The Japenese opening to the Tales of Symphonia Game "Starry Heavens"


It begins in the world of Sylvarant, a land that is dying due to a steady loss of mana, the energy source that is needed both for magic and to support life itself. As the crops begin to wither and hardship sets in, the people turn their hopes to the Chosen One, a servant and messiah of the Goddess Martel, who can reverse the ills of the world by completing the Journey of World Regeneration. The current Chosen is a girl named Colette Brunel, who is protected by her childhood friends Lloyd Irving and Genis Sage, her teacher and Genis' older sister Raine Sage, and Kratos Aurion, a mercenary with a mysterious past. Later on in the game, the party is joined by four other people: Presea Combatir, a strong but strange girl; Zelos Wilder, an arrogant playboy that is the Chosen One for Tethe'alla, the other world; Sheena Fujibayashi, a female ninja; and Regal Bryant, an ex-convict.Such a quest is undertaken when the world is in an extreme state of decline. In order to regenerate the world, the Chosen must travel from continent to continent, awakening the Summon Spirits that sleep at ancient shrines known as "seals". With every seal released, the Chosen comes closer and closer to becoming an angel. Once the Chosen fully transforms into an angel, the world will be regenerated.As the game progresses, many revelations are made about the subject of World Regeneration and the hidden plots that complicate the scenario. One of the earliest revelations is that becoming an angel forces the Chosen to give up the aspects of himself or herself that make him or her human. With the first seal, the Chosen loses the need to eat; with the second, he or she can no longer sleep. The release of the third seal causes the Chosen to lose the ability to feel physical sensations altogether. After releasing the fourth seal, the Chosen can no longer speak. The fifth and final seal requires the Chosen to give up his or her heart and memory and, with them, his or her life. When this process has been completed, the Chosen's body will become one with the goddess Martel.The party also learns of a second world, known as Tethe'alla, which lies parallel to Sylvarant. It is then revealed that replenishing the Sylvarant's supply of mana changes the flow of mana, thereby draining it away from Tethe'alla - much like the sand in an hourglass. The reverse also holds true. As the worlds of Sylvarant and Tethe'alla must compete for a limited amount of mana to survive, whenever one of these two worlds is regenerated, the other falls into a state of mana deprivation.

Long ago, Sylvarant and Tethe'alla were united as a single world that drew strength from the Giant Kharlan Tree. Divine intervention tore them apart, however, and the Tree withered and died. It was eventually left to a boy named Lloyd to restore the world to its true form. At his journey's end, a new Tree was planted to replace the Giant Kharlan Tree and to hold the two worlds together. This was the story of the Journey of Regeneration. Together once more, the world is now entering a new era. However, its people are still faced with many problems. After the lands became one, maps were rendered useless and the climate went through many vast changes: desert towns became frozen wastelands and lakes dried up into valleys. All of this stems from an overlooked factor in the unification of the worlds: the spirit of the old Kharlan Tree, Ratatosk, still exists somewhere, and its slumber has sent the world into chaos. However, Ratatosk isn't the only problem: the people of the two worlds are starting to hate each other. The citizens of Tethe'alla look down upon the citizens of Sylvarant due to their inferior technology, and the citizens of Sylvarant fear the citizens of Tethe'alla because of their power. Two years have passed since the worlds were first merged, and the people of Sylvarant have created a vanguard with which to rise against the Church of Martel and the people of Tethe'alla. One day, the Church of Martel went to war with the vanguard, and Sylvarant's city of Palmacosta was caught in the crossfire. Countless innocent people died and Palmacosta was consumed in a terrible fire. This event came to be known as the "Purge of Blood", a massacre led by Lloyd Irving of the Church of Martel. Emil lost his parents in the blood purging of Palmacosta. An honest, somewhat naïve boy, Emil is a bit of a coward, and he does not like to make decisions. One day he hears a monster's cry in the distance. Feeling like it is calling out to him, he leaves the village on his own to investigate. There he meets Marta. She seems to know Emil, though he cannot recall ever having met her before. Whenever he fights his eyes turn red and his personality changes into that of a cruel fighter, causing some to see him as a monster.Marta lost her mother during the Great Kharlan Tree's rampage. She tends to think along right-and-wrong lines. A bit of a tomboy, Marta is passionate about getting her way. On the left side of her forehead lies the Ratatosk Core, imprisoned in a dormant state. Emil became her guardian knight in order to protect her and the Ratatosk Core. Richter is a young man on a journey to find the Ratatosk Core. Since he was oppressed as a child, he now hates those that oppress others; he also hates those who do not stand up for themselves. His extremely distrusting nature causes him to be harsh in order to see his goals met. He first encounters Emil while saving him from being bullied. Although the boy's timidity and passiveness irritate him, he resolves to teach him the basics of fighting. Tenebrae is a Centurion Spirit of Ratatosk that is highly attuned to the forces of darkness. He appears before Emil, and the two agree to a contract that turns the boy into a Knight of Ratatosk. Although Tenebrae came from another world, he has since lost much of his power, so he is unable to return home. He is a very calm, composed, and serious being, though he has been known to make the occasional joke. He is very loyal to Marta, who carries the Ratatosk Core on her forehead.Aqua is a Centurion Spirit of Ratatosk that is highly attuned to the forces of water. She, like Richter, seeks to obtain the Ratatosk Core, so she agrees to form a contract with him. Alice is the leader of the Vanguard's combat squad. Despite her childlike appearance, she is a very mean-spirited young woman. She treats Decus like a servant, and she has a penchant for riding beasts into battle.Decus is a young man who is smitten with Alice; he joined the Vanguard for the sole purpose of wooing her. He has been known to use exotic perfumes in his attempts to charm her
