Namie Amuro (安室奈美恵, Amuro Namie, born September 20, 1977) is a Japanese pop singer and occasional songwriter, of Ryukyuan and Italian ancestry. She is noted for her westernized music and popularized fashion.Fashion such as her signature knee-high boots (also know as FMB's ^^) which got her the #1 spot on Oricon-Style's Boots Beauty Poll. With that her followers came to be nicknamed Amurā (Amurer in English).Amuro is often accredited for the creation of Ganguro which is said to be an offspring of the Amura boom.Referred to as the "Queen of J-pop", Amuro has transcended fads and controversy to become one of Japan's most prolific and enduring musical acts.
Debuting in 1992 as part of the quintet Super Monkey's, she later debuted solo in 1995 to phenomenal success with producer Tetsuya Komuro. Severing her ties with Komuro in 2001, Amuro has reestablished herself as a R&B artist. Her latest album, PLAY (2007) debuted at #1. She has nine #1 singles, five of which have sold over a million copies. Namie Amuro is one of the most popular and infuential Japanese singers and since her solo debut in 1995, she has sold over 28 millions records. In March 2006, Oricon published an article stating that Namie had sold approximately 15,423,000 singles domestically, making her the second highest selling female artist in terms of singles.
She ties with three other artists (Pink Lady, Hikaru Utada & Ayumi Hamasaki) to have most million selling singles,5, but she is the only one in JAPAN MUSIC HISTORY with sales up to 2 million copies of a single by a solo artist (Can You Celebrate? single:2,296,200 copies sold).
Namie Amuro is Japanese pop's most resilient idol, bouncing back from hurdles that have felled lesser J-pop idols (namely raising a family and divorce) to remain on top.
Over a decade since her musical debut, Amuro has remained one of the longest surviving popular female acts in Japan. She is the only Japanese female artist to have achieved a top 10 single each year for 13 consecutive years. She also continues to successfully combat social stigma as a now divorced working single mother.
And like any J-pop starlet worth a theme song to a hit anime movie, Amuro has built up a solid rapport with her fans through her sense of style as much as for her music, which is essentially R&B-influenced pop, harder edged and more risqué than that of her rival Ayumi Hamasaki.
