frequently with the Wolkenritters. It is not until much later in the series, was it explained. Hayate Yagami is actually the new mistress of the Buch der Dunkelheit (Book of Darkness), thus, became the mistress of the Wolkenritters too. However, she treats them differently from their other previous masters, caring for them as if they were her friends, which is why they showed feelings when they are not supposed to. The reason why she is wheelbound is because the Book of Darkness is eating into her and the Wolkenritters thought that the only way to stop it was to fill up all the 666 pages of Book of Darkness, thus, disobeying Hayate's order to stop hurting people because they had grown to love Hayate.
Nanoha and Fate were oblivious to the fact that Hayate is the mistress of Book of Darkness and had even become friends with her, it was not till they met the Wolkenritters in her hospital ward while visiting her then they realised it was her. This set off a series of events and let Hayate trigger the key of opening the Book of Darkness.
Season 3 (StrikerS)
Strikers takes place after the epilogue of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's, aired between October and December of 2005. While the epilogue connected A's to a world six years later, Strikers advances the timeline another four years, where the main characters have gone on to work for the Time-Space Administration Bureau (TSAB) and come upon a new case. The series focuses more on team-based battles and bureaucracy rather than individual rivalry and school life, due to the change in character dynamics.
Character Biographies

Nanoha Takamachi (Takamachi Nanoha?) is the main and title character of the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha series and also appears in Triangle Heart. To use the abbreviated forms of the series Minami Hokuto plays her in Toraha, Yukari Tamura in Nanoha. She has a strong aptitude in magic, a rarity for those born on Earth, amongst these numbered few are Gil Graham, Hayate Yagami, and possibly her own father. She is a quick learner in the magical arts and exceeds expectations consistently throughout the series. In Nanoha, instead of having a familiar of her own creation, she is partnered with another mage named Yūno Scrya from Mid-childa, who can shapeshift into a ferret. Her weapon is an artificially intelligent staff called Raising Heart.

Fate Testarossa, also known as Fate T. Harlaown , is a fictional character in the anime series Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. Like many characters hailing from the magical worlds. She is voiced by Nana Mizuki. In the series, Fate is a mage from the Garden of Time, sent to collect Jewel Seeds, which puts her at odds with rival Nanoha Takamachi. She is aided on her quest by an animal familiar, a mature dog-woman named Arf.In A's, Fate and Arf join the Time-Space Administration Bureau and go to Earth to team up with Nanoha again. Their new mission is to prevent the Wolkenritter from stealing mages' Linker Cores (power source) for their Book of Darkness. Nanoha introduces Fate to her friends as a transfer student, and Fate has to get used to civilian life, cell phones and having a new mother figure in Lindy Harlaown. Early on in the season, Bardiche is upgraded to be able to compete with the Wolkenritter's weapons, and is renamed "Bardiche Assault".
In an epilogue taking place six years later, Fate is older, has been adopted by Lindy, and working for the TSAB along with Nanoha and Hayate. She has changed her name to Fate T. Harlaown, with the T an abbreviation for Testarossa.

Hayate Yagami (Yagami Hayate?) is one of the main characters of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's, though she appears in neither the previous series Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha nor the later alternate story Triangle Heart. She is voiced by Kana Ueda in a strong Kansai dialect. Hayate is a cute, kind-hearted orphan in a wheelchair who is actually the mistress of the Book of Darkness and the Wolkenritter (Signum, Vita, Shamal and Zafira) but is unaware that they are causing harm to other people.
Hayate's magic works slightly differently than that of Fate or Nanoha, in the fact that the closest thing she has to "familiars" are the Wolkenritter and her "weapon" is the Book of Darkness. She uses a mix of the Mid-childa and Belka styles, but in the manga, identifies herself more with the Belka side.

Signum (Shigunamu?), voiced by Kaori Shimizu, is a character in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's. She appears in neither the previous series Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha nor the alternate universe story Triangle Heart, but appears in the upcoming anime Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS. Signum is the leader of the Wolkenritter (German > "Cloud Riders" or "Overcast Knights"), a creation of the Book of Darkness. She is generally seen as the cold one, but Shamal has said that Signum's heart has warmed since they met their mistress Hayate Yagami. Signum's weapon is a chain-link sword called Laevatein, and as a magical creation, she has no familiar. She is named for the Opel Signum, much like characters of Magic Knight Rayearth are named for cars, and her device appears to be named after the mythical sword Laevateinn
Vita ( Vīta?) is a character in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's, voiced by Asami Sanada. She appears in neither the previous series Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha nor the later story Triangle Heart, but she does appear in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS. Vita is one of the Wolkenritter, a creation of the Book of Darkness. She is the most devoted of the four to Hayate Yagami, their mistress. Vita's weapon is a mallet called Graf Eisen, and as a magical creation, she has no familiar. She is named for the Opel Vita, much like characters of Magic Knight Rayearth are named for cars (for example, Opel Zafira).

Shamal, being Yūno's counterpart, does not actually fight, but uses her ring devices to defend, create portals, absorb victims' Linker Cores into the Book of Darkness, and the like. Her weapon is named Klarer Wind, Ring of the Breezes, its master, Shamal is known as Knight of the Lake. When she transformed, her armour is green in colour just like her magic colour and came with a hat somewhat like Vita, different only by the colour and and minor designs. Shamal acts as the 'mother' of the group, doing the shopping, worrying excessively over the others' well-being, and constructing excuses to Hayate as to why they are out so often ("The grocery store doesn't have our brand of olive oil"). She knows that Hayate does not want them to fight anyone for her, but it is still no question that they must. She is named for the Maserati Shamal.
In the anime and manga, it's implied that she can't cook, as her cooking always tastes terrible (especially when compared with Hayate's cooking, which she is good at).

Yūno is a magic-user from the Midchilda, and is the same age as Nanoha. Despite his young age, he worked as an archaeologist and discovered a set of ancient and powerful artifacts (the magical term for this is Lost Logia) known as the Jewel Seeds. He is responsible and reliable, despite his young age. He is named after the Mazda Eunos.

Fate's outspoken dog-woman familiar. Her distaste of Precia is mutual, but she cannot do anything to protect Fate from her mother. Arf instead takes out her anger on her enemies. She is very kind to Fate and somewhat protective of her. She is named for "arf", the onomatopoeia of a dog's bark.

Chrono Harlaown (Kurono Haraoun?) is a fictional character in the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha series. He is voiced by Mikako Takahashi in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha and Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's, and by Tomokazu Sugita in the epilogue scene of A's and Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS. Chrono is a commissioned officer of the Time-Space Administration Bureau, and Admiral Lindy Harlaown's son. He first met Nanoha, Fate, and Yūno during the Lost Logia incident involving Precia Testarossa.

Reinforce (リインフォース, Riinfōsu?) is a key character in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's, who reveals herself near the end. She does not appear in either Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha or the alternate universe shown in the Triangle Heart series. She is voiced by Sanae Kobayashi. The former Book of Darkness and creator of the Wolkenritter (Signum, Vita, Shamal and Zafira), Reinforce was reformed by Hayate Yagami and became her partner.
Reinforce is a Lost Logia and an intelligent creation of Belkan mages whose names have been lost to time. In Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS, she is reformatted into the much smaller Reinforce II.

Subaru Nakajima (Subaru Nakajima?) is a character in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS, voiced by Chiwa Saito. She's completely original to the series, not appearing in any of the previous series in the franchise. Subaru has a deep-rooted admiration of Nanoha Takamachi, aspiring to be just like her. Subaru even made her own version of Divine Buster.Even though she uses Belka magics, Subaru is considered a mage instead of a knight. The reason for this has not been fully revealed in StrikerS. Subaru's form of magic-use is a hand-to-hand form called "Shooting Arts", which was taught to Subaru by her sister and is focused on shooting and magic-enhanced attacks.

Teana Lanster (Tiana Ransutā?) is a character in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS. Along with Subaru Nakajima, Teana is the leader of the forwards.Teana is a user of Mid-Childa magic system. Because of that, she was given the position of the role of center guard of the Forward Team. Teana possess a gun-like Intelligent Device named Cross Mirage. And she also uses the illusion spells. At the end of the series, Teana seem to work as enforcer under Fate T. Harlaown at Time-Space Administration Bureau.

Erio Mondial ( Erio Mondīaru?) is a character in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS. Along with Caro Ru Lushe, he is one of the many kids that Fate Testarossa met and befriended while on duty, and one of the few that she actively looked after. He is the sole male member of Division 6's Forward Team and is portrayed as having an unusually solemn personality for a boy of his age and with a certain lack of common sense when it comes to elements of an ordinary lifestyle. Erio is a user of the Modern-Belka magic system, which complements the capacities of the original Belka system with traits of the Mid-Childa system. During his training, Erio received some tutoring from Fate and learned a few of her spells. Erio's specialties lies in electric-based elemental magic and high-speed close combat (probably also due Fate's training). Because of that, he was given the position of Guard Wing of the Forward Team, where he is supposed provide quick support to all his allies, regardless of their position in the battlefield. Erio possess a spear-like Armed Device named Strada.

Caro Ru Lushe (キャロ・ル・ルシエ, Kyaro Ru Rushie?) is a character in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS. Fate T. Harlaown became her guardian after sad circumstances left Caro with no place to live. Wherever she goes, Caro is usually accompanied by her pet dragon, Friedrich (or Fried, for short). She is a kind and somewhat timid girl and, just like Erio, has little sense for matters of life that most people would see as ordinary. A user of the Mid-Childa magic system, Caro's area of expertise is known as Summon Magic. Specifically, she is skillful at summoning and controlling dragons (hence the name Dragon Summon). Furthermore, she is quite proficient at Increase-type Support spells. Taking that, plus her blatant handicap for direct combat (she is highly dependent of her summoned dragons in order to be functional) into consideration, Caro was assigned to the position of Fullback of the Forward Team. Like most users of Summoning Magic seen so far, Caro possess a Boost Device named Kerykeion.
Magical weapons
Intelligent Devices
Raising Heart
Nanoha's intelligent device. She refers to Nanoha as "master" and speaks only in English. Her magical colour is magenta. She has three "modes": Device Mode (initial appearance), Shooting Mode (for casting Divine Buster), and Sealing Mode.
As an intelligent device, she provides assistance and advice in the processing of magical attacks and fire control. Her special attack is Starlight Breaker and the auto-guard is Protection.
Voice: Donna Burke
Raising Heart Excelion
In A's, after being badly damaged in the first engagement against Vita and Graf Eisen, Raising Heart insisted on being retrofitted with the Belka-type cartridge system. She is capable of a fuller range of attacks with cartridges (loaded in magazines akin to those used in modern automatic weapons), and was officially renamed (though Nanoha still only addresses her as Raising Heart). Her three forms are called Accel Mode, Buster Mode, and Excelion Mode. In StrikerS, Exceed Mode replaces Excelion Mode while Nanoha's limiters are in place.
In the manga, Nanoha comments that Raising Heart is "so finely tuned in her functions that the maintenance staff has a hard time with her."
Bardiche
Fate's intelligent device. He refers to Fate as "sir" despite her gender, and also only speaks English. His magical colour is yellow. Like Raising Heart, he has three "forms": Device Form, Scythe Form, and Sealing Form.
Voice: Kevin J. England
Bardiche Assault
In A's, after being badly damaged in the first fight with Lævatein, Bardiche also is retrofitted at his request with a revolver-style cartridge system and like Raising Heart, was officially renamed (like Nanoha with Raising Heart, Fate just calls him Bardiche). His three forms are called Assault Form, Haken Form, and Zanber Form.
Mach Caliber
Subaru's Intelligent device which takes the form of a pair of rollerblades. She autocasts some of Subaru's spell such as "Wing Road" and "Assault Grip" during combat and claims she was made to make her stronger and faster, to which Subaru disagrees due to her view that Mach Caliber, as an intelligent device with her own will, has a soul and was born, not made. Mach Caliber's design was based off of Subaru's own magic rollerskates, which she was had made during her days as a cadet due to her fighting style being completely different from her peers. Mach Caliber is also in synch with Revolver Knuckle, Subaru's Armed Device, allowing it be stored in Mach Caliber when both are inactive as well as some deal of interaction between the two devices. During episode 19 of StrikerS, it was reinforced to be able to keep up with Subaru's cyborg capacities.
Voice: Kaoru Edo
Cross Mirage
Teana's Intelligent Device. A completely non-standard device, he was a remodelling of Teana's old "Anchor Gun" pseudo-Storage device. He's armed with a cartridge system and resembles a pair of handguns, though he can also be reduced to just one handgun in his "One-Hand Mode". While he more closely resembles a hybrid of Armed and Storage devices, he is classified as an Intelligent device due to his sophisticated AI, which helped Teana form her magical bullets during his maiden battle, a task she normally has difficulty doing in her more complex spells. While Teana was thankful for this help, she notes that it could prove weakening for her if she continues to rely on it. It has a second form dubbed "Dagger Mode" which, as the name the name suggests, transforms it into a close range weapon by generating blades of magical energy.
Voice: Jamie Schyy
Armed Devices
Graf Eisen
Vita's armed device, also called the "Iron Count". It appears to have no programmed gender, and speaks only German. Its general purpose form is a two-sided hammer that distantly resembles a polo mallet and handles up to 4 circular bombs (Schwalbe Fliegen), or create a massive sonic shockwave (Eisengeheul) as a distraction. Expending cartridges, it can also transform into a rocket-powered hammer with a sharpened tip, or change its own size.
Voice: Tetsuya Kakihara.
Levantine
Signum's armed device, also called the "Demon's Flaming Blade. It appears to have a personality but no programmed gender, and speaks only German. The name may be a reference to Lævateinn, of Norse mythology. Its regular form is a sword. Expending cartridges, it can transform into a chain-whip or a bow.
Voice: Tetsuya Kakihara.
Klair wind
Shamal's armed device, translated as "Clear Wind". These four rings are never used for combat, but can create portals, find Linker Cores and heal allies.
Voice: Alexandra Haefelin.
Schwertkreuz
Hayate's device, also called the "Sword Cross ", is categorized as an armed device in the merchandise. In the A's manga epilogue, Amy Limietta refers to it as "version 8". It has been revealed in an interview and in the DVD accompaniment materials that this is in fact Hayate's staff device used in A's episode 12.
Revolver Knuckle
Subaru's armed device, in synch with her intelligent device "Mach Caliber". Subaru's sister Ginga also has a Revolver Knuckle, but it fits a left hand while Subaru's fits a right hand. Apparently, Ginga's Revolver Knuckle is more suited to attack, and this opened a debate in the fandom regarding whatever or not Subaru's own Revolver Knuckle is more tuned for defensive purposes.
Strada
Erio's device. When inactive, it takes the form of his wristwatch. When active, it takes the form of a spear, and has much of the same function as one. Its second mode, dubbed Düsenform, is very similar to the original one, but with a greater number of rocket thrusters. This form grants Erio limited aerial combat capabilities, although is extremely complex to handle. Its third form, seems to be tuned to optimize electric-based spells. When Erio was first introduced he had a American voice. However all sub-sequent appearances have Strada with a voice similar to Graf Eisen's.
Voice: Tetsuya Kakihara
Unison Devices
Reinforce
Reinforce is a Unison Device, and the master program of the Book of Darkness. When the book was completed in episode 10, she merged with Hayate but largely was in control until Hayate reiterated her position as the device's master. Hayate, when she separated the viral defensive program from the rest of the Book and turns the spirit into a more normal-looking version of her familiar form, gives her the name Reinforce and takes her on as a partner. Reinforce's special attack is Ragnarok Breaker.
Voice: Sanae Kobayashi
Reinforce II
Reinforce II (simply called Rein by Hayate) is Hayate's unison device in the A's epilogue and StrikerS series. She is also known as a "control device", meaning that she helps Hayate organize and control her magic abilities. This function may be comparable to the AI programmed into the intelligent devices Raising Heart and Bardiche, but Reinforce II also has the heart and will characteristic of the Wolkenritter, and can manifest a hologram of herself as a smaller version of the original Reinforce. Reinforce II carries a blue book called the "Book of the Azure Sky", which is apparently a storage medium for magic spells.
Voice: Yukana
Agito
A masterless Unison Device expert in fire-based elemental magic, has been traveling along with Lutecia and Zest ever since they rescued her from an laboratory where illegal researches were being performed. Sees Reinforce Zwei as a rival for the sole fact that she has a "Meister", while Agito has not.
Voice: Mami Kameoka
Boost Devices
Kerykeion
A glove-shaped Boost Device manufactured for Caro's personal use, most of the complex support functions found in regular Devices were discarded for the sake of maximizing its capacities of magic power management. Kerykeion was created with two goals in mind: to reduce the amount of energy spent when performing summoning spells and the optimization of Increase-type Support magics. Its unnamed second mode is nearly identical to the default one, but with a pair of wings of light coming out of the jewels. It takes the form of a pair of bracelets when it is inactive. It shares its name with the original Greek name for a Caduceus.
Voice: Kaoru Edo
Asclepius
Lutecia's Boost Device, is nearly identical to Kerykeion, but with purple jewels instead of pink ones. Named after the symbol of the Greek demigod of medicine: Rod of Asclepius
Familiar
A familiar in the Nanoha universe is a magical creature that is created by a mage, based on an animal form. The process of creation is not known in detail, but in Arf's case, Fate created her when her former self was on the brink of death[5]. A familiar may be granted a specific purpose upon creation, and will vanish or expire once this purpose is fulfilled.
WikiQuote!!!
Vita:(seeing nanoha walk out of a fire)You devil...
Nanoha:It's okay if I'm a devil... I'll just use my hellish tools to get you to listen!
Vita: It's you... Takamachi Nantoka!
Nanoha: It's NANOHA! NA-NO-HA!
Signum: If you take even the slightest hit, you will die. Are you crazy, Testarosa?
Fate: That is so I can defeat you.
Signum: Can't stop---You can't stop us!
Fate: You will be stopped - by me and Bardiche!
Chrono: As for me and the ferret-changeling, we'll be in the witness seats this time. You should be answering questions like they're worded here...
Yuuno: Yeah, I understand... Er, HEY!
Chrono: What's wrong?
Yuuno: Who's a 'ferret-changeling?! WHO?!
Chrono: You are. Is there something wrong with that?
Yuuno: Argh...I may be in my animal form a lot, but "Yuuno Scrya" is a great name, you know!!
Arf: Y-Yuuno, calm down...
Fate: Chrono, you shouldn't be too mean...
Chrono: Don't worry. I only meant it as a joke to lighten the atmosphere...
Yuuno: Grrr....
Fate: According to Lieze apparently, I'm suited for executive officer work, and Nanoha is suited as a Combat Instructor for the Combat Division.
Chrono: Really, that's pretty upfront talk from those two... I wonder what they're up to.
Fate: What do you think Chrono?
Chrono: It's pretty accurate. It suits you, that is to say... Comparing all other qualities, it's a perfect match.
Nanoha: Really?
Chrono: Nanoha's combat ability is considerable. Your irresponsible reliance on your magic power complements your basic true character.
Nanoha: Er...
Chrono: You're extremely solid and quick to recover too.
Nanoha: Er... Are you praising me or are you insulting me?
Signum: Had we not meet like this... we may have been really good friends...
Fate: There still time for that...
Signum: (starting to cry) Stop...
Reinforce: Everything's ended, once again. How many times must I repeat this sadness?
Nanoha: Will Hayate-chan really be happy if you grant this wish?! Keeping your heart locked away and being nothing...but a tool to grant your mistress' wish , with no feeling of your own... Are you really okay with that?
Reinforce: I am a magical tome, I am nothing but a tool.
Nanoha: But you can use words, can't you? You have a heart, don't you? It would be weird if you didn't. If you didn't have a heart, you wouldn't be crying as you are right now!
Reinforce: These tears are my mistress' tears. I am a tool. I have no... sadness.
Fate: You have no sadness? You say those words with such a sad face... who would believe you?!
Nanoha: You also have a heart! It's okay to admit that you're sad!
Fate: You... think so? Seems aiming for that would mean going through all sorts of troubles. If Nanoha were to work at the Bureau, what would you...
Aria & Lotte: ENFORCER!
Nanoha: EEEH!
Aria: Looking at your data, other choices are unthinkable.
Lotte: You've got a flair for battle anyways. Aren't you glad Nanoha? Your future is set!
Nanoha: Should I be happy?
MANGA^^
SIGNUM is such a cutie^^...hehe cute face there!!
