Well, where can one start in a profile about him? I guess I'll go by how he's portrayed in each bunch of volumes. Kapeesh? Oh yeah theres a bunch of spoilers here too.
We first meet Fai in chapter 2, volume 1. He's a mysterious magician, from the magical land of Celes (or Ceres, Seresu, Seles, etc with the spelling). He seems a little scary at first, looks pretty serious when we first meet him, all surrounded [/orange]by his magic and fully garbed in his Celesian clothes. Mokona swallows 'em all up, and we're off to the first world, Hanshin Republic.
In Hanshin, we meet happy-happy joy-joy Fai, the personality a good majority of fans recognise. He's slightly wacky, always smiling, sometimes hyper but most of all, uber cute! *coughaqitrystosoundformalcough* So anyway, yes. Most fans see him as the happy-go-lucky Fai. Although throughout the manga, we see hints of a slightly darker Fai, a scary, shadowy, evil side. Or just his true self, behind the smile. This dark side is always overshadowed by the fact Fai did something REALLY bad back in Celes, and he's very upset about it. Of course, he tries his best to hide it and avoids answering any truthful questions about his past.
Fast forward to Tokyo, destroyed by the acid rain. The group is all close, and they're all stuck in the building in the eroding city.
This is where the story gets very interesting, and broke so many of our hearts. Syaoran, the brave young hero of our story, is in fact a clone. Yes, a clone. A duplicate of the apparently "real" Syaoran who was stuck in that glass tube thing for majority of the story. After a dangerous fight with vampire Kamui underwater to protect Sakura, Syaoran's crazy clone self takes over him, turning him into a heartless, souless hunter for Sakura's feathers. And because he will need a strong magical power for his hunt, Syaoran quite nicely rips Fai's left eye out of it's socket and eats it. Yummy. A great thank you to Fai, for all the nice stuff he's done. Poor guy.
That moment changed Fai quite a bit. A lot of truth has spilt out, and we've seen much more true emotion from him.
After his eye was ripped out, the shock from that could cause Fai to die. DIE. So Mokona nicely called up Yuuko and a price was paid to keep Fai alive. As a vampire. To live, he would have to drink some of Kurogane's blood every so often. Gorgeous.
