Story:
The series is primarily set in Tokyo. Ryoma Echizen, a tennis prodigy, attends Seishun Academy (Seishun Gakuen), or Seigaku for short, a private school famous for it's strong tennis club and talented players. Ryoma quickly defeats numerous upperclassmen shortly after entrance to secure himself a spot as one of the team's regulars. In pursuit of their ultimate goal of winning the all-Japan junior high school tennis championship, members of the team make new friends while learning and mastering increasingly complex techniques. Ryoma also begins to develop his own style of tennis, and eventually realizes what the sport really means to him.




MAIN CHARACTERS:

Echizen Ryoma

The protagonist of the series. Ryoma is the son of Nanjiro Echizen, who was formerly known as "Samurai Nanjiro" during his days as a professional tennis player. He makes his first appearance when he criticizes a high school student about his tennis knowledge in a subway. Ryoma had already earned notoriety through winning four consecutive titles in the American Junior Tennis tournaments – all in a little over a year. Due to his nearly invincible tennis play, Ryoma has earned the label 'prodigy'. He is 12 years old =) His looks and confidence make him highly popular with ladies, although he seems not to notice/care, having his focus exclusively on tennis. He always says: "Mada Mada Dane" which in english means "You still have lots more to work on, You still have a long way to go, Still no good, No not yet, It's not over yet..." depending on the situation.


Tezuka Kunimitsu

Tezuka is the captain of the tennis club. He is 14 years old. He is an incredibly talented player and went to Nationals the year before the series took place. Tezuka is serious about everything he does, and he is very strict — one of his trademark phrases is Yudan sezu ni ikō which in english means "Don't let your guard down." Still, he is fair and sticks to his word; if the rules are broken, he punishes everyone, including the regulars. He would often make the entire team run laps when they break the rules - a thing which he inherited from Yūdai Yamato.


Fuji Syusuke

Fuji is a third year student at Seishun Academy and is also at the age of 14. He is given the title "genius" (tensai) due to his tactical skill on the tennis court. Fuji is often seen with a calm and content expression on his face, with his eyes seemingly closed from lightly smiling. However, when he is excited, provoked, playing seriously or when he is chocked over something, Fuji reveals his sharp eyes.


Kikumaru Eiji

Kikumaru is part of the "Golden Pair," along with Shuichiro Oishi. He is 14 years old. Using his acrobatic play, he can return almost any ball, even those that seem out of human reach. Eiji is also known to have the sharpest vision on the team, with an exceptional talent for seeing fast moving objects.


Oishi Shuichiro

Oishi is the vice-captain of the tennis club. Along with Eiji Kikumaru, he is part of Seigaku's "Golden Pair," a doubles team that made it to Nationals the year before the series takes place. Oishi is a very responsible character and cares deeply about the team. As his friend he is also 14 years old.


Momoshiro Takeshi

Momoshiro is known as Seigaku's number one rascal. As the player who is the most open and friendly with everyone, Momoshiro is connected to everyone on the team on some level. He really wants to be liked by everyone, which is evident by his preference to be called "Momo-chan," even by the freshmen. As a compromise, some of the freshman call him "Momo-chan-senpai" while the third years call him by "Momo." He is one year older than Echizen, 13. Momoshiro and Kaidoh are eternal rivals, and constantly try to out-do each other. Surprisingly enough, this makes them efficient as a doubles pair, because the two rivals know each other so well.


Kaido Kaoru

Kaido's nickname is "Viper" (mamushi) which fits him well as his signature move is the "Snake Shot," a curving forehand that keeps his opponents running. He wears a bandana and often exhales, making a sound similar to a snake. He is also 13 as Momo is.. Kaido does not like his nickname, and often reacts badly when called that within earshot. He and Momo are rivals.


Inui Sadaharu

Inui is a highly intelligent player. He plays what he calls "Data Tennis," which involves collecting and analyzing data for a player in order to determine their weaknesses. Inui is 14 years old. He is even able to determine the exact probability of certain shots being successful. He also uses his data to create exercise programs for the team (and collects data from everyone at the same time). He also loves to come up with all kinds of "Inui-juices" a disgusting health drink which is used as punishment etc.


Kawamura Takashi

Kawamura is a soft-spoken person off the court, very gentle and shy, though still outspoken and stubborn when he takes a decision. However, he becomes extremely aggressive and loud once he grabs his racket, or any racket. This change in his personality is marked by him shouting "Burning!!!" Kawamura is also 14 years old.


Sumire Ryuzaki
Ryuzaki is the coach of Seigaku's tennis club, as well as one of the school's math teachers. It was thanks to her that Nanjiro Echizen was able to develop his skills 25 years ago. Having a whole team of "raccoons and foxes" (in her own words) is not easy. She is always there to yell, but is also considered to be a great and reliable coach. She has a good relationship with her regulars, and participates in their recreational group activities: the bowling reunion and the beach-volley mini-tournament with Rokkaku Middle School.
