In the year 2022, the Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (VRMMORPG), Sword Art Online (SAO), is released. With the Nerve Gear, a virtual reality helmet that stimulates the user's five senses via their brain, players can experience and control their in-game characters with their minds. On November 6, 2022, all the players log in for the first time, and subsequently discover that they are unable to log out. They are then informed by Kayaba Akihiko, the creator of SAO, that if they wish to be free, they must reach the 100th floor of the game's tower and defeat the final boss. However, if their avatars die in-game, their bodies will also die in the real world.

One of the lucky 1000 players accepted into the beta, Kirito logs hundreds of hours of playtime. He, along with the other top players, were able to reach the eighth floor before the beta had ended.

Shortly after logging in to the now fully released SAO, Kirito is stopped by a stranger. Klein, a new guy, asks for his help in learning how to play. After befriending each other and training in the fields for several hours, they are forcefully teleported back to the Town of Beginnings, to receive an announcement from Kayaba Akihiko. He reveals that the lack of a log out function, which they had recently realized, was a "feature" of his new game, and that forced removal of the Nerve Gear head piece from the other side will fry the person's brain using microwaves.

The only means to escape is to clear the game; that is, to successfully defeat all 100 levels of Aincrad and defeat the final boss. Kirito immediately grabs Klein and runs off, and after hearing that Klein will remain with his friends here, he leaves him and heads off to the next town.

When she discovered all the players were trapped in SAO she held herself up inside her room in «Starting City» for a week, before resolving to take fate into her own hands. This led her to kill monsters at an incredible rate and level up in a quick fashion, even risking her life in the process. It also earned her the title as «The Flash» for performing as astounding «Linear».
