Plot
Amu Hinamori is a student at Seiyo Elementary, where she has a reputation for being cool and spicy. However, her real personality is that of a very shy girl who has trouble showing her true self. One night, Amu wishes for the courage to be reborn as her "would-be" self, and the next morning Amu finds three brightly colored eggs—red, blue, and green—in her bed, which hatch into three Guardian Characters: Ran, Miki, and Su. The Guardian Characters aid Amu in discovering who she truly is and help fulfill Amu's dreams. Amu's life becomes much more complex as she struggles to deal with her "would-be" selves and the Seiyo Elementary's Guardians, who recruit Amu to search for the X Eggs and X Characters, the corrupted forms of peoples' dreams.
However, the Easter Company is extracting people's eggs in search of a special egg called the Embryo. The Embryo is believed to able to grant any wish to the one who possesses it. Nevertheless, the process creates X Eggs and X Characters.

Characters
Main article: List of Shugo Chara! characters
The main heroine of the story is Amu Hinamori, a popular girl who is actually insecure about herself. Peach-Pit uses Amu to explore differences between one's true self and the self that one presents to others. Like Jun Sakurada in Peach-Pit's previous work, Rozen Maiden, Amu tackles issues such as alienation and fitting in at school. Unlike most heroines in other magical girl series, Amu is neither the perfect sweetheart nor a complete klutz. Amu gets grumpy and frequently talks back to others in contrast to the polite schoolgirls that fill the genre.[1]
Amu's three Guardian Characters, Ran, Miki, and Su, aid her in her quest of self-discovery. Each Guardian Character represents an aspect of Amu's true self. Ran represents Amu's desire to be more honest and athletic. Miki represents Amu's desire to be more level headed and artistic. While Su represents Amu's desire to be more caring and improve her domestic skills. Moreover, the Character Guardians are more than mere mascots who help Amu learn about her true self. They can also perform a transformation where Amu's personality is replaced by an entirely different one.[2]
However, Amu is not the only one with Guardian Characters. Each of the Guardians—Tadase Hotori, Nadeshiko Fujisaki, Kukai Soma, and Yaya Yuiki—have their own Guardian Characters. Amu also encounters Ikuto Tsukiyomi and Utau Hoshina, two siblings who also have Guardian Characters and are employed by the Easter Company to search for a special egg called the Embryo.
Eventually, Nadeshiko Fujisaki and Kukai Soma leave the Guardians and are replaced by Rima Mashiro and Kairi Sanjou respectively. Although later on, Kairi left and was replaced by Nagihiko Fujisaki (Nadeshiko).
Characters:
Amu Hinamori
Amu Hinamori (日奈森 亜夢 Hinamori Amu?), the series' protagonist, is a student of Seiyo Elementary. Amu's classmates see her as "cool and spicy", but Amu is actually extremely shy and timid. Part of the reason for this misunderstanding is the trendy punk goth clothing her mother buys for her as well as the way in which she expresses her shyness and avoids doing new things which people interpret as 'cool'. However, when Amu wishes for the courage to be reborn as her would-be self, three colorful eggs appear the next morning, which hatch into Amu's three Guardian Characters: Ran, Miki, and Su. When one of her Guardian Characters Character Changes with her, she gets embarrassed because they make her speak in ways that she thinks are "totally out of character".
Because of her three Guardian Characters, Amu became a member of the Guardians, the school's student counsel, although she refused to join at first. Amu's position with the Guardians is the Joker. Her task, as the Joker, is to search for and purify X Eggs and X Characters, the corrupted forms of people's would-be selves. Ran, Miki, and Su help Amu with her task through a process called a Character Transformation, which is enabled by the Humpty Lock and grants Amu special abilities depending on the Character Guardian. Later on, Amu also creates a fourth egg, known as Diamond.
Amu's two main love interests are Tadase Hotori, the King's Chair of the Guardians, and Ikuto Tsukiyomi, a boy in the employment of Easter. There are other boys that could be said have a slight interest in her as well; Kairi Sanjou, who confesses to Amu, Kukai who seemed to be manly sometimes in Amu's point of view, and Nagihiko Fujisaki. Amu's primary rival is Utau Hoshina, an Idol singer for Easter who is jealous that Ikuto shows an interest in Amu instead of her. In the anime series, Amu is voiced by Kanae Itō.
Ran (ラン?)
Ran is the first to hatch from Amu's eggs and represents Amu's desire to be more honest and athletic. She is frequently cheering Amu on. During Character Change, Amu gains increased athletic abilities. On Character Transformation, Amu becomes Amulet Heart. Ran is voiced by Kana Asumi in the anime series.
Miki (ミキ?)
The second Guardian Character to hatch is Miki. Miki represents Amu's desire to be more level headed and artistic, Miki is also the one to help Amu make fashion choices. Reflecting Amu's love interests, Miki has shown an interest in Tadase's Guardian Character, Kiseki and Ikuto's Guardian Character Yoru AND Kukkai's Guardian chara Daichii. During Character Change, Amu gains increased artistic abilities. On Character Transformation, Amu becomes Amulet Spade. Miki is voiced by Nanae Katō in the anime series.
Su (スゥ Suu?)
The third Guardian Character, Su, represents Amu's desire to be more caring and improve her domestic skills. However, Su is prone to silly mistakes. She is very fond of Amu's teacher, Nikaidou, after helping Nikaidou realize that he was a good person and can still pursue his own dreams. Amu gains an improvement in cooking and sewing skills during Character Change, as well as becoming "Too Girly". During Character Transformation, Amu becomes Amulet Clover. Amulet Clover, unlike Amu's other character transformations, uses Remake Honey as a purifier. Su is voiced by Aki Toyosaki in the anime series.
Diamond (ダイヤ Daiya?)
Diamond is Amu's fourth Guardian Character. She becomes an X Egg when Amu dislikes all the changes that were happening, and hatches into an X Character after Utau finds her egg. Because of this, Amu doesn't know Diamond's true name. In the Japanese manga, Diamond's name is shorted to Dia. Diamond can Character Transforms with Utau, becoming Dark Jewel, however the transformation doesn't last for long. When Amu finally is able to purify Diamond, they undergo a Character Change, becoming Amulet Diamond. Afterward, Diamond returns to her egg until Amu "shines again". In the anime series Diamond's X Character form was voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro and her purified form was voiced by Kanae Itō.

Tadase Hotori
Tadase Hotori (辺里 唯世 Hotori Tadase?) is a boy in the same year as Amu and serves as King's Chair of the Guardians. Amu's develops a crush on Tadase soon after she transfers into the school. However, whenever he hears the word "prince", his Character Changes into an egotistical king who seeks world domination. Like Amu, he is actually a shy person and is not good at public speaking, instead he Character Changes with his Guardian Character, Kiseki. When a girl confesses their love to Tadase, he will have Kiseki reject her. His love interest is Amulet Heart, Amu's Character Transformation with Ran, but it later becomes Amu herself. Tadase has known Ikuto and Utau since childhood, but he does not talk about it in detail until the Guardians are about to face Utau. He used to be very fond of Ikuto, calling him 'onii-tan'. Tadase is voiced by Reiko Takagi in the anime television series.
Kiseki (キセキ?)
Kiseki is Tadase's Guardian Character. Kiseki was born for a combination of Tadase's desire to be stronger and the dream of world domination. Because of this, Kiseki is extremely egotistical and often demanding, and doesn't like obeying others. He frequently calls other Guardian Characters to go on 'Special Secret Training'. However, the other Guardian Characters will ignore him when a situation regarding an X Egg occurs. Kiseki holds a grudge against Ikuto's Guardian Character, Yoru. During Character Change, Tadase gains the confidence to overcome his shyness. However, sometimes Tadase will become an egotistical person who seeks world domination. Although Tadase could not Character Transform with Kiseki at first, they later gains this ability with the help of the Amu (When his egg gets tainted with an X), becoming Platinum Royale. Kiseki is voiced by Kaya Miyake in the anime series.

Ikuto Tsukiyomi
Ikuto Tsukiyomi (月詠 幾斗 Tsukiyomi Ikuto?) is a high school student contracted by Easter to find the Embryo. He often helps Amu even though he works for Easter. Ikuto actually despises Easter and tries to wrench himself free from them by trying to find the Embryo to grant his own wish. Ikuto has developed feelings for Amu and possesses the the Dumpty Key which pairs with Amu's Humpty Lock, but currently, it doesn't fit in the keyhole. Like his father, Ikuto is a skilled violinist. The Dumpty Key used to belong to his father's, until it ended up in the Hotori family's hands, to Tadase. His mother, upon marrying someone else after they found her husband's violin in a foreign country and believing that he would not come back, basically bound her children to working for Easter. Whenever his younger sister tried to kiss him or otherwise, he usually tried to deflect it, because Utau was in love with him even though they were siblings. Ikuto's personality is pretty outgoing and a little naughty. He likes teasing people, especially Amu and Tadase. In the manga timeline, it is shown he Character Transformed with a new black Guardian Egg to become Death Rebel, according to Easter's brainwashing plans.
He also has romantic feelings for Amu, in chapter 28, she asks Ikuto if he has anyone he likes, since he was going to be a senior in high school. Ikuto replies, "It's you." but Amu takes it as a joke. Until she was told by utau that he wasn't lying. In the anime television series, Ikuto is voiced by Yuichi Nakamura
Yoru (ヨル?)
Yoru is Ikuto's cat-like Guardian Character and represents Ikuto's desire to be free like a stray cat. Yoru often goes out by himself and enjoys causing trouble for the Guardians and their Guardian Characters for fun . When Ikuto and Yoru undergo a Character Transformation, they become Black Lynx. Miyuki Sawashiro voices Yoru in the anime series.

Utau had tried to find the Embryo to release her brother from Easter, but she never succeeded. Utau is very attracted to Ikuto and becomes extremely jealous of Amu because Ikuto shows an interest in her. However, she eventually accepts Amu and admits that Amu would be best for him.
She was the vocalist of the indie band Black Diamond which is produced by her manager, Yukari Sanjo, as a method of using the CDs of their music to draw the eggs out of children and make them into X Eggs. When the plan fell apart, Utau quit Easter with her manager and became a singer on her own, without Easter contracting her. Utau is voiced by Nana Mizuki in the anime television series.
Il (イル Iru?)
The devilish Il is the first of Utau's two Character Guardians introduced in the story. Il is mean and unkind, but dislikes nagging. During Character Transformation, Utau becomes Lunatic Charm. When Il felt lonely because El wasn't there for her to tease and when she felt that Utau was ignoring her because of Diamond, she Character Transforms with Amu, becoming Amulet Devil. Il is voiced by Hiromi Konno in the anime series.
El (エル Eru?)
El is Utau's second angelic Guardian Character and is the complete opposite of Il. Because El was treated badly by Il and ignored by Utau, she left home and wound up in Amu's care. El can perform a Character Transformation with Amu resulting in Amulet Angel, which surprised Utau. However, as Amu is not the real owner the Character Transformation quickly dissolves. El finally performed a Character Transformation with Utau, forming Seraphic Charm. Whenever El performs a Character Transformation with Amu, Amu usually ends up being embarrassed due to El's over-the-top antics. El is voiced by Hyo-sei in the anime series.

Nadeshiko Fujisaki is a student in the same year as Amu and serves as Queen's Chair of the Guardians. When Amu rejected the offer to join the Guardians, Nadeshiko tries several tactics to convince Amu to join. The two becomes best friends and Nadeshiko looks over and supports Amu in her love life. However, before Amu and Nadeshiko enter the sixth grade, Nadeshiko leaves Seiyo Elementary for Europe to study dancing.
Nadeshiko is actually a boy named Nagihiko Fujisaki (藤咲 なぎひこ Fujisaki Nagihiko?). It is tradition in the Fujisaki family for the males to be raised as females as part of their training so that they may play female roles in Japanese dance. The only people who knows Nagihiko's secret besides his family are Kukai, Tadase, and the school's principle, Tsukasa Amakawa. After Kairi leaves the Guardians, Nagihiko returns and is appointed as the interim Jack's Chair. In the anime television series, Nadeshiko is voiced by Saeko Chiba.

Although he was the captain of the soccer club, Kukai loves and excels all sports. At the end of the school year, Kukai graduates and goes on to middle school. However, Kukai returns to visit the Guardians and lifts Amu's spirits when she becomes dishearten because her diamond Guardian Egg became and X Egg. When Daichi and Kukai do Character Change, Kukai becomes even more athletic. When Kukai and Daichi return for a visit, they Character Transform wit the power of the Humpty Lock, becoming Sky Jack. In the anime television series, Daichi is voiced by Hiroyuki Yoshino.
Yaya Yuiki (結木 やや Yuiki Yaya?) Voiced by: Tomoko Nakamura
A childish and spoiled girl serving as the A-Chair (Ace Chair), she is one year junior to Amu. Yaya often acts too immature for her age, such as having an enormous sweet tooth, a great soft spot for items like ribbons as well as tending to be hyperactive. She is also a ballerina, though a rather clumsy one. She has a newborn baby brother named Tsubasa, who, she claims, gets all her parents' attention. It is because of this that her Guardian Character, Pepe, who is a baby, was born. Though she acts jealous around Tsubasa, Yaya does have a responsible side, once personally taking him to the doctor when he had a fever, as no other option was possible.
Her Character Change character is a baby that uses a giant rattle and a milk bottle as weapons; influenced by the "baby" character, she has a crybaby personality. Pepe says "Pretty, Cutie, Love Baby!" during a Character Change with Yaya. She was later able to do a Character Transformation called "Dear Baby," though there is a confusion and some thinks its "Day Baby". But due to her lack of maturity, often receives the end of her attacks.
Pepe (ぺぺ?) Voiced by: Kimiko Koyama
Pepe is a baby-like Guardian Character that belongs to Yaya. When either she or Yaya get hurt or something goes wrong, both of them will begin to whine and cry in unison. Most of her attacks are useless.
Rima Mashiro (真城 りま Mashiro Rima?) Voiced by: Sayuri Yahagi
Rima Mashiro replaced Nadeshiko new Queen's Chair. Although Rima is the same age as Amu, she is extremely petite and has relatively poor athletic ability. Most of the boys in her class admire her because of her beauty and passive personality, while the girls are annoyed by her because of her selfishness.
Because of a kidnapping incident that happened before she transferred to Seiyo, her parents pick her up after school, but since it interferes with their work schedules, they often argue about who cares more for Rima over work, resulting in Rima often having no one but Kusukusu as company for her secret interest in gag comedy.
Later, she opens up to Amu and becomes friends with her. In Chapter 30, Rima is jealous of Nagihiko while seeing him and Amu converse with each other.
Kusukusu (クスクス Kusukusu?) Voiced by: Sayaka Narita
Kusukusu is Rima's Guardian Character and represents Rima's desire to make others laugh. On Character Change, Rima becomes a gag character (which she is embarrassed to use) and uses a signature phrase "Bala-Balance" (Balancing Balance) from the magazine Gag Manga King (ギャグマンガ大王 Gyagu Manga Daiō?). During Character Transformation, Rima becomes Clown Drop.
Kairi Sanjo (三条 海里 Sanjō Kairi?) Voiced by: Mitsuki Saiga
The spectacled boy who served as the new J-Chair. He is tall (as seen in a character sheet, taller than Tadase), but actually he is two years junior to Amu. Like Rima, he is the total opposite in personality from his predecessor, Kukai Soma. Unlike the spontaneous Kukai, Kairi is uptight, extremely organized, and blunt about faults. Even with these traits, he is so capable Amu and Yaya call him "class president" or "class prez" in the anime.
He is actually Yukari Sanjo's younger brother sent to spy on the Guardians. This wasn't his own choice though, since Yukari immediately begged him to transfer to Seiyo upon discovering that he had a Guardian Character. Since his sister is mostly busy at work, Kairi takes care of the household work (and his sister) in her apartment. However, when he saw the true meaning of his "missions," he tries to rebel against Yukari, but not before he reveals his secret to the guardians when they accidentally discover him with Pleading CDs. He switches sides, after Amu convinces him he is a good person, and at the same time discovers his ability to Character Transform with Musashi into "Samurai Soul." At the end of chapter 26 he leaves saying that he promised his parents and local classmates that he would return, but not before declaring his love for Amu saying that he shall return for her when he has become a man. He also declared a rivalry toward Tadase.
Musashi (ムサシ?) Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto
Kairi's Chara. Musashi is a samurai type character. He is very serious. When he Character Transforms with Kairi they become Samurai Soul.
Yuu Nikaidou (二階堂 悠 Nikaidō Yū?) Voiced by: Junji Majima
Former member of Easter. In order find the Embryo, he joined Seiyo Elementary and became in charge of Amu's class in the disguise of a ditzy but kind-hearted teacher. His dream when he was a child was to become a robot engineer but when his mentor quit thanks to his ailing wife and his parents opposed the idea, he lost sight of his dream and became a twisted person. But he recovered with help from Amu and Su. He resigned from Easter Company and officially become the teacher in charge of Amu's class. A running joke is that he calls Amu; Himamori meaning "leisure time". Though as his appearance ceased, so did the gag.
Yukari Sanjo (三条 ゆかり Sanjō Yukari?) Voiced by: Rio Natsuki
Staff of Easter Company. Utau's manager, was competing with Nikaidou to see who is the first to find the Embryo. Yukari dated Nikaidou in the past.
She came up with a new project "Black Diamond" to at the same find the Embryo and mass-produce X eggs. The CDs of the band were freely distributed and the people listening to it had their Eggs removed by force. As the band became more famous their song is slated to be released to the Internet together with the unveiling of the band.
She and Utau have resigned from Easter after Amu got Diamond back, and are starting their own music industry called, "Sanjo Productions."

Ami Hinamori (日奈森 亜実 Hinamori Ami?) Voiced by: Kurumi Mamiya
Ami Hinamori is Amu's little sister who is innocent and pure-hearted. Ami is able to see Guardian Characters despite the fact that she does not have one. Artist of the artbook "Kokoro no Tamago" (The Heart's Egg). Looks similar to Tadase. At first, he is thought to hold the Humpty Lock. A cat lover and has a liking for Ikuto's cat ears.
Gozen (御前?) (full name unknown)
Has only been mentioned and is yet to appear. The people of Easter Company refer to him as "Gozen" and Gozen's real name and gender are unknown. Ikuto refers to Gozen as "the greatest person in Easter" so it could be possible that Gozen is the company president. Gozen promised the company employees a successful career if they can present Gozen the Embryo. For what purpose he entrusts the Easter Company to find the Embryo is unknown. Because of this Utau says she does not know what wish Easter wants to grant.
Kazuomi Hoshina (星名 一臣 Hoshina Kazuomi?) Voiced by: Mitsuru Ogata
Managing director of Easter company, a middle-aged man who is also the foster father of Ikuto and Utau.
The former superior of Nikaidou and Yukari, the two had reported to him. After his repeated failure to obtain the Embryo, he started fearing that Gozen may abandon him.
Ikuto refers to him as "Mr. Director".
Aruto Tsukiyomi (月詠 或斗 Tsukiyomi Aruto?)
A prominent japanese violinist who was once known as a genius. He is also father to Ikuto and Utau.
His marriage with Souko was met with strong rejection, because at that time he had no reputation. To allow the marriage, he agreed to the condition to stop pursuing music and to succeed the Easter Company, but the promise was broken when the former chairman, grandfather of Ikuto and Utau, died. He disappeared overnight. After that Souko, Ikuto and Utau come under severe criticism, making them strong characters. Years later his favorite violin which he brought with him appeared overseas. His whereabouts are still unknown.
Souko Hoshina (星名 奏子 Hoshina Sōko?)
The only daughter of the large financial group Hoshina family, also mother of Ikuto and Utau.

Nobuko Saeki (冴木 のぶ子 Saeki Nobuko?) Voiced by: Keiko Yamamoto
A spiritual fortune teller. Has a praised fortune telling column in "Housewive's Knowledge". Actually she dislikes the occult. She is 54 and likes miso peanuts. She is also fond of Tadase.
Saaya Yamabuki (山吹 沙綾 Yamabuki Saaya?) Voiced by: Miyuki Kawashō
An egotistical girl who is jealous of Amu in every way possible. She is in the same class as Amu, and shows off whenever she gets the chance (ex: professional drawing skills; undergarments). It is said that she has a crush on Kukai. However, in the anime, she had a crush on Tadase before having a crush on Kukai, but has been truly been crushing on Kukai the entire time. She, like most girls, dislikes Rima upon her arival.
Suzuki Seiichiro (誠一郎 鈴木 Seiichirō Suzuki?) Voiced by: Omi Minami
A boy who was saved by Amu in the first episode, and has developed a crush for her ever since. His last name is unknown, for he is either interrupted or is unable to say his name, though his first name was mentioned when his Gym Teacher asked Amu's class if anyone could help Suzuki out. Though his Heart's Egg once became an X Egg and later was saved by Amu, he has high hopes of a charismatic founder of a mega million dollar computer company. Is often seen cheering for Amu, admiring her in someway, or proving to Saaya Yamabuki that Amu is a superhero or can save anyone from anything.
