I can never really enjoy being famous. -Utada Hikaru
PROFILE
Date of Birth:January 19, 1983
"The same birthday is shared by writer/poet Edgar Allan Poe, with whom I fell in love during my junior-high years; Ogai Mori, one of Japan's literary geniuses; cute Udo Suzuki-san; and even cuter Rika Ishikawa-chan. My Toshiba EMI senior Yuming, Makoto Kawamoto were also born on this day. It's a singer/songwriter birthday!"
Hobbies:
"- Literature will always be my thing. Books are assets to be treasured - I keep every book I read, and they now take up more space than my clothes.
- Hot and spicy seasonings and condiments
- Snapping pictures, without warning, of friends when they're having hungovers or snoozing.
- Late-night web-crawling. I learned of a few cool sites from an EMI recording engineer --- [Modern Living] and [otogaiworld] are definitely worth checking out, especially in the wee hours"
Specialties:
"Touch typing, Tetris, biting the bullet, reading minds, moving just the smallest toe of my left foot, full leg splits and other instances of flexibility."
Dream:
"Become a writer (I picked my pseudonym a long time ago), open a small bookshop and become a clerk there, work part-time at a cafe."
Favorite Sayings:
Kinomi kinomama (with only the clothes one happens to be wearing, with the barest necessities), Shogyo mujo (all is vanity), Fuyukai da kaeru! ("I am not liking this and I'm goin' home!"), munya munya, "I will not play at tug o' war. I'd rather play at hug o' war ...." - Shel Silverstein

Utada Hikaru (宇多田ヒカル, Utada Hikaru born January 19, 1983), also known by her fan-nickname of Hikki (ヒッキー, Hikkī), is a Japanese American pop singer-songwriter, arranger and record producer. Her proper Japanese-language debut album, First Love, released in March 1999 when she had just turned 16, charted at #1 for an astonishing six non-consecutive weeks on the Oricon Albums chart, and went on to become the best-selling album of all time in Japan with over 7.65 million copies sold to date in Japan alone (10.056 million worldwide to date), cementing her status in the music industry in Japan. The release of her later works only help her reign as one of Japan's top artist, with three of her Japanese studio albums being rank in the Top 10 all-time best-selling albums in Japan ranking (#1, #4, #8), making her one of the most indefinitely successful and popular singers in J-pop history. She has had 12 #1 hits to date on the Oricon Singles chart, with a record five of them being million-sellers and four placing in the Top 100 List of Japan's All-Time Best-selling Singles (the former record for a female solo or group artist she has tied with Namie Amuro, Ayumi Hamasaki, and Pink Lady). In addition, Hikaru has won the Nihon Golden Disk "Song of the Year" award for fourteen of her singles since 2000 and has won the Golden Disc "Pop/Rock Album of the Year" award for all four of her Japanese studio albums. In 2003 Utada Hikaru was ranked the #24 Japanese pop artist in its survey of "Top 100 Japanese Pop Artists of All Time" by HMV, and #10 in HMV's "Top 30 Best Japanese Singers of All Time" in 2006.

When I start making a song, for one second I see an amazing view—and in that instant, it cracks and falls to pieces. Then the rest of the process is trying to put the pieces back together. So when it feels familiar, when I see what I saw in that moment the song was conceived, then I know it’s done.—Utada

There's a new English press release from Monsters & Critics regarding Utada's new English album. According to the article, Utada said: “I like to make music that’s mutli-layered. You might just want to dance, without really diving into the lyrics. And then if you like words, you might notice the references I make to Captain Picard or Winona Ryder. Both things are equally important to me—to be catchy, so when you hear it on the radio it sticks out, and to have that depth. "
Check out another press release from Island Records, delving more into Utada's background information as well as the process behind her new album.
