Tokyo Area Schools:
Seishun Gakuen School

This school is famous for its talented tennis club, thus the series' leading protagonist, Ryoma Echizen, is enrolled into the school by his father, Nanjiro Echizen, a former professional tennis player and also a former student of Seigaku.

Fudomine Middle School
Fudomine Junior High is introduced as an unseeded, unknown school, as well as the only public school in the line-up (all the others, Seigaku included, are private academies). Dark rumors surround the tennis team, as the year before the team was forced to withdraw over an "incident involving violence" and before that the team was relatively unremarkable.

Yamabuki Middle School
Yamabuki Middle School first appear in the semi-finals of the Prefecturals Tournament Arc, facing Fudomine Middle School. They easily beat Fudomine, due to the fact the members of the Fudomine team were in a car wreck before the match. They then play Seishun Academy Middle School. Seishun beats them with a match score of 3-1. They then advance to the Kantou tournament, but lose to Fudomine in the quarterfinals. They still win 5th place, getting them into Nationals, but they lose in the early rounds.

Midoriyama
Despite their confidence, Midoriyama never became a factor in their meeting with Seishun Gakuen during the second round of the Kantou Tournament, where the eventual champion comfortably defeated the all-second-year team in straight sets. Fortunately, Midoriyama managed to secure one of the two consolation spots for the Nationals. Although the team boosts a total of three coaches, including a professional tennis player with several tour titles under his belt, Midoriyama is possibly the weakest of this year's six National qualifiers from Kantou. Not surprisingly, Midoriyama was eliminated in the first round of the Nationals.

Rokkaku has a big playground incorporated into it that is always open to the neighborhood kids. Their tennis courts are right next to this playground, exposing the children to tennis at a very young age so that they can eventually join the tennis team as they enter the school. Their manager, an old man of few words who is always called "Oji" on the series, is a racquet manufacturer who creates special wooden racquets for his players, taking into consideration their skills and personality.

Shitenhouji

Shitenhouji is one of the strongest teams from Kansai. Although they lost to Rikkai Dai Fuzoku in semifinals, the consensus is that they gave Rikkai a much tougher fight than Makinofuji Gakuin did in the finals. While Makinofuji and last year's Best 4 Shishigaku tumbled out in their first matches this year, Shitenhouji, boosted by the new additions of Shishigaku's Chitose Senri and super rookie Tooyama Kintarou, remained a top contender for the National title. Unfortunately, Shitenhouji was unable to exceed last year's performance and ended another year at the semifinals.

Higa

For the past 26 years, no team from Okinawa has made it past the Kyuushuu Tournament, but the run of misfortune finally ended this year with the surge of a new powerhouse, Higa. Under the leadership of Kite Eishirou, Higa dominated its regional tournament, dethroning Shishigaku, last year's National semifinalist. The Higa players are experts in Okinawan martial arts, which is incorporated into their tennis. Their trademark technique is the Shukuchihou, developed by martial artists to sneak up on the enemies. By running without kicking the ground and using the Earth's gravity, the martial artists use faster steps instead of letting their steps fall naturally. Higa players attempted to injure their opponent's advisor.

Murigaoka
Murigaoka is a school famous for its data collection; they visit opposing schools to videotape their practice, which they would later analyze in order to determine their weaknesses. Their captain and vice-captain tried to gather information on Seigaku's Kaidoh Kaoru and Rikkai's Yagyuu Hiroshi in an unofficial match, but the plan backfires since the latter two tricks them by secretly switching identities. Their team is later easily defeated by Rikkai in the Nationals.

Other Team: AMERICAN TEAM:
Richard Baker -
is the American team's extremely strict coach who view tennis as a great show, and his pupils as the actors and pawns for success. He scouted several talented youngsters, sometimes getting them out of abusive environments, and trained them for his tennis talent "show".
Kevin Smith -
is the captain of the American team participating in the US/Japan Goodwill Games in the anime. He appears in Japan weeks before the tournament to settle a rival feud that began with his father, George Smith, and Ryoma's father, Nanjiro Echizen. Fifteen years ago, Nanjiro greatly humiliated George as a punishment for mistreating his pupils, one of them being Ryoma's mother Rinko. The humiliation damaged George's ego and career, and he retaliated by training him very strictly, as well as becoming an alcoholic. Kevin sees his father as worthless because of this, and decides to defeat Ryoma to prove himself to the world. He plays a highly destructive form of tennis and injures other players, most notably Jin Akutsu of Yamabuki. Kevin took up tennis after he saw Ryoma win the American Junior Tennis Tournament. Believing that he is different from his dad, he focused solely on defeating Ryoma, and watched tapes of Ryoma's matches, except for the one against Genichirou Sanada.
Arnold Ignashov -
After immigrating to the United States from East Germany as a child, He became disillusioned and turned to life as a street punk. After he was beaten up, he discovered a magazine with an article about Baker training athletes and becomes involved with his program with the help of his friend, Aaron Harrison. According to Baker, Arnold has never lost in an official match; part of this is due to his determination to not want to return to his former 'hellish' life. He is called a tennis machine because of his accuracy and the ability to figure out his opponent's shots, and then countering them.
Bobby Max -
Nicknamed the 'Beast Bulldozer', He is the tallest and most muscularly developed of his fellow teammates. A former skilled baseball, basketball, and American football player, He often struggles to control his temper and poor sportsmanship, which have gotten him banned from most sports in his school. Baker convinces Bobby to try tennis after he causes his school's football team to be suspended. Bobby continues to struggle within the game with his poor sportsmanship. He argues with the referee over every point Sengoku scores, and nearly destroys his racquet after a call. Baker spends most of the match trying to calm Bobby's temper. However, his efforts are in vain after neither player can continue the match, and the game is declared a "No Game".
Tom Griffy -
is the older brother, as well as the doubles partner of Terry Griffy. As a child, He and Terry were forced to live in their cruel aunt's farmhouse following the death of their parents. They supported themselves and their aunt by collecting items from the garbage that could be salvaged and resold; Baker discovered Tom and Terry being exploited by his aunt to perform trick tennis shots and stunts for her own profit, reaching an agreement with the woman and "rescuing" the brothers from her abuse.
Terry Griffy -
is the younger brother, as well as the doubles partner of Tom Griffy. While living with his brother under the strict and often cruel hand of their Aunt, Terry finds a pair of tennis racquets that fuel their shared interest in tennis. Terry favors an acrobatic style of play, similar to Eiji Kikumaru of Seigaku. His looks are very feminine, thus he is idolized by many girls.
Billy Cassidy -
He grew up on a ranch in an unknown city in the American West. His family moved to Los Angeles when he was 12, and he was never able to adapt well to "city life." He began to play tennis to become a person worthy of attention to the cute and sweet girl he fell in love with at first sight, Stephanie, the daughter of one of Baker's sponsors. His skills include the Bull Rope serve and the Shot Gun Volley.
Michael Lee -
is the only son of a successful businessman, and is a United States immigrant. His father's personal philosophies of hard work and success shaped Michael's personality and tennis play.
Other Characters:
Mamoru Inoue -
A journalist for the Monthly Tennis magazine, Inoue follows and reports on the Seigaku team's progress. He is also an amateur tennis player, as well as being a big fan of Nanjiro Echizen.
Saori Shiba -
A photographer for the Monthly Tennis magazine who follows the Seigaku team with Inoue. She's attractive, outspoken and somewhat child-like; since she's still new to tennis, Inoue frequently has to explain the rules to her.
Nanako Meino:
is a student at a local Tokyo college, and currently lives with her relatives, the Echizen family. She plays the role of an elder sibling figure to Ryoma, who is an only child, and she helps him and the other Echizens with their daily lives. She is sweet-tempered, very polite, loyal, and devoted, but she is not completely devoid of a stronger side. She is known to be rather assertive and sarcastic as well as not afraid to lash out when she has to, the main victim being her uncle, Nanjiro Echizen. She was timid, shy, and an easy target for bullies, much like Sakuno Ryuuzaki.
Rinko Echizen -
Ryoma's mother and Nanjiro's wife. Her maiden name is Rinko Takeuchi. She is sweet and compliant but quite strong-willed as well, always calm in any situation. She works as an attorney, which has been her long-time dream. Though she is shown in flashbacks, her face is never shown during the current timeline.
Sasabe -
A local bully, who occasionally encounters Ryoma and his friends. He is first introduced when he boasts about his knowledge of the different types of tennis grip, which is when Ryoma corrects his knowledge. He is also the first person in the series to play a match against Ryoma, whom he loses to. His father, who has an attitude similar to his son, also encounters Ryoma and his friends on a few occasions.
Sumire Ryuuzaki:
Sumire is the coach of Seigaku's tennis club, as well as one of the school's math teachers. It was thanks to her that Nanjiro Echizen was able to develop his skills 25 years ago. She also has a sort-of rivalry with her ex-mentor, Mikiya Banda a.k.a. Banji, who is the coach for Yamabuki. Having a whole team of "raccoons and foxes" (in her own words) is not easy. She is always there to yell, but is also considered to be a great and reliable coach. She has a good relationship with her regulars, and participates in their recreational group activities: the bowling reunion and the beach-volley mini-tournament with Rokkaku Middle School. Even during the Nationals, Ryuzaki showed her hard hand as a coach when she confronted Saotome Harumi, Higa Middle School's coach, about how a real coach should be.
For the Prince of Tennis live action movie, Ryuzaki's whole personality and back story was changed. Instead of being a middle-aged teacher and ex-coach to Nanjiro Echizen, she was a young and more cheerful woman as well as Nanjiro's former classmate. She was played by the popular singer Hitomi Shimatani.
Nanjiro Echizen:
is the father of the series' protagonist Ryoma Echizen. He is also known as 'Samurai Nanjiro' for his invincible tennis skills during his earlier years as a professional tennis player. During his Junior high years, he was trained by the current coach of the Seigaku Tennis Club, Sumire Ryuzaki. It was also in his high school life that Ryuzaki discovered Nanjiro's natural talent (when he discovered 'nitōryū' all by himself) in Tennis. After leaving Japan and going pro, he remained undefeated and was only one more opponent away to earning a Grand Slam title before he unexpectedly decided to retire.
Yūdai Yamato -
A former Seigaku tennis captain from the days when Kunimitsu Tezuka and the other actual seniors were freshmen. He had a match against Tezuka and lost. Yamato is the one who convinced Tezuka to stay in the tennis club as Seigaku's pillar of support, calming him down when he was on the verge of quitting after being injured. Eccentric, insightful and gentle, Yamato has a unique "way" of explaining things that even Sumire Ryuzaki has trouble understanding him.
Masashi Arai -
is an upperclassman at Seigaku. Although not yet a regular, Arai is seemingly the best reserve player on the team, and may sooner or later become a regular himself. He is known for his hotheadedness, and hazing of weaker players. In the anime, when Momoshiro and Kaido are late for a match, he and Kawamura are selected to get ready if they do not show up in time. Arai gets nervous and faints, but the two show up at the last moment.
Satoshi Horio -
He is a first year student and claims to know everything about tennis. He constantly brags about his "two years of tennis experience", but is, in fact, a less than average player. He often explains or tries to explain to his first year friends key words, rules, and techniques when either Inui or Inoue are not around to do so. He has an older cousin named Junpei, who has "two years of biking experience" and helps Kintarō Tooyama from Shitenhōji to reach Tokyo.
Kachiro Kato -
is a part of the "freshman trio". He hangs around a lot with Satoshi Horio and Katsuo Mizuno. Although he is not very good at tennis he thoroughly supports the Seishun team. He has a father who coaches at an expensive tennis club and is seen in the manga to pick up habits that his father has, such as using the word "damn". Kachiro once pretended to be Kaidoh (wearing his bandana), Momoshiro (with his hair changed) and Kawamura (acting all fired up when holding a racquet) when Kaidoh and Momoshiro almost missed the deadline in the Kantou finals.
Though he is normally polite and meek, Kachiro believes strongly in justice and fights to the end to defend his beliefs. In the anime, he has once stood up to Arai and two other non-regular upperclassmen, who had wished ill of the Seishun regulars so that they could become regulars themselves. He played Arai and lost, but during this game he showed a lot of potential and faith in the regulars. Arai himself was very impressed and later apologized to Kachiro. In another episode, he was used as a back-up plan to fill in for the regulars that have not shown up yet.
Katsuo Mizuno:
As a part of the "freshman trio", he does not stand out very much in the anime and manga, but he bears a strong resemblance to the vice-captain of Seigaku's Tennis Club, Shuichiro Oishi. Because of this resemblance, Eiji and Momoshiro once put a swimming cap on Katsuo and used a marker to try to disguise him as Oishi. Katsuo has shown that he has a knack for cooking in the training camp episodes before the finals against Rikkai Dai when he showed his knife skills and making of curry. In the ending of the manga, sophomore Katsuo is shown with longer hair.
Sakuno Ryuuzaki -
The first year granddaughter of coach Ryuzaki, and also an admirer of Ryoma Echizen, and a recent member of the Seigaku tennis team for girls. Sakuno is a kind, clumsy and quiet girl with very long hair kept in twin braids, who almost always seems to worry about Ryoma and the others. She started playing tennis after she saw Ryoma playing, and her progress differs in the anime from the manga; in the anime her lack of skill is a recurring gag, while in the manga, she is good enough to be seen as a promising player and even future regular.
Tomoka Osakada:
Unlike her best friend Sakuno, who refers to her as "Tomo-chan", Tomoka is outspoken, strong willed, and bossy. She is easy to spot in the crowd thanks to her brown hair kept in ponytails, her rather boyish clothing style (aside from her school uniform) is rarely seen wearing skirts or dresses, and a mole under her right eye. Tomoka met Ryoma Echizen after witnessing his unofficial match with Takeshi Momoshiro in the Seigaku grounds and immediately developed a great admiration for him, to the point of becoming his self-appointed "number one fan girl", referring to him as "Ryoma-sama" (roughly translated as "Prince Ryoma") and creating his fan club, which she leads. However, unlike Sakuno's own admiration for Ryoma, Tomoka's attitude towards him comes more from typical teenage idol worship, inspired by his good looks and tennis skills, rather than proper romantic feelings.
She loudly and faithfully cheers for Ryoma and the Seigaku team, no matter how hard things get for them, and is also very protective of her friends; on the other hand, she can be somewhat immature, pushy, shallow, and even cruel at times, especially towards her fellow first year, Satoshi Horio.
