Aoyama Thelma (青山テルマ) is a Japanese R&B artist who debuted in 2007. She is one quarter Trinidadian. She is famous for her collaboration song with SoulJa: Koko ni Iru yo and her answer song, Soba ni Iru ne (which reached #1 on Oricon charts in its second week).
When Aoyama was three years old, she took an interest in dancing while watching Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation music video. She spent six years at Osaka International School as an elementary school student. When Aoyama was ten years old, she discovered gospel and developed an interest in singing. At twelve years old, her family moved to Los Angeles for two years. She returned to Japan in the winter of 2002. Her family settled in Tokyo. Aoyama attended the American School in Japan. She also began to take vocal lessons. Currently, Aoyama is studying at a university.


Aoyama's first release in the music world was a collaboration single with DS455's single, SUMMER PARADISE ~Risin' To Tha Sun~ feat. Aoyama Thelma. The single reached #46 on the Oricon charts. On September 9, 2008, Aoyama made her solo debut with the single, ONE WAY. The single debuted at #98 on the Oricon charts. Two weeks later, Aoyama was featured on the hit single, Koko ni Iru yo, with fellow J-R&B artist, SoulJa. The single was a long charting hit; despite only reaching #6, it has sold over 100,000 copies.

Aoyama released an answer single to this in early 2008, Soba ni Iru ne which featured SoulJa. The songs are similar, and both share the same chorus. Soba ni Iru ne proved to be even more popular than Koko ni Iru yo, debuting at #3 in its first week and in its second reaching #1 on Oricon charts. Soba ni Iru ne stayed in the top 5 for 7 consecutive weeks, its popularity further fueled by its use in March as the NTT Docomo CM song after the single was released. As of May 2008 it is currently the highest selling single of 2008.

Thelma Aoyama will sing a theme song for an upcoming drama titled “Q.E.D.”

This drama was first announced on September. This new drama is from a manga.

Aoyama’s new song is a ballad, which is titled “Konomama Zutto” and is also her first single of 2009. It will fly off shelves on March.

This upcoming drama is about a young prodigy named Toma, which is from an American university at the age of 15. While he hangs out with a cheerful and energetic high schooler they both end up solving mysteries together.

Nakamuro Aoi and Takahashi Ai both star in this new drama.

Thelma Aoyama Covers Miho Nakayama For "Cafe Kichijoji"theme

R&B artist Thelma Aoyama will be providing the theme song for TV Tokyo's live-action "Cafe Kichijoji de" series, starting on September 29. The song is a cover of the 1988 hit "You're My Only Shinin' Star," originally sung by actress/idol Miho Nakayama.

"You're My Only Shinin' Star" was Nakayama's 12th single and her second to reach #1 on the Oricon charts.

The single for Aoyama's version is scheduled to go on sale later this year.

Thelma Aoyama sets a Guinness World Record

Thelma Aoyama's hit "Soba ni Iru ne" is currently the best-selling song as a full mobile download (chaku-uta) in Japan. That title has now been officially recognized by the Guinness World Records, and Aoyama has been presented with her certificate.

"Soba ni Iru ne" was released in January and had been downloaded to mobile phones 2 million times as of July, when the application was filed with Guinness. The song currently stands at a total of 8.2 million downloads across various formats, including 3.55 million chaku-uta downloads and 2.15 million chaku-uta full downloads. The CD release was the top-selling single for the first half of 2008.

Thelma Aoyama unveils "Team Batista" song

Thelma Aoyama already has one drama theme song on the air - for the TV Tokyo series "Cafe Kichijoji de" - but starting next month she will have another. Her "Mamoritai Mono" will be used in the Fuji TV drama "Team Batista no Eikou," which starts on October 14.

Aoyama publicly performed the song for the first time during a concert in Hong Kong on Saturday. The single goes on sale November 12.

Team Batista No Eiko is about a legendary team of surgical experts in Tojo University Hospital that specializes in the Batista procedure - one of the most difficult cardiac surgeries with the survival rate only at 60%. Ever since its formation, this team has shocked the country by having 26 consecutive post-operative successes, virtually unheard of in the medical community. They basked in the glory until one day when three recent procedures produced consecutive deaths on the operating table. Taguchi, an internal medicine specialist has been entrusted with the investigation but since he is dealing with skills beyond his realm of expertise, he soon brushes off speculations of murder and deems the deaths accidents. Then arrives Shiratori, a Ministry of Health investigator. He not only labels Taguchi naive but speaks with confidence that this is a murder, and the murderer is within this team of elites. As the mystery unfolds, so does the complicated affiliation between each of the seven team members, will the duo discover the truth in time?
