Maka Albarn (マカ・アルバーン ,Maka Arubān?)

Maka is Soul's meister. They live together in an apartment in Death City, though Maka seems to be the one doing most of the household chores such as cooking. Maka and Soul make an efficient team, as shown at the start of the series when they had already claimed ninety-nine evil souls. Where Soul seems to be the brawn, Maka is the brain. She always tries to think of a way to beat their opponents by exploiting their weaknesses. Maka is a dedicated student at Shibusen, and scored highest of her class during doctor Stein's test. Her father is Shinigami's current death scythe and her mother was a very powerful scythe meister. They are currently divorced. While she adores her mother, Maka's relationship with her father is strained. She seems to hate him for constantly flirting with other women (which caused the divorce), though deep down she still loves him .
Maka is annoyed at the fact that her body has not developed yet (something which Soul tends to make fun of at times). Though she is more level-headed than Soul, Maka is prone to violent outbursts when anger gets the better of her. She usually hits Soul with a book (the so-called Maka-chop) after he does something perverted or makes fun of her. Maka may have feelings for Soul, as she seems to get jealous when Blair attempts to seduce him. Maka also stated she wants to get stronger for Soul after he got injured while protecting her.
After Soul got infected with the black blood, Maka started to develop black blood as well when she and Soul performed soul resonance. Maka first awakened the power of the black blood when facing off against Crona in the corridors below Shibusen. When using the black blood Maka is battle-crazed and incredibly powerful (even more so than Crona) yet the black blood also undermines her sanity, causing her to behave erratically at times. This can be seen during the battle with Crona where Maka tried to eat Crona's head. Maka is a skilled scythe meister and fights together with Soul. When she and Soul resonate their souls she is able to use the techniques Witch Hunter and Demon Hunter (a more powerful form of Witch Hunter created by her mother). Like Doctor Stein, Maka can use Soul Perception. This ability allows her to track down people by sensing their soul and in combat it can be used to gauge an opponent's strength.



Soul Eater Evans (ソウル・イーター・エヴァンス ,Sōru Ītā Evansu?)

Soul Eater, "Soul" to his friends, is Maka's Demon Scythe partner; his human appearance is that of a teenage boy, and his attitude is like one also. Soul's personality mostly consists of what he considers "cool". Being a "cool" guy, he almost always uses the direct approach which most of the time fails, and even drives a motorcycle, which both he and Maka use for transportation. He sometimes becomes too driven by the idea of eating souls, which leads him to bicker with Maka, but in the end they remain friends and partners. He may be in love with her as he is "willing to die for his technician". He is also friends with Black Star because of their similar personalities, but at the same time they cannot match each other's wavelength.
His way of absorbing souls is literally eating them. He says that it is the texture, not the taste, that matters. When Dr. Stein saw his soul, he said it was that of "a twisted person with a sarcastic soul." His body has been invaded by Ragnarok's black blood, giving him an energy boost but could lead to his soul consuming Maka's (if he lets it get out of control). Maka and Soul have currently awakened the Black Blood, but he managed to control it and they both did not lose their minds like Crona and Ragnarok. In the anime, a scene from a flashback suggests that Soul comes from a rich family. He is able to play the piano. In chapter thirty of the manga, Maka mentions that Soul played a "dark" song when they first met. After he and Maka fought Crona, Soul thought about Crona's fear of being close to others and states that he has that fear as well.
In chapter fifty-five, it is revealed that Soul comes from a noble family of musicians and he has an older brother named Wes, a violinist; whom Soul has an inferiority complex towards. It seems that Soul is the only current member of his family who can change into a weapon.
