Yamashita Tomohisa entered Johnny's Entertainment at age 11 in September of 1996. From there he became a very popular and well recognised Junior, eventually coming to be the leader of the Juniors. He was a member of the group B.I.G. as well as Four Tops, the former hosts of the The Shounen Club television program. He was pulled from Four Tops into NEWS when the group was formed in 2003.
In NEWS, Yamashita is often in the front and center as he is the most popular member in NEWS. Despite this attention he maintains a silly personality which occasionally prompts his band mates to question whether he is actually human or not. However he only has this personality among his close friends, otherwise he has been known to be quiet but civil around people he doesn't know. He has been described by his fellow band mates and JE friends as manly and mysterious. He is very caring and even pays for his sisters school tuition in replacment of his mother. He has said that he wants to buy his mother her own house. He is a very unique idol as he almost never smiles in pictures because he 'doesn't know how to' although recently he has been smiling quite alot. He comes across very manly and scary, but he is the exact opposite.
Yamashita is good friends with Akanishi Jin of KAT-TUN and Jin's family as well as Nishikido Ryo, Shirota Yuu of D-Boys, and Ikuta Toma, formerly of Four Tops.
In 2005 he appeared in the dorama Nobuta wo Produce with KAT-TUN's Kamenashi Kazuya. The two released a single as the duet Shuuji to Akira acting as their characters from the drama.
During NEWS's hiatus Yamashita released a solo single called Daite Senorita for the dorama Kurosagi which sold remarkably well for a solo release. He is also currently enrolled in Meiji University pursuing a degree in Business and he will be graduating in September 2008. He also became a regular columnist of Seventeen Magazine.
In summer of 2006 he was put into the promotional group Kitty GYM where he and the Thai duo Golf & Mike were the principal members. They had a hit single (No.1 in the Oricon Charts) called Fever to Future.

Entering Johnny's Entertainment on the 21st of January 2001, Koyama started out with the unit B.A.D. which stands for Beautiful American Dream. It is also the unit where he met fellow NEWS band mate Kato Shigeaki, who would soon to be his best friend and band mate for the years to follow. His second unit as a junior was B.B.D. which at first stood for Bad Boys Dancing, but was later changed to Best Beat Dancing. In October 2001, he was chosen as a member of Domoto Koichi's project, J Support, along side fellow NEWS members Kusano Hironori and Kato Shigeaki. It was in this unit that Koyama started out as an announcer for shows such as the Ya-Ya-yah Show, and this has carried through to NEWS, which he joined in September 2003.
Koyama is the oldest member of NEWS and is often seen as the mother figure of the group. He is well known for his single eyelids and is often teased about them. He, amongst other Johnny's members, completed his education and graduated from Meiji University's Arts & Humanities facility with Honors. During NEWS' hiatus, he worked in his parent's Ramen shop along with working as host for Shounen Club and guest appearances in doramas such as Yamashita Tomohisa's Kurosagi.

Kato Shigeaki joined Johnny's Entertainment in April of 1999 and was in the unit J-Support a.k.a K.K.Kity before he was selected to be in NEWS. He is often recognized as the smartest member of NEWS and also the one with the least self-confidence. He plays guitar and has composed a few songs with Yamashita Tomohisa and Tegoshi Yuya.
Shige is an avid writer and writes his blog from the perspective of a fictional cat named Wagahai. This is in parody of the popular book by Natsume Soseki entitled "Wagahai wa Neko de Aru" or I Am a Cat. Currently he is attending Aoyama University studying law.
He loves cats, but sadly, is allergic. Therefore, his J-web entries are written from his "imaginary" cat Wagahai's point of view. In some way or another, Wagahai mentions Koyama and Koyama's cat Nyanta. They manage to set up "play dates" together. The name "Wagahai" probably pays homage to the famous Japanese novel "Wagahai wa neko de aru" (I Am a Cat) by Natsume Sōseki.
Kato Shigeaki, who is usually called "Shige", became a member of NEWS, together with Koyama Keiichiro and Kusano Hironori, after they were all in K.K.Kity, one of the Johnny's Jr. groups.
For quite a while he was known as the most "underloved" and "underpromoted" member of NEWS, comparing to other members. Even though he is considered as the most intelligent and smart person among members, he seemed to rarely get chances to prove his abilities. However, after the return of NEWS, he has gradually been promoted and become more popular with changes in his appearance.

Tegoshi entered Johnny's during December 2002. He participated in various Johnny's Junior activities until, ten months later, he debuted as a part of NEWS. At the time of his debut, he was almost completely unknown. Even most of the members did not know who he was.However, he gained popularity with his singing. He also started in acting and gained more roles in various Japanese dramas. He also hosted his own radio show, "Tegoshi Yuya's What a Wonderful Music."
During NEWS's hiatus in 2006, he and bandmate Takahisa Masuda formed the duo Tegomass. They released the single "Miso Soup" in Sweden, recorded entirely in English, that reached #12 on the Swedish charts. In December of 2006, they released the Japanese version of "Miso Soup" in Japan.Tegoshi is currently pursuing his education at Waseda University through Online courses, as his schedule would not permit him to attend lectures regularly. He is aiming for a major in Human Sciences.
