Momoko + Miyabi + Airi = Buono!
I was given pretty rare change to interview the girls of Buono! a day before the concert. In Nolife Tv's small studio room I sitted opposite to the girls. The distance between us was about 1 meter - 1 1/2 meters. You could have called the situation intimate if few Buono!'s tour concert staff's videomens plus the NoLife's videographer wouldn't hover in the background recording the interview with their own cameras.
You have been in Paris for one and a half days now. What have you already managed to do during this time?
- Before we arrived to Paris one of our dreams was to shop in the glorious boutiques of Paris, and now we had enough time to walk around the city, Miya starts.
What kind of purchases did you already make?
- The timing was good because valentine's day is coming soon, right. For example, I found a jacket and sweater for myself, Miya lists.
- We also made many Valentine's Day-related purchases, Momo adds.
This is your first trip to Paris and Europe. What kind of feelings are you having now of all the experiences here?
- We have wanted to go to Paris for a long time and finally our dream came true. It isn't very easy to travel here from all the way from Japan, because you have to sit in the airplane for so many hours. However, it was worth of it. We have eaten french delicacies and the croisants are really delicious here, Airi says excitedly.
When I ask would Buono! like to perform even more here in Europe, I get an affirmative answer.
Next I asked would they have any particular countries they would like to visit.
- In Finland of course, the answer comes in unison.
- In Italy too, of course. Because the name of our group comes from Italian language after all. And in Italy we could eat the original pizza, Airi says.
Buono! has been together almost for 5 years now. What do you think were the best moments during all those years?
- Many great things has happened to us so we also have many nice memories of out a five-year history. Maybe this, that we are now in France for as the most recent experience is after all the the most favorite thing, what has happened to Buono!, Momo thinks.
- Especially the times in concerts when some of the member happens to have a birthday and the audience greets and congratulates the birthday girl wawing the glowsticks stick in the mind, Miya says.
Just like jpop artists generally do, the members of Buono! also have their own theme color.
For Momochi it is pink, red for Miya and green for Airi. So for example, in Momochi's birthday the audience is one pink light sea.
Why is Buono! so wonderful?
- Because I am the leader of this group, Momochi says with her most charming voice.
The answer causes roars of laughter, wich continues with more laughter when I say that I understand her point.
How would you describe Buono!'s musical style? I think it's not pure jpop.
- Our music is rock-music. Buono! is rock, Airi says firmly.
- The best thing about Buono! is that even we are idol, we still play rock, Miya adds.
The reason why I like Buono! myself, is linked to that fact Miya just told. Buono! is not exactly normal jpop-group. The rock-dimension makes it interesting and musically versatile.
What are your own favorites from all the Buono!'s songs.
- That was really hard question, Airi complains.
- One of my favorites could maybe be our newest single Hatsukoi Cider, because it has so cool video. One of the biggest favorites of mine is however MY BOY, Miya says.
I agree with her. One of the best videos so far from Buono! is MY BOY. It got clear story in it and it has been filmed in the milieu of old castle.
Next I give a task for the girls to describe each other. Miya tells about Momochi first.
- I actually don't see her as a leader of the group. We are all our own kind of invidual and we just want to have fun. Momochi is good comedian. She is true genius in that, Miya reveals.
Momochi, could you maybe show how genius you are as comedian?
- What should I do now? Maybe I could show you a sign, wich is right now really well known in Japan. Are you ready? Momo asks.
I inform that I am ready and Momochi says "Yurushite Nyan" while making a gesture with her hands, wich looks like uplifting cats paws scrabbling in the air. I have watched a lot of recordings of japanese tv-shows and lately Momoko has excelled to show that super kawaii yurushite nyan - sign almost in every turn she gets. She has kinda like lancered this gesture. That she says this sentence in apologetically and in the most adorable voice as possible is part of it. So I tell her I've seen her doing this gesture countless times but especially now it seems to be very cute. Momochi gets so exited about it that she asks if I think she is the cutest girl in Buono!. I answer to her question saying that I won't comment, and that causes laughter among the girls. Then it's Momochi's turn to tell something about Airi.
- Airi is a good singer. I am the most cutest out of everyone for sure, but Airi is the best singer, Momo says.
Lastly Airi reveals what kind of person Miya really is.
- first you would think that Miya is really strong person, but she also has her fragile side. Secondly you will notice how unique singing and dancing style Miya has. The third thing about Miya is her excellent sense of fashion and clothes, Airi lists.
How do you see Buono!'s role compared to your the so-called main groups, Berryz Kobo and C-ute? Is Buono! only a side project for you?
- Buono! is real group. We make regularly CD releases and concerts and we have a band with us in concerts. The biggest difference between us and Berryz Koubou & C-ute is exactly that Buono! performs in concerts with a real rock band. It feels like the audience is more wilder and more rocking in Buono!'s concerts than in those other groups concerts, the girls tell.
The members of Buono! doesn't play any instruments in concerts themselves. The background band Dolce handles the playing. But after all my one dream has been for a long time now that the girls would learn how to play their own instruments so well, that they could perform in concerts as a real band themselves.
- I think I know what you mean. Few years ago in one tour we were fake playing some instruments in the opening of one song. Who knows, maybe some day we will play in our concerts for real, Airi says.
When I mention that I know Momochi own acoustic guitar and she has also played it, she admits it while laughing and says she wants to become as famous as Michael Jacson. What kind of songs does Momochi play with her guitar? Everyone starts to yell out one japanese kids song called Kero kero. So Momochi has started her studies how to play guitar from children's songs. Maybe next she will play Buono!'s music when she improves a bit first.
I say that I've seen her performing this frog son earlier in one Fanclub DVD, wich makes Momochi exited to wonder that I actually might me crazy about her. When I asked her why does she think so, she says it's obvious because my face is all red. As expected, everyone in the room burst into laughter, including me.
My time for the interview started to run out, so I added just one bit more serious question: "What are you feelings about the big tsunami and earth quake that happened year ago? Where were you when this disaster happened?".
-In the time when it happened, Buono! wasn't gathered together. Berryz Koubou was practising for their spring tour back then for example.
In retrospect, the disaster affected widely to Japan, and also for other countries as well. But now things are moving to better direction. It has been great to notice how people from al over the world have supported Japan and helped us with their own contribution to survive from that huge disaster. We have received more power and believe for the future also because of you too, Momo says.
Of course the 25 minutes I had ended up way too soon and I never asked the half of the questions I had thinked about for them. Lastly I shared small gifts for the girls, and when Airi got hers she said "Angry birds!". And what comes to me, I got autographed photo and Buono!'s REAL- spring tour schedule/show (?) booklet. Arigatous, then handshakes, then another arigatous, and then finally Bye byes.
I finally started to realize everything what had happened during this weekend in the plane somewhere between Paris and Helsinki.
On May 25, Buono! will release a photobook about their Paris concert titled "C'est bon!"

It seems that it's their Summer tour, though the title still have to be announced at the moment. Can we expect a Rock'n'Buono! 5?

The ultrakawaii J-pop unit was in concert in Paris back February. We met Momoko TSUGUNAGA, Miyabi NATSUYAKI and Airi SUZUKI just before that unique concert date.
You did a concert in Paris in the Machine du Moulin Rouge room. How did you felt before the concert ?
Airi : We were a bit stressed at first ; it was the first time we were singing overseas. But when we saw people saying welcome, it gave us so many courage and energy.
Miyabi : Airi and me stayed in the same hotel room to practice for the concert.
Airi : For this overseas travel I took a little dictionnary with me and I tried to familiarize myself with the language. Even if French is a difficult language, I know how to say words such as "Bonjour", "Merci" or "S'il vous plaît". We do our best !
Can you tell us a bit about the Paris Collection best-of regrouping all your hits ?
We're very happy to see our band name linked with an event such as Paris Collection. It allowed us to travel and discover France. We're here for only few days but we're already inlove with Paris. We want to come back, and why not staying in your lovely country !
With a title like that, you may be fashion addicts ?
We're fascinated by french fashion. We were surprised to see how much people from Paris are classy. The girls have long legs which allow us to be superb with simple clothes. For us, it'll be complicated to find a great size here ! (laugh) Besides that, if you come to Japan, we advice you to visit Kyoto, famous for its clothes materials.
Concretely, what does "Buono!" mean ?
It comes from the Italian. Yep, the name of our band means "delicious" ! (laughs)
You're all coming from different bands. How have you managed to mix your universes in Buono! ?
It wasn't complicated. There was unknown parts that we were able to exploit. Everything was opened to build "Buono!". We adapted ourselves to move forward in the same direction.
In 2007, you interpreted the songs for the anime Shugo Chara!, can we say that it was the start point ?
Indeed. Buono!'s adventure was born thanks to that anime. The lyrics of one of Shugo Chara! song titled "Kokoro no Tamago" illustrate it perfectly.
In 2011 you were the stars of the horror movie Gomennasai for which you interpret the theme song "DEEP MIND". What kind of memories do you have about it ?
We all took stageplay lessons and practiced a lot before the filming. Plus, "DEEP MIND" is a hard track, dynamical, almost "agressive". It's been awhile we didn't have a track as dynamical as this one !
Miyabi : In that horror movie, I'm unrecognizable. I've got long and black hair ; my make-up is also different. But don't imaginate that I'm like that in real life ! I sincerely prefer my "casual" appearence. (laugh)
What are you hobbies ?
Miyabi : I like to create my own accessories. For exemple, it's me who created that ring (showing her hand). I also like to do shopping. For each concert, I change my nail color ; here, I put red with little sparkles !
Airi : I have a tons of hobbies, it's difficulte to choose one. I knit and I play guitar.
Momoko : I like to eat and I'm ready to take hundreds of croissants in Japan ! (laughs)
You also participated in a lot of commercials in Japan.
Momoko : My "Yurushite Nyan" expression is popular in Japan. I'd love my exuberant and annoying personnality to be used in one commercial in France !
Since 2009, you're doing so much concert tours. Do you have some anecdotes ?
Momoko : I have the habit to almost always fall before going on stage. Watch our DVD, you'll understand that better... And when it happens, everyone can see my butt ! In that type of moments, I need a charming prince who can carry me to avoid that type of accidents... (laughs)
How did you prepare yourself for a concert ?
We're idols, so we need to take care of our health. Inside the band, our method is to eat... ginger. It's efficient and that brings us back upright.
Do you have any message to transmit to your French fans ?
France welcomed us for our first live overseas, so this country will always have a particulary place inside our heart. We'll come back, but dressed in a better way ! (laughs) Next time, we have to give more of our time to our fans. You too, come visiting our wonderful country, eating sushins, rice, nikujaga, miso soup and having fun in karaoké !
You're young but already popular. How do you see yourself in the future ?
It's true that we're lucky, but we worked hard !
Momoko : I'd be Mickael JACKSON's feminine equivalent. You'd have to follow my career in a closer way from now! (laughs)
Airi : Since I'm a little girl, I love to sing. In few years, I'd be in music and I'd love to do some concerts in several countries.
Miyabi : I'm crazy about clothes. I'd love to open my shop and design my own brand.

Q. "Hatsukoi Cider" is a rather happy song, what was your reaction when you heard it?
Airi Suzuki : It remind me of Buono!'s old days, so I immediately liked it.
Momoko Tsugunaga : I thought "Buono! is back to pop rock"! and after "How we'll do a CM with cider?" (lol).
Miyabi Natsuyaki : That was refreshing, there's a taste of rock in the chant. It was fun to sing and feeling this freedom (probably talking about the MV filming).
Airi : But wasn't it hard because the key was really high?
Momo : The harmony was really difficult too! I had the main - probably her solo part in the middle of the song - and that was really difficult to sing alone as if it were 2 people singing. ???? (lol).
Q. Indeed (lol). So the lyrics are talking about a girl who wants to love passionately?
Momo : Yes it is. The sentence "KISU wo ageruyo Ima sara suki nante Kotoba yori kikime aru deshou " (I'll give you a kiss to tell you how much I love you after all this time instead of words, that'll send this message clearly, right?) is particulary great.
Airi : They are really cool eh.
Miya : But does today's mens are attracted by this type of passionnate message? (??)
Momo : Every girl in the world, on Valentine's day, please say this sentence all the way! (lol)
Q. About the other song "DEEP MIND". The speed is really different in that song and the high-tension feeling is considerable.
Airi : This one is also so rock!
Miya : I thought "That's clearly the opposite of Hatsukoi Cider!!"
Airi : This song is also for our film "Gomen Nasai" so we spent a lot of time singing this one during filming etc. There was a film + song mixed feeling in my head.
Q. Speaking about that, since the song is talking about DEEP MIND, what's the hidden face of each members?
Airi : ???? Momochi's musubi? lol. Miya does have a really nice skin! But you can only see it if you're next to her.
Momo : Miya is tsundere (a bad girl) but she can suddenly be a really joyfull girl. (lol) Airin, when she say a pun, she's always having a proud face no matter people's reactions.
Miya : Momochi's acting cute, but she does have really strong muscles! Even if she's small, she's powerful. Airin's putting people at ease when she's talking, she can dance in a very sexy way in live, that's really cool eh?
Q. To finish, please tell us about Buono!'s projects and wishes for 2012.
Airi : The new tour is coming for the beginning of this year, which is a really good start. Then in February Buono! will go overseas for the first time, in Europe in France, we'll be able to eat delicious croissants ♪
Miya : In this new tour we want to be able to give you more rock. The title “R・E・A・L” describe the fact that we want you to see 3 real personalities in front of you.
Momo : We have a single releasing in January, a new tour coming, a live in France, 2012 seems to be a good year for Buono! and all the fans. After that, there's personal goals to reach, to be cuter than Mana Ashida-chan (lol)
