Nana Osaki is a punk singer who wants to debut with her band as soon as possible to leave her ex-boyfriend, Ren Honjo, behind. Nana was the lead vocalist in their old band with Ren, and they lived together as lovers. When Ren is offered a chance to debut in Tokyo as a replacement member of the popular band Trapnest (TraNes for short), Nana chooses to cultivate her own band, Black Stones (BlaSt for short) instead.
Nana Komatsu, the other Nana, is called Hachi as she has weak mental characteristics that resemble a puppy. With a habit of falling in love at first sight, Hachi has always depended on other people to help her. When her friends and then boyfriend leave for Tokyo, she decides to join them a year later after having saved enough money.
Nana and Hachi meet in a train by chance, both on their way to Tokyo. After a string of coincidences, they come to live together in an apartment numbered 707. Despite having contrasting characters and ideals, the Nanas like and respect each other.
While the Black Stones begin to gain popularity at live gigs, other issues need resolving, especially in the areas of romance. The story of Nana revolves heavily on the romance and relationships of the two characters as one seeks fame and recognition while the other seeks love and happiness.

Main Characters
Nana Osaki(大崎ナナ, Ōsaki Nana?) a.k.a Nana (ナナ, Nana?) or "Nana O.
"
Voiced by: Romi Paku
** Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show**
One of the titular characters of the series, Osaki Nana may look like a tough punk rocker, but she has a kind heart and is a
devoted friend. Nana O. was born March 5, 1981 in Meguro, Tokyo. She is the illegitimate daughter of Misuzu Ozaki, who left Nana in the care of her grandmother when she was four years old. Nana has not seen her mother since, and has thus forgotten what she looks like. Nana's grandmother, Miyuki, was very strict, and forbade her from wearing the colors pink and red because she did not want Nana O. to "tempt" men and become like her mother. Nana O., however, had a rebellious streak. In high school, she was friendless until she met Nobuo Terashima, who introduced her to punk music and bands such as The Sex Pistols. Her favorite designer is Vivienne Westwood, and her favorite band is the Sex Pistols.
She was falsely accused of prostitution and was expelled when she didn't deny the charges. Nana O. soon regretted her decision; she believes that the accusations led to her grandmother's fatal illness. However, as a present to herself, Nana bought her first red dress.
Nana O. wore the red dress to a punk concert with Nobu, where she first laid eyes on Ren Honjo. Nana was instantly captivated by him, and accepted Ren's offer when he asked her to join the band he was starting with Nobu and their friend Yasu.
As the lead singer of the band Black Stones (Blast, for short), Nana gained a rabid following of fans in her hometown. She developed a typically "cool" appearance, wearing the punk fashions of Vivienne Westwood and getting a lotus tattoo on her arm. She also moved in with Ren, and the two shared an intense romance until Ren told her that he had been offered a big record deal and would be leaving Blast to play with the band Trapnest in Tokyo. Though Ren and Nana still loved each other, they believed that a long distance relationship would be pointless. Nana proudly refused to abandon her own musical career to follow Ren; thus, their relationship ended.
Determined to "polish the shards of her dreams" and become a successful musician (vocalist in Blast), Nana moved to Tokyo and re-formed Blast with Nobu, Yasu, and a new bassist, Shin. She also befriended Nana Komatsu, a kind-hearted but scatter-brained girl who, like Nana Osaki, wished to fulfill her dreams in Tokyo. The two Nanas shared an apartment (numbered 707, "Nana" being the Japanese word for seven) and became quite close despite their different personalities and aspirations. Nana gave Nana Komatsu the nickname "Hachi," which was adopted by their mutual friends. Nana also became fiercely protective of Hachi, going so far as to physically threaten Hachi's philandering boyfriend, Shoji. However, Nana is also somewhat possessive of Hachi, and feels jealous when anyone appears to be taking "her" Hachi away.
Hachi helped reunite Nana with her first love by inviting her to attend a Trapnest concert. At first Nana turned her down, but eventually gave in and agreed to go. For the first time in two years, Nana saw Ren in person. Ren saw her too, and they rekindled their romance that night. Nana thanked Hachi by introducing her to Trapnest's guitarist, Takumi, whom Hachi idolized. However, Takumi's cold "playboy" personality put doubts in Nana's mind, and she wondered if he was a suitable partner for her friend.
It soon became apparent, however, that during the period they were separated, Ren and Nana grew apart despite the fact that they still love each other. When they use to date, Ren and Nana often shared secrets and talk with one another; however, Nana now no longer confides in Ren as much. This fact worries her because whenever she has a problem, the person she turns to is Yasu, who, in turn, often rushes to her aid regardless of the time or place. Her trust in Yasu is perhaps because throughout all the years, Yasu remained an unending source of strength and a pillar of support for her, while Ren (like the mother who abandoned her) left her behind to pursue his own dreams. It was hinted that perhaps she has never forgiven Ren for it.
As the story progresses, Blast gets a record deal at Gaia Records and is quickly thrust into the public spotlight. Nana has trouble coping with the paparazzi, especially when tabloids print stories about Ren's possible affairs and probe into the location of her long-absent mother. Though Ren proposes to Nana and asks her to move in with him, their relationship is often volatile and Nana wonders if it will last. She gets engaged to her first love, Ren, although she also has lingering, ambiguous feelings for Yasu. Nana also feels Hachi slipping away, since she has moved in with her now-husband, Takumi, and rarely sees her. Nana hopes to reconnect with Hachi, and their time in apartment 707 remains special in her heart.
Subsequently, both Nanas manage to catch up, first during Reira's birthday party and later, after Hachi's official engagement to Takumi, which Nana compared to as becoming "the wife of an underworld leader".
Later in the series, it is revealed out that Nana's mother is actually alive, and her whereabouts are exposed by a magazine called Search, which had previously exposed Ren and Nana's relationship to the public. It turns out that Nana's mother had actually maintained a fairly normal lifestyle and even had a child of her own, Misato Uehara. The Misato that the band knew was really Mai Tsuzuki, who borrowed Misato's name to feel like Nana's real little sister. Mai was the granddaughter of a man who was a lover of Nana's grandmother, and subsequently reading her grandfather's diary became a fan of Blast and Nana. The real Misato has an incredible likeness to Nana, and when she finds out that her mother abandoned her idol, she flees in shock and disappointment.
It is hinted at that Nana disappears and is never seen again, throughout many manga chapters. She is seen, though, with long blonde hair, while there are many rumours and speculations that she is dead. A mysterious person sends Hachiko pictures of her singing, with the Ren lotus still on her arm. And Hachiko exclaims and breaks down crying, because she always believed that her friend wasn't dead, and that she waited for the day for her and Ren to be reunited again.
Miscellaneous
She may have got her lotus tattoo because of Ren (Ren is a Japanese name for lotus).
Her name is written in katakana, a contrast to Komatsu's (which is in kanji with the second one being a symbol of repetition for kanji).
She has been on the cover of every volume of the manga series. Also, the covers depict her activities with Hachi, which includes meeting her in apartment 707, shopping and watching a movie, among others.
Nana Komatsu (小松奈々, Komatsu Nana?) a.k.a Hachi (ハチ, Hachi?) or "Nana K."
Voiced by: Kaori
** Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show**
The other "Nana" of the series, alongside Nana Osaki, this Nana comes to Tokyo looking to find her dream. Unlike Osaki, however, she comes from a large and happy household, though her childish outlook prevents her from living on her own initially. She's the middle child of three sisters.
Her chance encounter with Osaki began a friendship which changes Komatsu's life forever. Due to her kindness and faithfulness,Nana Osaki nicknames her "Hachi," after the dog Hachikō (ハチ公, Hachikō?). Additionally, "hachi" means the number "eight" in Japanese, while "nana" is one reading for "seven." She is introduced to Osaki's band, Black Stones, and their members (Nobuo Terashima and Yasushi Takagi initially). She later even helps "Blast" to find their bassist, by drawing a poster to advertise the vacancy. Much to her surprise, she also discovers that the members of Blast were friends with the members of Trapnest, a popular rock band of which she's a very big fan. After learning of Osaki's breakup with Honjo Ren, she helps the two to reconnect after realizing that they were still very much in love with each other.
In the early stages of the manga, Nana was dating Shoji Endo, until he cheated on her with Sachiko, a co-worker at the restaurant where he works. After this he chooses to stay with Sachiko as she stood up for him when Osaki threaten to beat him up. But its hinted that they still have some feelings for each other, as shown in their meeting after Komatsu entered an engagement with Takumi.
After Shoji, Komatsu found herself caught between two men: Takumi Ichinose, the leader of Trapnest, and Nobu, the guitarist of Blast (Osaki's band). Komatsu discovers she is pregnant, and although she loves Nobuo, she realizes that Takumi would be in a better position to care for her and her unborn child. Her child would be named Sachiko but in the end turned out to be Satsuki.
She is now the wife of Takumi (initially in name only, for Takumi delayed their wedding because of Osaki's engagement to Ren) and expecting a child. Her married name throughout the series is Nana Ichinose (一ノ瀬 奈々, Ichinose Nana?). She hopes that she will be able to live happily. Her nickname is "Hachi" - a shortened version of Hachikō because she always tries to be kind and faithful to her friends, like the dog from the Hachikō legend. (Hachi means eight in Japanese, and the kanji for seven can be pronounced as 'nana'. This also clears up confusion between the two Nanas.) A running gag in the series is for Hachi to suddenly sprout a pair of dog-like ears and a tail whenever she's very happy.
With the reporters of SEARCH (a paparazzi magazine) snapping photos of Ren and Reira together alone, Takumi decided to do some manipulating by revealing his relationship with Komatsu to SEARCH, who decided to run that news instead. As such, the couple were formally married.
However, trouble was brewing. SEARCH's photographer decided to show Hachi photos of Nana's birth mother. Hachi then travels to Osaka to uncover the truth for herself.
Personality
As noted above, due to her sheltered raising Nana Komatsu is initially a rather childish and self-absorbed person. She relied heavily on Saotome Junko, a high school friend of hers.
When it comes to relationships, Hachi has fallen in (and out of) love many times. The first man she ever slept with was Asano Takashi, who was a lot older than her. During a chance encounter in Tokyo, she comically warned him not to cheat again. However, like her subsequent exes, she could only forget about him totally after being together with another guy (in this case, Shouji).
Though very capable of great acts of kindness and caring for her friends, and even strangers, Hachi tends to be very self-absorbed at times failing to take into consideration the feelings of others. Though her friends care for her deeply, they sometimes seem to think of her as burdensome as well.
blue]Trivia
The covers of the manga series depict her activities with Osaki, which includes meeting her in apartment 707, shopping and watching a movie, among others. Also, she does not appear on the cover of volume 1, which is her only absence so far.
Her birthday is on 30 November, 1980 (She celebrated her 21st birthday on 30 November 2001, which is featured in volume 16.)
Black Stones
** Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show**
Black Stones - normally shortened to Blast (ブラスト, Burasuto?) - is a popular punk band within the series. Ren was once a member of the group, but, after his departure to join Trapnest, they recruit a new member, Shin. They attract a large following, and ultimately sign a deal with Gaia Records. Nana O. is their main vocalist.
Nobuo Terashima (寺島伸夫, Terashima Nobuo?) a.k.a. Nobu (ノブ, Nobu?)
Voiced by: Seki Tomokazu
** Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show**
He is the guitarist of Blast and was the only person able to befriend Nana Osaki during high school -which coincidentally began their shared love for punk music. He is friendly and optimistic, but at times, he tends to miss the focus of conversations around him. Before Nana's "smoking ban", he's the only non-smoking member of Blast. However, his threshold for alcohol is poor and he accidentally leaks many secrets while he's drunk (most notably, about Nana and Ren's relationship to Shin). Like Yasushi, Nobu comes from a rich family (his parents own an inn). Despite this, he is still very passionate about music, even sharing Osaki's dream of making it big with a band one day. He falls in love with Hachi and they start a short but happy relationship. When Takumi tells Nobu about her pregnancy, Hachi painfully leaves him for Takumi. While he eventually accepts the reasons why she left him, he still fears the possibility of the child being his. He still has fond feelings for Hachi but decides to get in a relationship with Yuri.
Shinichi Okazaki (岡崎真一, Okazaki Shin'ichi?) a.k.a. Shin (シン, Shin?)
Voiced by: Akira Ishida
** Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show**
He is the bass player of Blast. Though mature and tall for his age, he is 15 years old and is the youngest member of the band. Because of his dysfunctional family, Shin left his home and abandoned his original family name. He moonlights as a male prostitute with Reira being one of his "clients." Among other things, he's an expert mahjong player and a confidant and early roommate to Nobu. He stops seeing Reira to protect her status and his own feelings -also possibly sparked from fear by Takumi's warning. Ryouko Kawashigi, one of his older clients, bares a striking resemblance to Reira and he sees her again after the two musicians ended their relationship. She lives near his parents apartment working as a stewardess and is the one that taught Shin "bad things". He and Ryouko were put under arrest for possession of marijuana which caused BLAST to withdraw from tour.
Yasushi Takagi (高木泰士, Takagi Yasushi?) a.k.a. Yasu (ヤス, Yasu?)
Voiced by: Yoshihisa Kawahara
** Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show**
He plays percussion and is the leader of Blast, usually handling the business partnerships and financial decisions needed for the band's success. His favorite cigarette brand is "Black Stones", from which the band got their name. He is also a lawyer in training, despite his "scary" appearance (clean shaven head, many earrings and dark glasses). He's the big brother figure for Nana O -and sometimes Nobu- and acted as Nana's "guardian" when she arrived in Tokyo. While he harbors some feelings for her, he baits Ren to rekindle their love for each other. In the past, he shared several ties with Trapnest's members. Yasu and Ren grew up in the same orphanage and remained close friends when Yasu was adopted. He dated Reira while in high school and was jealous of Takumi's success and influence on her, which he later relates as the reasons for their break up. Also, he's the oldest member of Blast which Nobu sometimes teases him about (by calling him "old man"). He is in a budding romance with Miu to the surprise of Ren and others -who were sure he would date Reira again.
Trapnest
Trapnest or Tranes (トラネス, Toranesu?) for short, is a popular band in the manga. Nana wants her own band to overtake Trapnest as the leading one in Japan.
Ren Honjo (本城蓮, Honjō Ren?) a.k.a Ren (レン, Ren?)
Voiced by: Hidenobu Kiuchi
Ren was an orphan who was abandoned outside a port warehouse as soon as he was born. According to Nobuo Terashima, the incident was even reported in the news. Subsequently, he stayed and gre up in the same orphanage as Yasushi and learned to take care of himself by the age of 12. He finds school boring and only likes to play guitar, which he practiced alone to the point of perfection. After Yasu was adopted by the Takagis, Ren frequently visited his friend, so much so that Yasu's foster mother offered to adopt him, an offer which he refused. The brand of the cigarettes he originally smoked was the 'Seven Stars'.
Later, he formed a band, Blast, with Yasu as leader/drummer, himself as bassist, Nobu as guitarist and Nana Osaki as lead vocals. He also fell in love with Nana O and was in a relationship with her. Ren is a big fan of the Sex Pistols; he participated in a tribute album to them, (Like his Idol, Sid Vicious, Ren wears a a chain with a lock around his neck that has the initial, "R" on it, to which only Nana has the key.) Nana had an image of a lotus tattooed on her upper arm in honor of him ("Ren" is a Japanese name for lotus). Blast was moderately successful in their town, but Ren doubted that they would make it big. He was offered to join Trapnest but declined because of Nana. With Yasu convincing him, after a while he then joined Trapnest as their lead guitarist. He is very popular and his music is well-received by fans. Their leader, Takumi Ichinose(Trapnest's bassist), is a good friend of Yasu as well. As he left Blast, he also tearfully broke up with Nana.
After Hachi (Nana Komatsu) learnt about his relationship with Nana, she invited Nana to Trapnest's concert back in her hometown. The couple made up, but Nana promised Ren that Blast would become more popular than Trapnest; their new bassist, Okazaki Shinichi, wanted to surpass Ren himself.
Although the couple had made up, Ren was still afraid that Yasu may become his rival for Nana. Also, Nana was uncomfortable with Trapnest's vocalist, Layla (Reira Serizawa), who seemed to be interested in Ren as well. To make matters worse, a tabloid magazine, SEARCH, was determined to expose the couple's relationship, as Blast's popularity had been rising steadily.
After his relationship with Nana was found out by SEARCH magazine, Ren proposed to Nana because he felt that Yasu was going to take Nana away from him. Nana accepted but they both felt unsure about the marriage.
In the manga, when Shin was caught smoking marijuana, Ren ended his relationship with Nana. Five years later Nana is rumored dead but Blast and Hachi are still looking for her. Hachi's only wish was that Nana and Ren be together, implying that they haven't reconciled since.
Personality
Beneath his idol image, Ren actually has problems of his own. He's addicted to drugs, much like his idol Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols. He was provided drugs by the band's president, Narita. As leader, Takumi knew about this and warned him of the consequences. However, other than that, he tolerated Ren's practice. However, Ren has been trying to quit his habit, cold turkey style.
On matters concerning the band, he trusts Takumi completely. Using the series' running gag of comparing Trapnest to an army, he said, "We (Trapnest) do not need soldiers who won't fight alongside Takumi."
However, he could also be playful, frequently teasing Nana and Layla. Another gag in the series is that in front of Nana, he would purposely get intimate with Shin.
Reira Serizawa (芹澤レイラ, Serizawa Reira?) a.k.a Reira (レイラ, Reira?)
Voiced by: Aya Hirano
Although her name is often romanized as "Reira", her actual name is "Layla", after the hit song by Eric Clapton's ot the same name. She is half-American, half-Japanese, and is the lead singer of Trapnest who writes the lyrics for Trapnest's songs..
Layla's friendship with her band comes all the way back to her elementary school days, starting with Takumi Ichinose. Reira grew up with Takumi and she still has deep unanswered feelings for him. The two met when Layla and her mother moved to Japan. Often criticized by the neighborhood because of her then-vague understanding of the Japanese language, Takumi was asked to befriend her. The two stuck together throughout their childhood, mostly teaching each other about their first language - Reira learned more about Japanese, while Takumi learned more about English.
Layla always showed an interest in singing at a young age, seen through her rendition of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time". During one of the first times she's shown singing this, she tells Takumi she loves him and gives a rather unexpected kiss. As this prompts him to be (not unexpectedly) put-off, Layla explains, though not very convincingly, that she often kissed (or was kissed by) anyone she respected or admired back in America, such as her parents or teacher. After being told that it's usually only reserved for "adults in love", Takumi reluctantly tells her it's fine if she does that, or holds hands with him, as long as it's only when they are alone.
Their friendship remains a close one until the beginning of middle/junior high school, when Layla (again) kisses him after he calls her cute, just like any other day. This time, however, he admits to her that they're getting older and she should only do those things with a boyfriend. Layla doesn't hesitate to ask him to take that place, but Takumi, somewhat unwittingly, rejects her coldly, saying he already has a girl of his own. Takumi begins to tell Layla it shouldn't be hard for her to find a nice boy herself, but by then she's gone from the room.
In between junior high and high school, she befriends both Naoki Fujieda and Yasushi Takagi, the latter of which was then in the band Brute with Ren Honjo. Layla became frustrated with Takumi only seeing their relationship as that of a brother and sister, or in her eyes, being nothing more than Takumi's "caged songbird". At one point in time, she even asks him what she is to him, but he doesn't respond. To deal with her unrequited feelings, she begins to date Yasu. Their relationship doesn't last, but it was a nice distraction from the pain.
Within Trapnest, she has at times been seen 'expressing' interest in both Takumi and Ren, drawing the ire of Nana Osaki. To make matters worse, the tabloid magazine, SEARCH mailed to Nana photographs of Ren and Layla together, though the shots were simply of an innocent trip the two took to their hometown. To stop the magazine from publishing the photos, Takumi decided to reveal his relationship with Hachi (Nana Komatsu), who initially was suspicious of Layla as well.
Around the time when her band was at its most popular, Layla decided to visit a nightclub in an attempt to pick up an escort for the night. In doing this, she meets and provokes the attention of Shinichi Okazaki, Blast's bassist. After spending a night with him, she continues their meetings. The two eventually decide (at first through Layla's wishes) that the relationship is more than that of a prostitute and client, and Shin requests she no longer pays him to stay the night.
Eventually, Takumi catches onto their situation. Knowing that the teen was underage, and also that Layla could possibly ruin her career, Takumi warned both parties to think of the possible consequences. Layla initially brushed off his idea, later realizing how potentially dangerous their meetings were, thanks to the media's recent capture of Layla and Ren together. Though in love with him, she reluctantly breaks up with Shin to protect Trapnest from further scandal, only to regret it and beg for forgiveness, possibly repairing their relationship. She asked if they could still contact each other but Shin, however, still a bit scared of Takumi's warning and not wanting to sully her reputation is reticent and urges her to break off entirely. It is unknown if they will reconcile though it is clear that they still love each other. The two have yet to get back together.
Personality
To fans, Layla is the archetypal idol: beautiful, charming and possessing a good voice. However, to her circle of friends, she's probably just as well known for being somewhat naive, overwhelmingly friendly, throwing child-like tantrums and making questionable demands. Together with Naoki, she's Trapnest's main source of laughter.
When Takumi became linked with Hachi, Layla ran out of the recording room throwing a fit, obviously caused by her conflicted feelings for him. However, it seemed to have cooled, seeing that she personally invited Hachi to her birthday party. As for Ren and Nana, Layla has the thought that Nana had misunderstood her; during a long distance call over to the UK, Nana realized that Layla was in Ren's room at midnight (local time).
Takumi Ichinose (一ノ瀬巧, Ichinose Takumi?) a.k.a Takumi (タクミ, Takumi?)
Voiced by: Toshiyuki Morikawa
The leader and bassist of Trapnest. He is quite handsome and has a reputation of being a playboy. Despite his raw sexual charisma, Takumi can also be cold and controlling workaholic. His favorite brand of cigarettes is "Gitanes". Coming from a family with an alcoholic and bitter father, he and his older sister learned maternal independence at a young age due to his mother being bed-ridden with illness in the hospital. He looked after Reira since they were children and always harbored a brother-like care for her. He ends up dating and sleeping with Hachi, which dubiously resulted in Hachi's pregnancy. Because of his family background, he refuses to leave her and their unborn child.
Naoki Fujieda (藤枝直樹, Fujieda Naoki?)
Voiced by: Anri Katsu
He is the drummer of Trapnest. Like Nobu in Black Stones, he's the "clueless", loud-mouthed member of his band. As with the rest of his bandmates, he's a friend of Yasu. His musical interest was awakened by Takumi during middle school. He hoped to achieve lots of attention from girls by playing in the band. He used to be the playboy of the band, tricking groupies to fund their cause, to which end is not explained.
Gaia Affiliated
Black Stones eventually sign a full contract with Gaia Records. Due to the tabloids over Nana and Ren's relationship, Blast members relocated to one of Gaia's facilities and voluntarily shared housing with other talented individuals under Gaia's name.
Gou Kanemoto (金本 豪 , Kanemoto Gou?)
Voiced by: Norio Wakamoto
The leader of the corporation which owns Gaia Records.
Ginpei Shiroboshi (諸星銀平, Shiroboshi Ginpei?)
Voiced by: Fumihiko Tachiki
Blast's manager. He talks in a very feminine way (unless angered) and he has a questionable interest in Yasu. In Nana's eyes, Ginpei is the second "baldie" related to Blast -the first being Yasu.
Mai Tsuzuki (都築舞, Tsuzuki Mai?) / "Misato Uehara" (上原美里, Uehara Misato?)
Voiced by: Mika Kanai
An ardent fan of Blast since its inception, Misato loves Nana and has befriended the band. However, "Uehara Misato" is not her true name. Misato/Mai claims that a fortune teller told her that if she used the name "Uehara Misato" she could become closer to Nana, but may have actually chosen it because it's the name of Nana's half-sister. Mai later joins the staff at Gaia, Blast's record label. She came to know about Nana and Blast when she read her grandfather's diary and discovered that he and Nana's grandmother were once lovers. Recent chapters reveal that Mai may actually have a secret she prefers not to reveal since the tabloids have discovered Nana's father's surname may actually be "Tsuzuki", which would imply that she, like Uehara Misato, is Nana's half-sister.
Miu Shinoda (篠田美雨, Shinoda Miu?) / Myū
Voiced by: Saeko Chiba
A placid and soft-spoken actress who shares a boarding house with Blast and Yuri. She is older than she looks (27) and her name is often mispronounced "Myū" by Nobu. Miu wears long sleeves to hide the scars on her wrists from self-mutilation. Also, in volume 11 (the volume where she first appears), it's shown that she's a very good mahjong player (she claimed that she learnt her skills by having special training for her role in a mahjong movie as a nameless rival). She is currently dating Yasu.
EXTRA......
** Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show**
Yuri Kousaka (香坂百合, Kōsaka Yuri?) / Asami Matsumoto (松本朝海, Matsumoto Asami?)
Voiced by: Reiko Suhou
A giggly, giddy AV idol (porn star) who shares a boarding house with Blast and Miu. She's currently dating Nobu. She has a large quota to pay off and is almost done paying it all off. Yuri was a teenage runaway before she starred in adult videos, and she has financial problems due to her sleazy manager and her own fickle nature. Her real name is "Asami Matsumoto".
Yamagishi (山岸, Yamagishi?)
Voiced by: Takaya Kuroda
The security guard who guards the hostel where Blast stays in. He has the look of a gangster, and frequently sleeps at his post.
Takafumi Kawano (川野高文, Kawano Takafumi?)
One of Gaia's recording producers and the first to scout for Blast in Tokyo. He doesn't know much about punk or rock but is throughly impressed with the band's charm and Nana's charisma. He is kind-hearted and fully believes in Blast's success despite skepticism from executives and his peers. Though high enough in the company to have influence, he was unaware of Gaia's leak to the scandal surrounding Nana. Originally, he declined to sign Blast an official contract as the pay Gaia was willing to compensate for each member would have been less than they deserved. Yasu, however, privately convinced him that dreams were more important and he sealed the deal.
Shion (詩音, Shion?)
President to Blast's Private Fan Club and a long-time fan of Yasu since his days in Brute. She keeps in contact with Mai and divides the fans by their interests in the members. Her devotion to Yasu is unfailing and she relays any news outside of Gaia's influence to him. When questioned about her financial situation, she replied to have some dependency from her rich "father" - though he is not biological. First seen in the story as a bobcut-haired groupie, later as a platinum blonde during her late teens, and re-introduced with curled black hair as an adult; Shion's only constant traits include the mole underneath her left eye and the tattoo on her right arm.
Hachi's Relatives and Acquaintances
People who have interacted with Nana K. personally at given times of her life. They don't address her with her nickname, Hachi, and have deeply affected her perceptions on certain situations. As they aren't deeply involved with the two bands, she will often reflect on her experiences with them for reassurance when she is in doubt of her simultaneous loyalties to Blast and Trapnest.
Nami Komatsu (小松奈美, Komatsu Nami?)
Hachi's younger sister, and the youngest in the Komatsu household, she has the appearance of a ganguro girl because of her suntan and bleached hair. Nami is very outgoing and loud, and is a Trapnest fan.
Nao Komatsu (小松奈緒, Komatsu Nao?)
Hachi's older sister, who looks quite a bit like Natsuko. She is married, but still lives near the Komatsu family home.
Natsuko Komatsu (小松奈津子, Komatsu Natsuko?)
Hachi's mother. Kind and understanding, she is a model mother to her daughters, and Nana Osaki considers Natsuko to be cool. Hachi, however finds it weird since she thought that her family is nothing but 'normal.'
Satsuki Ichinose (一ノ瀬皐, Ichinose Satsuki?)
Voiced by: Yuko Katou
The daughter of Nana Komatsu. Not much known about her, and she makes only a few appearances later in the series. When she appears, she is 6 years old (presumably showing the future outlook of the story). During her pregnancy, Hachi and Takumi unofficially called her 'Sachiko'. It is not known if she is truly Takumi's or Nobu's child, but bears a striking resemblance to Takumi, with black hair and hazel eyes. She is revealed to have a crush on Shin, though his reciprocation (or even his knowledge of her feelings) is unlikely.
Junko Saotome (早乙女淳子, Saotome Junko?)
Voiced by: Takako Honda
Hachi's sensible, no-nonsense best friend. Junko is much more emotionally mature than Hachi and often pushes her to be more independent and responsible. She's the host of the omake (bonus) section at the end of each manga volume, reading fan mail and displaying fan art. She's often called "Jun-chan" by Hachi.
Kyosuke Takakura (高倉京助, Takakura Kyosuke?)
Voiced by: Junichi Suwabe
Junko's boyfriend who currently shares an apartment with her. He's also good friends with Hachi and Shoji. His laid-back attitude to life may deem him a slacker in the eyes of many, but he's actually quite perceptive and he coddles Hachi more than Junko would like. Both him and Junko are studying to become artists (his art being Romantic and hers being Post-Modernistic).
Shoji Endo (遠藤章司, Endō Shōji?)
Voiced by: Hiroki Takahashi
He is Hachi's ex-boyfriend. He is a struggling art student and works as a waiter. He met Hachi through his old friend, Junko, and Hachi originally moved to Tokyo to be closer to him. However, their relationship gradually cooled and he cheated on her with Sachiko, a co-worker and classmate. Though he still has feelings for her, he leaves Hachi for Sachiko. They meet by chance some time later at Jackson Hole and they part in bitter-sweet acquiescence.
Sachiko Kawamura (川村幸子, Kawamura Sachiko?)
Voiced by: Megumi Kojima
Shoji's sweet-natured girlfriend. She works at the same restaurant as Shoji. Early on in the manga, Hachi once dreamt of Shoji two-timing her with a buxom, Prada-loving city girl named Sachiko (she thought of the name randomly). Ominously, it later turned out to be true, though the real Sachiko is nothing like "virtual" Sachiko. Interestingly, Hachi also plays with the idea of naming her unborn daughter Sachiko.
Takashi Asano (浅野崇, Asano Takashi?)
Voiced by: Hideyuki Tanaka
Hachi's first lover. A handsome, older, married man, Asano carried on a secret affair with Hachi that ended when he was abruptly transferred to Tokyo. Though Hachi believed that she was in love with him, she made the painful realization that he saw her as merely a "fling". Hachi encounters him again in Tokyo and, after resolving her own personal issues with him, tells him to stop cheating on his wife.
[edit] Cookie Music
Trapnest's official record label which is also a homage to the magazine that serialized the manga. Unlike Blast, members are assigned with more managers who ensure that they meet their appointments and affirm each member's status.
Mitsuru Narita (成田 充, Narita Mitsuru?)
Voiced by: Sho Hayami
The head of Cookie Music, Narita is flamboyant, but reasonably talented with music. He works frequently with Takumi when it comes to Trapnest's music and marketing strategies.
Hideki Kasai (笠井秀樹, Kasai Hideki?)
Trapnest's director. He is easily moved by tales of romanticism and love. Though he is supposed to direct during recordings, he usually sets appointments or sends requests to the president of the company, leaving all artistic direction in Takumi's hands.
Kinoshita (木下, Kinoshita?)
One of Trapnest's assistants. Occasionally, he will check on Ren and take him to recordings. He loves the quality of Ren's cars.
Mari (マリ, Mari?)
Voiced by: Megumi Toyoguchi
Reira's personal assistant and manager. She is intelligent and has experience as a student at a law university.
Takeda (竹田, Takeda?)
Assistant in charge of Trapnest's publicity. Out of the assistants mentioned so far, he is the one that Takumi trusts the most. Members of the band often address him as "Take-chan".
Search Magazine
A magazine that shares similar characteristics to the Japanese magazine, Friday. They are a part of the "paparazzi" that track both bands. When Blast was becoming popular, they were given a leak that connected Nana O with Ren and haven't stopped from spreading negative (and sometimes false) information about them.
Kudo (工藤, Kudo?)
Voiced by: Masahiko Tanaka
The editor in charge of the the tabloids surrounding Blast and Trapnest. According to Arai, he is supposed to answer to a higher supervisor, Yokoyama, but he chooses to be more impetuous in his actions. He employs Miyake and Kurada to investigate in his place.
Yoshiyuki Arai (新井良行, Arai Yoshiyuki?)
Search magazine's editor-in-chief. He has already been married for 2 years. He is often the one to chide Kudo for his brash methods of investigations.
Minoru Kurada (倉田稔, Kurada Minoru?)
Voiced by: Susumu Chiba
Photographer hired by Search magazine to track Nana O and Ren. He has conflicting opinions with his employer, Kudou, and claims that once he sees a face, he will never forget it. Curiously, after investigating Nana at a later unspecified time, he reports that "Nana died at that sea". The depth of these words have yet to be explained.
Miyake (三宅, Miyake?)
Kurada's partner in crime who frequently stalks Nana O for a private interview. Yasu punched him on one occasion, which later lead to a negative article about Yasu being published in their magazine. He finds nothing wrong about pestering the couple, thinking that their relationship is fragile to begin with.
Fumie Sugiwara (菅原文江, Sugiwara Fumie?)
The only woman in the editorial group. She does scold her peers for their cruelty, but also finds their harassments of Nana O and Ren as testing their love for one another.
Others
Chikage Fujimoto (藤本千景, Fujimoto Chikage?)
She is the real Misato's friend, a Blast and Shinichi's fan. She was among the trio selected to represent Kansai at Blast's special fan gathering.
Keiichi Mizukoshi (水越誠一, Mizukoshi Keiichi?)
Voiced by: Kenji Hamada
Owner to a cheap vintage furniture and clothing store near both Nana's apartment in Tokyo. He hired Hachi but soon closed the store to move back home. He later sends her a postcard with a wedding photo with him and his bride (a childhood friend), ironic to Hachi's lament at the time.
Ms. Sakagami (坂上-様, Sakagami-san?)
Voiced by: Shinohara Emi
A 38-year old woman who is Nana's boss at her new job at the magazine production industry. She is crude and scornful, and will not hesitate to throw insults at all sorts of minor imperfections that Nana has made.
Koichi Sato (佐藤公一, Satō Koichi?)
Voiced by: Keisuke Fujii
A waiter at the Jackson's Burger restaurant. He is friendly with Hachi, Junko, and Shoji, who all curiously address him by his full name.
Misato Uehara (上原美里, Uehara Misato?) (real Misato Uehara)
Nana Osaki's half-sister who appears before Nana at a special "thank you" concert for Blast's fans. She lives in Osaka, her parents own an okonomiyaki shop. She is also known as '(Misato) Number Two' by Nana. Though she bares a striking similarity to her, she is unaware of her true relationship with Nana and ironically became one of her newer devoted fans. Mai has said that it is not a good idea for Nana and Misato to become too close because they share the same mother. Misato's mother abandonned Nana O when she was a child to her grandmother.
