Sailor Moon
Sailor Moon
is a fictional character in the Sailor Moon metaseries and the main protagonist of the franchise, as well as its title character. Her civilian name is Usagi Tsukino (Serena in the English version). She is a carefree schoolgirl who can transform into the de facto leader of the series' primary heroines, the Sailor Senshi.
Due to the series' widespread popularity in many countries, as well as her distinctive and oft-copied odango hairstyle, she is one of the most immediately recognizable and iconic anime characters worldwide. She is the only character to appear in all 200 episodes of the anime, and is present in all 52 acts of the manga as well as all 51 acts of the live-action series.
Serena, Usagi's given name in the English versions of the series, is derived from "Serenity," the name Usagi went by in her past life. In the English manga she is mostly called by the nickname Bunny, which is the literal meaning of usagi. Her boyfriend for most of the series, Mamoru Chiba, calls her by the affectionate nickname "Usako" (which is a diminutive, the suffix -ko meaning "child").

Usagi Tsukino

Within the metaseries, Usagi Tsukino is introduced as a schoolgirl living in 20th century Tokyo. She is initially depicted as a well-intentioned but underachieving crybaby who prefers the life of a normal teen-aged Earth girl. Nevertheless, she continues to fight the evils of her past life and protects the Earth with the Silver Crystal, as the Champion of Justice, Sailor Moon, which provides for most of the conflict within both the manga and the anime.
** Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show**
Her journey begins when, while running to school, she sees some neighborhood kids abusing a cat
and rescues it. Later, the cat comes into her room and reveals herself as a talking cat named Luna, who serves as the mentor for the show. Luna gives her a magical brooch which helps her transform into Sailor Moon (the "soldier for love and justice"), and tells her that she is a Soldier who must fight for peace. She also tells her that she must find the rest of the Soldiers, as well as their princess. Though at first Usagi is portrayed as a "reluctant heroine" (in the anime she often is rescued by Tuxedo Mask) as time goes on her character grows more confident and mature. However, she still has her crybaby moments late into the metaseries.
Usagi in her school uniform, as drawn by Naoko Takeuchi. Takeuchi consistently emphasizes that Usagi is a lazy daydreamer, but one with an enormous heart.Usagi lives in Azabu Jūban (which is a real district of Tokyo) with her mother Ikuko Tsukino, her father Kenji Tsukino, and her brother Shingo Tsukino. Usagi's family is named after the family members of the metaseries' creator, Naoko Takeuchi's real family. Out of the Sailor Senshi, Usagi and Minako Aino are the only characters with a nventional nuclear family. Usagi is also the only one known to have a sibling.
She is a poor student, and often comes off as dumb (especially in the anime), though this is generally played off as being due to naïveté and laziness rather than actual stupidity. This is because she spends her time eating, playing video games and reading comics (including RunRun, which published the Sailor V manga in real life) rather than studying. She is often portrayed as a character that is better at art than science.
Usagi's boyfriend is Mamoru Chiba. Mamoru and Usagi's relationship is a large part of Usagi's life, as well as the series. The love they share helps Usagi make it through many challenges. Mamoru becomes Usagi's boyfriend after many trials, and they date for a long time during the series. Mamoru eventually proposes to Usagi, and they ultimately get married.
One of the biggest secrets about Sailor Moon is revealed in a number of connecting episodes in the end of the first series, when she realizes that she is Princess Serenity (the "crown princess" of the Silver Millennium) reborn. In the second series, Usagi learns that she will give birth to a daughter (Chibiusa) by her boyfriend and future husband. Usagi will also become a "sovereign of the Earth", known as Neo-Queen Serenity, by the 30th century.
Usagi is shown to love sweet foods and is easily distracted by them. She loves cake so much that it is listed as her hobby in the manga, and her favorite subject is listed as Home Economics. She is also said to dislike carrots (although she eats them in the anime), and is terrible at both English and mathematics. In addition to being a genuine friend, Usagi is extremely good at brown nosing when it's needed and, of course, crying to get what she wants. She is afraid of dentists and ghosts, and her greatest dream is to be a bride. Usagi loves rabbits as well as the colors white and pink, and is apparently a member of the Manga Drawing Club at school, though her skill level varies widely when shown in the anime. She stands 150 centimeters (4 ft 11 in) tall.
In the manga and anime, Mamoru gives Usagi the nickname "Odango," a kind of rice dumpling, based on her distinctive hair style. At first this is always accompanied with the suffix "-atama," meaning "head," but as time goes on it is left off. Usagi hates the name at first, but as they become close it develops into a sign of affection. Later in the series, other important male (or androgynous) figures in her life, Haruka and Seiya, adopt the name as well. Because there is no North American equivalent to odango, the English dub almost always uses "Meatball Head," once "Donut Head," and, somewhat incongruously,"Moon Face." In the English manga, Mamoru calls Usagi "buns", which is both an approximation of odango and short for Bunny.
Variations
** Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show**
Usagi in the series is often inconsistent from version to version. In the manga, while she starts out as a crybaby, she quickly matures and learns to make decisions for herself. She is often portrayed as just lazy rather than lacking intelligence as was shown when she passed her high school exams without trouble when threatened with being separated from her friends.
The anime often portrays Usagi as more flaky and child-like, and not as serious. She often bickers with Chibiusa, begs Mamoru to buy her things and bickers with Rei very childishly, but is equally caring as her manga counterpart. She does evolve during the course of the series, but it lacks the adult maturity that Usagi of the manga gains until the last few episodes.
Lastly, the dubbed version made Serena more of a ditz than Usagi—airheaded and often annoying. The script for the dub was changed to reflect this change such as Serena saying in episode #103, "Hi, you look like da bomb in those kimonos", which is explicitly trying to emulate a stereotypical valley girl dialect. In contrast, in the following episode, Neo-Queen Serenity talks without this pseudo-valley girl dialect, showing this was intentional. She whined far more than she did in the original anime version. This altered the perception many fans had of her character.
Usagi in the live-action series is slightly different from her manga and anime counterparts. She is much more outgoing and extroverted, and seems to make friends very easily, which immediately puts her personality in conflict with her fellow Senshi, all of whom were loners to varying degrees. She rarely uses formal grammar with those of her age (though she does with adults), and refers to everyone as "[given name]-chan," which is very informal and a way of expressing closeness. She even teases Ami when Ami continues calling her "Tsukino-san," a formal way of speaking to classmates, saying that it is as if they are not friends.Every time a new Senshi appears, Usagi immediately tries to make her a friend, even though almost all of them resist. However, through Usagi's influence, the other Senshi gradually begin to realize that they are stronger together than they are alone.
Aspects and forms

Princess Sailor Moon — — Act 36
Neo-Queen Serenity Act 16 Ep. 68 —
Super Sailor Moon Act 30 Ep. 111 —
Eternal Sailor Moon Act 42 Ep. 167 —
As a character with different incarnations, special powers, transformations and a long lifetime virtually spanned between the Silver Millennium era and the 30th century, Usagi gains multiple aspects and aliases such as Princess Serenity, Sailor Moon, Princess Sailor Moon, Super Sailor Moon, Eternal Sailor Moon, and Neo-Queen Serenity.
Sailor Moon
This is Usagi's Senshi identity, frequently referred to as the Soldier of Love and Justice, and once as the Soldier of Mystery. Her uniform is originally colored in blue and red (or dark pink), with a crescent moon motif; it gradually changes to incorporate more pink and yellow and adds a heart motif as well. She also wears red hairpieces and white barrettes resembling feathers, both of which can be used for minor attacks. Her personality is no different from when she is a civilian, although certain powers are unavailable to her in that form.
Symbol of the Moon Kingdom Sailor Moon's attack names center around the moon, love, mystery and light. She starts out as a frightened, reluctant girl, often having to be bailed out by the others, but gradually comes to accept who she is. She eventually becomes the most powerful Senshi in the galaxy, but her capacity for caring about other people is frequently shown to be more powerful still.
Eternal Sailor Moon in the anime. As she grows stronger, Sailor Moon gains additional powers, and at key points her appearance and title change to reflect this. The first change takes place during the third major story arc—Act 30 of the manga and Episode 111 of the anime—when she obtains the Holy Grail and becomes Super Sailor Moon. Her uniform becomes more ornate (see top of page), and her powers are increased; at first she is unable to take this form without the Grail, and is weakened when its effects fade. Near the end of the S series, she takes this form using pure desperation and the powers of the other Senshi after the Grail has been destroyed. Later, in Act 34 (episode 128), Pegasus' power enables her to transform without it.
Sailor Moon receives her third form at the end of the fourth major story arc (in Act 41 of Dream in the manga, and Episode 168 of Sailor Stars in the anime). The combined power of the other members of the Sailor Team transforms her into Eternal Sailor Moon, who Diana says is the closest in power to Neo-Queen Serenity. Her uniform is even more radically altered—most significantly, two pairs of angelic wings adorn her back. They replace her standard back bow as they are attached only at the waist and are in the shape of a large bow.
In the manga, Eternal Sailor Moon uses the Silver Moon Crystal, which is an evolved form of the Silver Crystal, to do her attacks. In the Sailor Stars anime it's less clear whether the crystal she is using is still called the Silver Crystal. The names of the attacks are congruent with the manga, which uses the name of the new crystal, but the crystal is not clearly given a new name.
Princess Serenity
** Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show**
Princess Serenity as seen in the manga. Unlike in the anime, Serenity is almost always pictured with silver hair.Princess Serenity lived in the Moon Kingdom during the age of the Silver Millennium. She was the daughter of Queen Serenity
, who ruled the Silver Millennium and watched over the Earth. Princess Serenity's guardians and closest friends were Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, and Sailor Venus, who lived on the moon with her.
Princess Serenity often explored Earth to see real greenery, even though it had been forbidden. On one of her visits, she met the crown prince of the Earth, Endymion, and they fell in love.
During the attack which caused the Moon Kingdom's downfall, Prince Endymion died protecting Serenity. In the manga, she committed suicide out of grief, while in the anime they were both killed by Queen Metaria. Serenity's mother, the Queen, was able to seal away the evil which had inspired the attack, but everyone involved was killed. Before her own death, the Queen used the Silver Crystal to give her daughter and others another chance at life, hoping in particular that, this time, Serenity and Endymion could find happiness together.
Eventually, Serenity was reincarnated as Usagi Tsukino in the 20th century. Usagi occasionally takes the form of Princess Serenity during the metaseries, often at climactic moments when more strength is needed than Sailor Moon can access. Usagi discovers her identity as a princess in Act 9 of the manga, Episode 34 of the anime, and Act 25 of the live-action series.
In the manga, while Usagi herself has been drawn with white, yellow, and even pink hair, Serenity almost always has white hair. In the anime, both characters are always blonde. In the live-action series, she has black hair, just like Usagi, and it is worn straight rather than in pigtails. This emphasizes the ambiguity of her identity before it is revealed that she is Usagi.
At climactic moments, Usagi, as Serenity sometimes gains a pair of functioning angelic wings. She does this during the final battles of SuperS, to save Chibiusa when the two of them encounter Pegasus, and Sailor Stars, during the fight with the fully-possessed Galaxia when she grabs the Sword of Sealing. It is unclear if this power comes from her past life, is Usagi's own power, or came from Pegasus and the Sword of Sealing.
In
the first two series, dubbed by DiC, Princess Serenity is known as Princess Serena (although the original name is used at least once, to emphasize the similarity between Princess and Neo-Queen Serenity). In the last two series, dubbed by Cloverway, the name Serenity is used.
Princess Sailor Moon
** Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show**
Princess Sailor Moon's uniform is considerably more elaborate than Sailor Moon's.Unique to the live-action series, Princess Sailor Moon is a powerful combination of Sailor Moon and Princess Serenity, introduced when Usagi is "possessed" by the spirit of her former self. She originally appears after Queen Beryl takes the Shitennou hostage in exchange for Mamoru. Silently furious, Sailor Moon transforms into Princess Sailor Moon and halts Queen Beryl using her sword.
It is obvious that Princess Sailor Moon is not the same as Usagi when she shows no remorse for the fate of the Shitennou (at least Nephrite's fate), and when she refers to Mamoru as "Endymion" rather than using his civilian name. She is also constantly angry, and tends to leave flaming carnage in her wake. In one Act, Usagi's friend Naru accidentally gets too close and winds up in the hospital for a while. Though smiling in most promotional material for the series, Princess Sailor Moon does not smile in the series itself.
Princess Sailor Moon states to Usagi during inner dialogue that she has no qualms about destroying the Earth if Endymion is ever taken from her, and later on even summons her own special demons to fight her friends, all bearing moon-shaped signs similar to hers. Usagi struggles to suppress her power in fear that she would eventually destroy the world, something that comes to light in an Ideon-like fashion for the series finale. Her internal conflict is the major conflict for the rest of the series.
Princess Sailor Moon has a sword, which also doubles as a harp with invisible strings. She plays this in sorrow while thinking of her lost prince, and is capable of using it to heal people and the land. Other that this, the exact effect of playing the harp is unclear, but much of the time it causes the power of her Silver Crystal to feed the power of Queen Metalia, accelerating the devastation of the planet. Using the sword in its capacity as a weapon, Princess Sailor Moon can deflect enemy attacks and can unleash devastating projectile attacks. She also has the ability to levitate, and to teleport.
Like other characters unique to the live-action series, Princess Sailor Moon's outfit was designed by Naoko Takeuchi herself. Her sailor outfit was considerably more elaborate than Sailor Moon's, and included pearls on her gloves and lace on her skirt.
Neo-Queen Serenity
** Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show**
Neo-Queen Serenity with her husband, King Endymion. Her face is given smooth colors and is always calm, unlike that of the present-day Usagi.During the second major story arc, it is revealed that Usagi, as Serenity, will eventually become the queen regnant of a new Silver Millennium called Crystal Tokyo, which will exist during the 30th century. She is first seen in this future form in Act 16 of the manga and Episode 68 of the anime. Usagi learns that she will be given the title "Sovereign of Earth," and Mamoru will become King Endymion alongside her. It is stated in the manga that she becomes Neo-Queen Serenity after warding off a second Ice Age, though the specifics of this are never discussed. This incarnation is shown to be more mature than the present day Usagi, though she still has her moments—in Episode 104, Chibiusa gives the Senshi a letter from the future, in which the Queen asks them to train her—the letter is simplistic and contains almost no kanji. Also, in Episode 146, Diana says that the King and Queen sometimes play sick to get out of things. Letters she sends though the Door of Space-Time to Chibiusa are sometimes signed with a drawing of herself (and sometimes King Endymion) instead of a name.
Neo-Queen Serenity is probably Usagi's most powerful form, based on comments by Diana, who states that Eternal Sailor Moon is second in power only to the Queen. However, in the manga, Neo-Queen Serenity addresses the present-day Guardian Senshi, stating that after she became queen, she lost much of her power as a Senshi. She does still demonstrate considerable power, reviving the citizens of 30th Century Tokyo with the Spiral Heart Moon Rod and bestowing the Senshi with "Planet Powers" and her own past self with new "Cosmic Powers".
She wears an altered version of the dress she wore as a princess, with the shoulder pieces omitted and a large, wing-shaped bow replacing the smaller one of the princess outfit. In the manga, Neo-Queen Serenity's dress is similar to her past form's outfit. She also wears a crown and new earrings. The crescent moon is always visible on her forehead, just as it was with her princess form. Her face and facial expressions are drawn to look more mature than the 20th century Usagi, but her iconic hairstyle is retained.
In the original anime and manga series, this form is the only one that Chibiusa considers as being her mother, while Usagi of the past is regarded as more of a big-sister figure, and many characters often mistake them for sisters. In the English-dubbed anime, however, "Rini" frequently refers to "Serena" in her civilian or Senshi forms as "Mama."
Special powers and items
Sailor Moon's pre-battle taunt pose, an iconic symbol throughout the series: "In the name of the moon, I will punish you!"Usagi is not shown using any special powers in her civilian form. She must first transform into a Sailor Senshi by wearing a special device (usually a compact) and shouting a special command, which activates the device. Her original transformation command is "Moon Prism Power, Make-up!" .
She gains a new basic transformation sequence for each of the five major story arcs. In her basic form, the command changes as she becomes more powerful and obtains new transformation devices, evoking
"Moon Crystal Power"
and later "Moon Cosmic Power"
. A transformation into Super Sailor Moon initially requires her to already be in Senshi form and to use an additional item (called the Holy Chalice/Rainbow Moon Cálice) as well as the command "Crisis, make-up!"z
, but in the anime this saps her strength. For the fourth story arc she gains the ability to transform directly into Super Sailor Moon via Moon Crisis
,and in the fifth arc becomes Eternal Sailor Moon with Silver Moon Crystal Powers
in the manga, or Moon Eternal
in the anime (and once in the manga). Most of Sailor Moon's anime transformations involve the use of shiny red or pink ribbons which come out of her brooch and form her uniform. Feathers and wings also figure prominently in some sequences, particularly the transformation into Eternal Sailor Moon. When her detransformation is shown, ribbons reappear and unravel from around her body and go back into the brooch. Usually the clothes she was wearing before she transformed reappear, but if her detransformation is forced, she may be left naked with the ribbons hanging loose around her body. She also has the Disguise Pen, which allows her to take on a human disguise by saying "Moon Power!"
This is used very frequently in the first story arc, but completely eliminated after the second arc.
As the protagonist and leader, Sailor Moon has the most special powers of any character in the series. Her physical attacks, usually one-offs and not always successful, include Sailor Moon Kick and Sailor Body Attack, as well as the occasional use of her hair pins as projectile weapons. In her very first battle, she cries in terror and the red hair pieces on her odango amplify the sound waves, doing damage to the enemy. Her odango ornaments can also be used to hear faraway sounds.
General magic attacks are her most common type of power. In each adaptation of the series she can remove her tiara and turn it into a throwing weapon, which is her first major attack and which she continues to use on occasion far into the anime series.] In the anime she demonstrates the ability to control the path of her Tiara.
In the manga, a powered-up tiara enables her to attack with Moon Twilight Flash, while in the live-action series this move requires an item called the Moon Stick and is her primary attack, though she also sometimes uses unnamed beam attacks. In the manga and anime she only uses the Moon Stick to perform Moon Healing Escalation
and return possessed humans to their normal selves; Luna says in the anime that this item belongs to the leader of the Sailor Senshi. In the anime, she once uses her tiara to purify a group of possessed people and in the live-action series she can heal others without any incantation.
Healing or purifying powers
are often indistinguishable from attacks, as the monsters of the day in the series are usually created by corruption of an object or person. Sailor Moon has one or two primary attacks per story arc, most of which require a unique rod or wand, and in the original anime, each of them causes the target monster to shout a phrase and revert back to what it was made from (or to dust). These primary attacks are: the first series' Moon Healing Escalation, the second series' Moon Princess Halation
, the third series' Moon Spiral Heart Attack
and Rainbow Moon Heart Ache
, the fourth series' Moon Gorgeous Meditation
, and the fifth series' Starlight Honeymoon Therapy Kiss
and ,Silver Moon Crystal Power Kiss.
A handful of powers come up only once and in critical situations; often the common repeating powers in the anime are only one-offs in the manga. In the anime, Sailor Moon uses her transformation command when battling Queen Metalia and when turning the Ayakashi Sisters into normal women. She says
Moon Cosmic Power when struggling to destroy
Pharaoh 90, and at the end of the series uses
Silver Moon Crystal Eternal Power to fight Chaos.
Sailor Moon can be temporarily powered-up by the other Sailor Senshi lending her their powers, as shown in the climax of the Sailor Moon R movie and multiple times throughout the series. She also often attacks in tandem with her future daughter, Sailor Chibi Moon, and, at critical moments, receives power from individuals such as Luna, Queen Serenity, her future self, Mamoru, ChibiChibi, and others.
By far, Sailor Moon's most important item is the Silver Crystal, which is the "holy stone" of the Silver Millennium

. It figures significantly in the first, second, and fifth story arcs, as it is the proof of her identity as the Princess and the source of her power. It eventually evolves into the Silver Moon Crystal
The protagonist of Sailor Moon is Usagi Tsukino, who lives as an ordinary middle school girl until she is found by a talking cat named Luna. Through Luna, Usagi learns that the world is about to be attacked by a Dark Kingdom that had appeared once before, long ago, and destroyed the kingdom of the moon. Her dormant powers are then awakened to defend the Earth against the coming onslaught, and she is led to a number of friends who join her in the battle.
Usagi fights using the identity of Sailor Moon, and as the story progresses she learns more and more about the enemies which face her and the evil force that is sending them. Gradually she discovers the truth about her own past life, her destined true love, and the possibilities for the future of the Solar System.
The plot spans five major story arcs, each of which is represented in both the manga and anime, usually under different names. These are the Dark Kingdom arc, the Black Moon arc (Sailor Moon R), the Infinity arc (Sailor Moon S), the Dream arc (Sailor Moon SuperS), and the Stars arc (Sailor Stars). The anime added an additional minor arc at the start of the second series, and spent the first few episodes of Sailor Stars wrapping up the plot from the previous series.
The Nine Main Characters in Sailor Moon:
Characters:
Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon
The main character of the series, called Serena in the English anime (nicknamed Bunny in the manga). Usagi is a carefree schoolgirl with an enormous capacity for love,
and transforms into the heroine called Sailor Moon
. At the beginning of the series she is portrayed as an immature crybaby who hates having to fight evil and wants nothing more than to be a normal girl.
As she progresses, however,
she embraces the chance to use her power to protect those she cares about.
Mamoru Chiba/Tuxedo Mask
A student somewhat older than Usagi, called Darien in the English adaptations of the series.
As a young child he was in a terrible car accident that robbed him of his parents and his knowledge of who he is.
During the series he has some precognitive ability,
including dreams that inspire him to take on the guise of Tuxedo Mask
and fight alongside the Sailor Senshi.
After an initially confrontational relationship, he and Usagi remember their past lives together and fall in love.
Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury
A quiet bookworm in Usagi's class, called Amy in the English adaptations of the series.
She is hugely intelligent, with a rumored IQ of 300,can transform into Sailor Mercury, acquiring power over all phases of water
. Ami's shy exterior masks a passion for knowledge and for taking care of the people around her.
She hopes to be a doctor one day, like her mother, and tends to be the practical one in the group.
Secretly, she is also a fan of pop culture and romance novels, and becomes embarrassed whenever this is pointed out.
Rei Hino/Sailor Mars
An elegant miko (shrine maiden), called Raye in the English versions. Because of her work as a Shintō priestess, Rei can sense and dispel evil even in civilian form. When she transforms into Sailor Mars, she can also manipulate fire
. She is very serious and focused, but although easily annoyed by Usagi's flightiness, cares about her very much.
Rei is portrayed as boy-crazy in the early anime, but is uninterested in romance in both the manga and live-action series.
She attends a private Catholic school, separate from the other girls.
Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter
A tomboy who transfers into Usagi's school, called Lita in the English versions. Very tall and strong for a Japanese schoolgirl, she can transform into Sailor Jupiter, attacking with lightning and with some control over plants
. Both Makoto's parents died in a plane crash years ago, so she lives alone and takes care of herself. She cultivates her physical strength as well as more domestic interests, including housekeeping, cooking, and gardening. She wants to marry young and to own a flower and cake shop.
Minako Aino/Sailor Venus
A perky dreamer who acted on her own as Sailor V for some time. Called Mina in the English versions, she has a companion cat called Artemis
who works alongside Luna in guiding the Sailor Senshi. Minako transforms into Sailor Venus, Soldier of Love
, and is the leader of Sailor Moon's four inner guardians. She also dreams of becoming a famous singer and idol and attends auditions whenever she can. At the start of the live-action series, she is already these things, but has poor health and separates herself from the other Senshi.
Chibiusa/Sailor Chibi-Moon
A little girl from 1,000 years in the future, have Luna-P Ball
,and the son of luna and artemis,Diana
and called Rini in the English versions of the series. She comes to the 20th century on several occasions, whether to seek help or to be trained as a soldier, and learns to transform into Sailor Chibi Moon (or, in the English anime, Sailor Mini Moon)
. Chibiusa co-stars with Usagi in certain story arcs, though they sometimes have an adversarial relationship.
She considers herself much more mature than Usagi, and wants to grow up and become a lady in her own right.
Setsuna Meioh/Sailor Pluto
A mysterious woman, called Trista in the English anime. She is first revealed as Sailor Pluto,
the Guardian of Time
, whose duty is to protect the Space-Time Door from unauthorized travelers. It is only later that she appears on Earth, living as a college student.
She has a distant personality and can be very stern, but can also be quite friendly and helps the younger Sailor Senshi when she can. After so long at the gate of time she carries a deep sense of loneliness, although she is close friends with Chibiusa.
1.Michiru Kaioh/Sailor Neptune
and 2.Haruka Tenoh/Sailor Uranus
1.A talented violinist with some precognition, called Michelle in the English anime. She is a year older than most of the other Sailor Senshi and can transform into Sailor Neptune, channeling the power of the ocean
. She worked alone for some time before finding her partner, Sailor Uranus, with whom she fell in love. Michiru is elegant and personable, already well-known for her music as well as her painting, but has given up her own dreams for the life of a Senshi. She is fully devoted to this duty and willing to make any sacrifice for it.
2.A good-natured, masculine-acting girl, called Amara in the English anime.
Haruka is the same age as her partner, Michiru, and transforms into Sailor Uranus, Soldier of the Sky
. Before becoming a Sailor Senshi, she dreamt of being a racer, and is skilled at driving. She tends to dress and, in the anime, speak like a man.
She is so friendly and genial that nearly everyone she meets is attracted to her. When it comes to fighting the enemy, however, she distrusts outside help and prefers to work solely with Sailor Neptune and later Pluto and Saturn.
Hotaru Tomoe/Sailor Saturn
A sweet, lonely young girl whose name is unchanged in English (though pronounced slightly differently). Daughter of a possessed mad scientist, she is sickly and weak as the result of a terrible lab accident in her youth. After overcoming the darkness that has surrounded her family, she is able to become the Soldier of Silence, Sailor Saturn
. She wields forces of destruction so powerful that she is rarely called upon to use them, and unlike the others, her Senshi and civilian personas seem somewhat disconnected.
She is often pensive, and as a human has the inexplicable power to heal others.

Sailor Moon Villains
Forces of the Dark Kingdom
(Sailor Moon: episodes 1 - 40, Japanese 1 - 46)
Queen Beryl
Queen Beryl is the ruler of the Negaverse. She herself is a minion of the Negaforce, an evil entity bent on conquest of the universe. She has four generals, and many legions of evil monsters. After being banished into another dimension for a thousand years, she has found her way back to normal space. By opening small portals, she can send evil monsters to and from the Negaverse. From her Negaverse, Beryl attempts to free the powers of the Negaforce. With these powers, she would become capable of conquering Earth and its universe. Her mission is to collect human life force energy, and feed it to the Negaforce, and to obtain the Imperium Silver Crystal, the only weapon capable of foiling Queen Beryl's plans.
Queen Beryl was also responsible for the attack on the Moon Kingdom, which in turn forced Queen Serenity to send her daughter and the power of the Sailor Scouts into the future. Actually, we aren't sure how the Sailor Scouts get to the future. The original Japanese version has the people mentioned from the Moon Kingdom reincarnated on Earth several hundred years into the future (our present day).
Queen Beryl is in love with Prince Darien, and insanely jealous of Princess Serena.
Queen Beryl was killed by Princess Serena (Princess Serenity) in the end.
Jadeite
Jadeite was Queen Beryl's first general (chronologically in the series). His mission was to gather energy to activate the powers of the Negaverse. Since Jadeite could not defeat the Sailor Scouts Queen Beryl killed him.
Nephrite
One of Queen Beryl's agents. He poses himself as a big time business man. He prefers to use his powers to amplify the energy of his victims before collecting it. Unfortunately for Beryl, he falls in love with Molly, and discovers there is more to life than evil. Zoisite, the third general, notices his weakness. She sends a moster to attack Molly, and Nephrite is fatally wounded protecting her.
Zoisite
Zoisite is one of Queen Beryl's servants. She was trained by Malachite, another servant of Queen Beryl. Her relationship between herself and Malachite is much more than just trainer and trainee. These two have developped a semi-romantic relationship. In the storyline, Zoisite is mainly responsible for retrieving the seven rainbow crystals that were scattered on Earth. She has an absolute hatred of Tuxedo Mask, more so than the Sailor Scouts. Eventually, she dies in episode #31 "A Reluctant Princess" for having disobeyed Queen Beryl's orders by trying to hurt Tuxedo Mask.
One more mention about Zoisite. In the US version, Zoisite is female. In the original (Japanese version), Zoisite is male. Put two and two together and that means that Zoisite and Malachite were homosexual in the original series.
Kunzite
Kunzite is one of Queen Beryl's more powerful agents. With his assistant and trainee Zoisite, their mission is to recover the Imperium Silver Crystal, so that Queen Beryl can procede to release the forces of the Negaverse. He has a semi-romantic relationship with Zoisite (the only person he can work with as a team). He has an absolute hatred of the Sailor Scouts (especially Sailor Moon), much more than for Tuxedo Mask. That way, both Zoisite and Malachite complement each others' hatred for the good guys. He attempts to destroy the Sailor Scouts by sending them into the past. However, the Silver Crystal intervenes, and sends them to the Moon Kingdom's ruins. There the spirit of Queen Serenity reveals the truth of the Sailor Scouts' pasts, and who Serena actually is. They are then returned to the present with a newfound sense of urgency. They then repel Malachite's attack, and he is fatally wounded by his own weapon.
Aliens
(Sailor Moon R: Part1: episodes 41 - 54, Japanese 46 - 60)
Alan & Ann
Alan is one of the two aliens that arrive to Earth. They come to Earth to feed off of the life energy that the Earth and all its inhabitants possess. Alan is also a caretaker of the Doom Tree. His assumed family name while masquerading as a student in school is Granger. His relationship with Ann is that of companionship (as aliens) and as siblings (in their assumed identities).
Ann is the other alien that accompanied Alan and the Doom Tree to Earth. Her assumed family name is Granger, since she's assuming a brother-sister relationship with Alan.
Both Alan and Ann where showed by the Sailor Scouts how to be good, and helped them notice that they love each other (There not brother and sister, there more like Adam and Eve). Sailor Moon also takes all the evil out of the Doom Tree, thus giving them another chance to life.
Dispite what episode 41 says Alan and Ann were not sent by Queen Beryl, which is nonsensical and invented purely for the dub. The dub also tries to pretend the "Negaverse" is involved with the tree and that they lied to them, which isn't true, The aliens have nothing to do with the Negaverse.
Forces of the Dark Moon
(Sailor Moon R: Part2: episodes 54 - ?? (maybe 83), Japanese 60 - 89)
Wiseman
Wiseman is the ruler of the Dark Moon. In order to take over Earth (in the future) he sends back in the past (to our present day) Rubeus to destroy the city of the future known as Crystal Tokyo.
Rubeus
Rubeus is a servant of Wiseman, from the Dark Moon of the Negaverse. His mission is to find whatever means there are of destroying the future city of Crystal Tokyo, and to execute those plans. He tries to destroy Crystal Tokyo by destroying its powerful "crystal points" in the past. He is also trying to capture Reeny and return her to the future. He usually hands down those individual assignments to the four sisters that he brought into the past with him.
Catsy
Catsy is the most aggressive of the four sisters. She requests very little help from droids, and she doesn't mind fighting toe to toe with the Sailor Scouts. Her distinguishing features are the cat ears in her hairstyle, and the sorry looking tutu. She is also very obsessed about her looks, especially her face. Catsy has powers of fire similar to Sailor Mars. She was the first of the evil sisters to be turned from evil and to live as a normal person.
In the Japanese version, Catsy (Cooan) was named after the mineral Kermesite.
Birdy
Birdy is the least combatative and the most quiet of the four sisters. She's also the most intelligent. She relies on intricate plans to obtain her objectives. She also has the least quarrels between her and the other sisters. In public life, she generally dresses conservatively, but in all other times, the opposite is true. Like Sailor Mercury, she has powers over water. After her defeat at the hands of Sailor Mercury, and the encouragement of Catsy, she is changed into a normal human being.
In the Japanese version, Birdy (Beruche) was named after the mineral Berthierite.
Avery
The 'orange' sister, Avery, has powers similar to those of Sailor Venus. Avery is the least concerned of the four sisters about their mission. She often quarrels with her older sister Prisma. She is extremely conceited about her physical appearance. Her weapon of choice is the whip. She was defeated by Sailor Venus, and with the encouragement of the other two sisters, she was changed into a normal human being.
In the Japanese version, Avery (Karaberas) was named after the mineral Calaverite.
Prisma
Prisma is obsessed with trying to outwit her younger sister Avery. She is also somewhat reluctant to go on missions. Prisma has powers very similar to Sailor Jupiter. Her obsessive behavior often proved to be a great help to the Sailor Scouts. She was brought down by Sailor Jupiter, and the other three sisters encouraged her to join them in being a normal human being.
In the Japanese version, Prisma (Petz) was named after the mineral Petzite.
Black Lady
Rini was tricked by the forces of the Dark Moon, late in Salior Moon R (Japanese episode 85), and became the villain Black Lady.

The Sailor Moon series began as a manga written and drawn by Takeuchi, the series' creator. It was an evolution from her earlier Codename: Sailor V idea
, expanding the concept into a team of five girls rather than just one. Recurring motifs include astronomy, astrology, Greek myth, Roman myth, geology, Japanese elemental themes, teen fashions, and schoolgirl antics.
Only one story arc was originally planned, and the storyline developed in meetings a year prior to publications, but after it was completed Takeuchi was asked to continue. Four more story arcs were produced, often being published simultaneously with the five corresponding anime series. The anime series would only lag the manga by a month or two.The complete original manga spans 52 issues, known as Acts, as well as ten separate side-stories. Its main series was serialized in Nakayoshi, Kodansha's shōjo magazine, from 1991 to 1995; the side-stories were serialized in Kodansha's Run Run.
The entire series has been published in book form by Kodansha. The first edition came out as the series was being produced, from 1992 until 1997, and consisted of 18 volumes with all the Acts and side stories in the order in which they had been released. The second edition, called the shinsōban or "renewal" edition, began in 2003 when the live-action series was running. The individual Acts were redistributed so that there are more per book, and some corrections and updates were made to the dialogue and drawings. New art was featured as well, including completely new cover art and character sketches (including characters unique to the live-action series). In all, the new edition consists of 12 story volumes and two separate "short story" volumes.

The anime's original series logo, which officially translates to "Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon"Main article: Sailor Moon (anime)
The Sailor Moon anime was produced by Toei Animation, and started airing only a month after the first issue of the manga was published. With 200 episodes airing from March 1992 to February 1997 on TV Asahi, Sailor Moon is one of the longest magical girl anime series. The anime sparked a highly successful merchandising campaign of over 5000 items, which contributed to demand all over the world and translation into numerous languages. Sailor Moon has since become one of the most famous anime properties in the world.
Strictly speaking, Sailor Moon is an anime metaseries. It consists of five separate series averaging around 40 episodes each, often referred to as seasons by North American fans because of the over-arching storyline. Each series roughly corresponds to one of the five major story arcs of the manga, following the same general storyline and including most of the same characters. There were also three theatrically-released movies, as well as four special animated shorts. The series saw many adaptations into other languages, but not all episodes were always included, such as with the English-language releases.
Music for the series was written and composed by numerous people, including the series' creator. All of the background musical scores were composed and arranged by Takanori Arisawa, who won several awards due to the popularity of the various soundtracks in Japan and other countries. Over 40 Japanese-language music albums based on the series were released, as well as some 33 CD singles. In North America, only three CDs albums were released.
Traditional animation techniques were used throughout the series. The series was directed first by Junichi Satō, then by Kunihiko Ikuhara and later by Takuya Igarashi. Character design was headed by Kazuko Tadano, Ikuko Itoh and Katsumi Tamegai, all of whom were also animation directors.

The musical stage shows, usually referred to collectively as SeraMyu, were a series of live theatre productions that played over 800 performances in some 29 musicals between 1993 and 2005. The stories of the shows include anime-inspired plotlines as well as a large amount of original material. Music from the series has been released on about 20 "memorial" albums.
Musicals ran twice a year, in the winter and in the summer. In the summer, the only venue for the musicals was the Sunshine Theatre in the Ikebukuro area of Tokyo; however, in the winter it went on tour to the other large cities in Japan.
The final incarnation of the series, The New Legend of Kaguya Island (Revised Edition),Shin Kaguyashima Densetsu (Kaiteban)?), was staged in January 2005. After that show, the series went on a hiatus. There have been no signs that the show will continue.

A tokusatsu (live-action) version of Sailor Moon was broadcast from October 4, 2003, through September 25, 2004. The series is known officially as Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (usually abbreviated to PGSM by fans), and it is the first series in the franchise to have a complete English-language title. It lasted a total of 49 episodes, and the broadcast originated from the Tokyo Broadcasting System. Numerous other television stations in Japan retransmitted the series.
The series' storyline more closely follows the original manga than the anime at first, but in later episodes it proceeds into a significantly different storyline from either, with original characters and new plot developments.
In addition to the main episodes, there were two direct-to-video releases after the show ended its television broadcast. These were the "Special Act", which is set four years after the main storyline ends and which shows the wedding of the two main characters, and "Act Zero", a prequel which shows the origins of Sailor V and Tuxedo Mask.
Video games

Numerous Sailor Moon console and arcade games were released in Japan, all based on the anime series. They were primarily made by Bandai and a Japanese game company called Angel, with some being produced by Banpresto. The early games were side-scrolling fighters, whereas the later ones were unique puzzle games, or versus fighting games. Another Story was a turn-based role-playing game.
The games mainly saw release on the Super Famicom, with the first side-scroller being ported to the Sega Mega Drive. Two side-scrolling adventure games were produced for the Game Boy (Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon R), and a side-scrolling game was also produced for the Game Gear (Sailor Moon S), as well as a game for the PC Engine. A final versus fighting game was released for the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation. The last Sailor Moon-related game to date was released in November 2001 - Happy Chibiusa World. There was a rumored game for the Wii console in development by NAMCO with the working title of "Sailor Moon" but this turned out to be just a rumour.
The only original Sailor Moon game to be released outside of Japan was the Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon game developed by Angel, released in France as "Sailormoon" in 1994.The other games are hard to find in any other country, unless downloaded from the internet as ROMs, some of which have been translated into languages other than Japanese.
A handful of games were produced in North America, including "The 3D Adventures of Sailor Moon".

English-dubbed anime
After a bidding war between Toon Makers and DiC Entertainment, DiC (which at the time was owned by The Walt Disney Company) acquired the rights to the first 72 episodes of Sailor Moon, consisting of the entire first series and two-thirds of Sailor Moon R. Through the omission of 6 episodes and the merging of two, the total episode count was reduced to 65, the minimum number of episodes required for strip syndication on US television. The remaining episodes were each cut by several minutes to make room for more commercials, to censor plot points or visuals deemed inappropriate for children, and to allow the insertion of "educational" segments called "Sailor Says" at the end of each episode. The remaining 17 episodes of Sailor Moon R were adapted later, and were treated in much the same way.
The English adaptations by Optimum Productions for Cloverway of Sailor Moon S and Sailor Moon SuperS (the third and fourth series) stayed relatively close to the original Japanese versions, and no episodes were skipped or merged.
The fifth and final series, Sailor Stars, has never been licensed for adaptation into English. As of May 2004, the rest of the metaseries has officially gone off the air in all English-speaking countries due to lapsed licenses which have not been renewed.
