[Spoiler Alert]
The Kunryongwe are an elite group of soldiers that are trained from a very early age in combat with the sole purpose of protecting the King of Goryeo. Many of the higher ranking officials are discontented and are loyal to the Yuan dynasty that is trying to undermine the Goryeo. Since the kings is unable to provide an heir to the throne Yuan demands the cousin of the king be placed as the Crowned Prince but the king refuses. Hung Lim, the commander of Kunryongwe is the kings homosexual lover but is requested to sleep with the Queen in order to provide and heir. Initially this is quite an ordeal for Hung Lim and the Queen however things soon change and the couple become lovers.
The King, suspecting the worst, tells the couple that for now the consummation must stop, the couple agree but continue to see each other without the Kings knowledge or consent. The movie focuses for a while on the traitors within the palace and there ultimate demise at the hands of the Kunryongwe. Eventually of course, as one might expect, the King discovers Hung Lim and the Queen in the library in the midst of passion and takes some quite draconian action to ensure this never happens again.
While Hung Lim is locked up the King learns the Queen has since conceived, to cover his humiliation and dishonour the King orders all those with knowledge of the events should be beheaded. Hung Lim escapes with the help of some loyal friends but later returns fearing for the safety of the Queen. While approaching the palace he sees several heads on spikes from outside the palace walls and mistakenly believes the queen to be among them fuelling his vengeance. The inevitable moment of justice is soon upon us although the audience will no doubt be left wanting as in so many of these bitter sweet Korean romances.
