School system
Hyotei possesses an elevator system, meaning that provided one passes the exam at every level, students may move up the academic ladder from primary school to university. The school's headmaster is Teruzane Sakujii.
Curriculum
The curriculum at Hyotei allows students to choose their own subjects. Subjects are divided into "specialized" and "generalist" subjects in which, through the specialized subjects, students can expand their knowledge for a career in specialist related fields. It is up to the student to take specialized or generalist subjects.
The Study Abroad Program
In preparation of a multi-cultural society, Hyotei Gakuen has arranged the study abroad program. This allows students first-hand experience with over-seas students from the four sister schools Hyotei has around the world. Many find this a valuable experience and also find possible career paths through this rare experience.
Extra curricular activity
Hyotei also puts strength into its after-school sporting clubs and Student Council Chamber. By participating in these extra curricular activities, students are able to gain a wide range of experiences and responsibilities as a representative of Hyotei Gakuen.
Transport
When traveling to and from school, students must walk or make use of the bus or train. If, however, a parent or guardian is present, private transport methods can be arranged.
Tennis team
Hyotei's strength lies in its strict stratification and merit system, which prioritizes ability only rather than emotion. This allows for the members to reach their full potential. Hyotei is considered a rival school of Seishun Academy Middle School. The two teams compete against each other in the first match of the Kantō region Tournament and in the second match of the National Tournament.
With Keigo Atobe as their leader, Hyotei's tennis club is 200+ members strong. The coach, Tarou Sakaki, chooses the best players of the tennis club as the regulars and the others as assistant regulars. Usually the regulars start to play in the Kantō Tournament, although after losing to Fudomine Middle School, the regulars go up against St. Rudolph Gakuen for the 5th place in the Doh-Daikai.
Coach
Tarou Sakaki (榊 太郎, Sakaki Tarō?)
A 43-year-old music teacher at Hyotei who is very polite and elegant. As a good coach, Sakaki doesn't tolerate losses and knows how to motivate and push his players to the top. It's well known that Sakaki always keeps the best players for the important tournaments (such as Kantō and the Nationals) and plans the most favorable game strategies (i.e. the distribution of the singles-doubles places). He trusts in Atobe, knowing that Atobe is capable of leading the school name to first place.
His most known gesture is rising his hand and pointing with two fingers saying "Itteyoshi" ("You may go") when he finishes the advising with the players.
He states that he is "just" a music teacher. However, the regulars doubt the "just."
Regulars
Atobe Keigo
Character
Along with Kunimitsu Tezuka of Seigaku, Kippei Tachibana of Fudomine, and Genichirou Sanada and Seiichi Yukimura of Rikkaidai, Atobe is a "Zenkoku ku" (全国区, "Zenkoku ku"?), which means a national level player. He defeated Seigaku's captain in his second year, a favor returned when Tezuka then beat Hyotei's captain at the time. Hyotei is one of the few schools in the series without a vice-captain, an indication of both Atobe's skill and leadership.
Severely narcissistic and arrogant, his favorite quote is "Ore-sama no bigi ni yoi na" (俺様の美技に酔いな, "Ore-sama no bigi ni yoi na"? It translates more or less to, "Be awed at the sight of my prowess!"), used first after knocking out Tezuka's racket with his drive volley. It is revealed that many people started calling him "Atobe-sama" after this line. This quote has been used and adapted by the seiyū, Junichi Suwabe, in almost every situation Atobe appears outside the main story, and has since then become a long-running joke. For example, in the CD voice message, he says: "Be awed by the sound of my (singing) voice"; in one Radio Show mini-drama, he says: "Be awed by the sight of me drinking" prior to drinking an Inui-juice like drink; in another instance where he went hiking in the mountains and was playing with the echo, he says: "Be awed by the sound of my echo."
Atobe is considered the example of a perfect and complete all rounder as stated by Yamabuki's Sengoku showing Atobe's skills as a player.
It is common knowledge within the series that he is fabulously wealthy, showing in some episodes his various chateaus and mansions. One mountain estate is the setting of the Seigaku training arc shown only in the anime, in which Hyotei helps Seigaku prepare for its Kantō finals match with Rikkaidai. It is likely that the anime exaggerated his wealth, as he was shown to be progressively wealthier as the series goes on, to the extent that by the release of the mini-movie, he owns a huge blimp with a chibi replica of his own face on it, and enough funds to hold a convention in a gigantic, downtown stadium. However, the manga does depict him to own a helicopter.
This doesn't mean, however, that Atobe is just a pampered, self-centered diva without real qualities backing him up. He's very proud of being on top of the Hyotei team, and has earned his position through very hard work and real talent. He also truly appreciates the worth of both his teammates and rivals; this is shown when he stands up for fellow Hyotei regular Ryo Shishido's plight in front of coach Sakaki, when he recognizes Tezuka's might after their duel (even lifting Tezuka's hand to show him as someone who had fought hard and also deserved praising), and when he speaks to Echizen after his fight with Tezuka in the American arc. Atobe also mentions that while he doesn't mind going easy on an opponent, he hates it when opponents go easy on him. Furthermore, the aforementioned mini-movie (named "Atobe kara no Okurimono", roughly translated as "Atobe's mighty gift") shows that one of the reasons he had to hold the convention was to cheer up his childhood friend and partner Munehiro Kabaji, who was very depressed after the announcement of his beloved older sister's future marriage, which also coincided with Kabaji's birthday.
Even the games have portrayed Atobe as more noble than one would expect; in the dating sim Gakuensai no Ōjisama, Atobe is enraged when the main character (default name, Shizuka Hirose) is attacked by his most rabid fangirls, and not only lectures the player for NOT telling him about the incidents, but he also protects her from such fans and, if certain in-game circumstances are met, in the end he announces that Shizuka will be his girlfriend in front of the whole school. In another dating sim, Doki Doki Survival - Umibe no Secret, Atobe is shocked when he's bitten by a poisonous snake and the main girl (default name, Ayaka Tsujimoto) attempts to help him by directly sucking out the toxins from his injury, scolding her as well for taking such a risk after they're taken to safety.
Aside from his tennis club captaincy, Atobe is also student body president. He enjoys all subjects, especially Greek, and is a fan of the poetry of Goethe and Homer. It is also implied that he has an appreciation for classical composers such as Richard Wagner.
One of Atobe's characteristic is the mole below his right eye, known as a "tear-mole". He has a character song about the mole being his charm-point called "Chāmu Pointo ha Naki Hokuro" (チャームポイントは泣きホクロ, "Chāmu Pointo ha Naki Hokuro"? lit. "The charm-point is the tear-mole"), and coincidentally, the seiyū Junichi Suwabe also has a mole in the exact same position.
Due to a bet Atobe made with Ryoma, in which the loser had to shave his own hair, he supposedly had his head shaved by Ryoma after losing consciousness (in the anime, Atobe chooses to shave his own hair after losing). However, it is later revealed that Atobe did not get his head fully shaved, but rather just a short haircut. Shortly after, right before the National Finals, Atobe is shown with his normal haircut
Techniques
Rondo Towards Destruction
(破滅への輪舞曲, Hametsu e no rondo?)
The Rondo Towards Destruction is a powerful two-part smash requiring a lot of control on the ball. The first smash hits the wrist and knocks the racket out of the opponent's hand. As the ball bounces up from the force of impact, Atobe smashes it once again at the court to score the point. However, Tezuka and Ryoma both overcome the move by sliding the racket downward at the last moment and thus holding on to their grip.
In the Goodwill Games arc of the anime, Atobe develops a two-person Rondo Towards Detruction with Sanada - Tango Towards Destruction. As one player smashes the racket out of one opponent's hand, the second, point-scoring smash is delivered by the other player. However, it is unlikely that this move will reappear, as Sanada and Atobe are from different schools, and Atobe usually plays Singles 1.
Insight
While not necessarily a move, it is very useful, especially during Atobe's match with Tezuka. Supposedly gifted with fantastic eyesight, Atobe uses this in Insight, a move where he can quickly determine his opponent's weaknesses. He places his fingers between his widely opened eyes and laughs with a somewhat insane tone.
During the match against Tezuka, Atobe guesses wrongly that Tezuka's elbow is injured - a problem then solved, however, when Oishi replies, "No, Tezuka's elbow has healed!" Atobe's Insight is not limited to flaws, at least not in the anime. He sees Ryoma's "limitless potential" in the Training Camp arc and beholds no imperfections in Sanada during the Junior Senbatsu (Junior Invitational) arc.
In the Quarter Finals of the Nationals in his Singles 1 match against Seigaku's Echizen, Atobe used his insight to his full potential to the point where he could anticipate the spin of the tennis ball by looking at the way his opponent hits it. He was then able to apply a counterspin on the ball so that it no longer returns to Echizen when the latter used his own version of the Tezuka Zone.
Jack Knife
The Jack Knife is a fast, sharp and powerful high-leveled backhand shot made by using the front foot to jump into the air with balance while utilizing the weight of the body to achieve maximum strength. When Atobe uses the Jack Knife, he keeps the ball at his racket until the last moment to make it a strong shot. It is noted in the anime that the Jack Knife is a move no ordinary junior high student can do; only professionals are able to use the move successfully. Atobe first uses it in his match against Tezuka.
Tannhauser Serve
When performed correctly, the technique does not allow the ball to bounce, but it instead has the ball spin rapidly down the court, thus rendering it almost impossible to return. While no flaw is stated in the manga, in the anime, its flaw lies in that it places tremendous strain on the server's arm and shoulder. Atobe must exert enormous force in order for the move to come out correctly, thus he is slowly worn down during his serve. Also, in the anime, the serve was not fully seen until Atobe teams up with Sanada during the Goodwill Games with America, while in the manga, the Tannhauser serve was first seen by another Hyotei player, Oshitari Yuushi, who was able to find Atobe practicing in their school's tennis courts, and sees a brief execution of the serve. Also in the anime, it is said that the Tannhauser serve is a serve version of Shusuke Fuji's Tsubame Gaeshi, while in the manga, it is a version of Ryoma Echizen's Cool Drive.
Tannhauser is the subject of a German legend as well as one of Wagner's lesser known operas. According to the anime, Atobe relates as he too is privileged, but has a heart that cannot be satisfied.
Viking Horn
A powerful shot that first seems to go either left or right and then flies at the opposite side. Atobe can only use this technique when he's holding his racket backwards. He learns this shot from watching Kai from Higa Chuu's match against Eiji Kikumaru.
Higuma Otoshi (Bear Drop)
(羆落とし)
In his Nationals match against Ryoma, Atobe demonstrates his ability to use Higuma Otoshi, one of Shusuke Fuji's Triple Counters. By quickly rotating his body, Atobe uses centripetal force to absorb the force of any overhead smash; he then returns the ball with a lob that almost always lands on the opponent's baseline
Koori no Sekai (World of Ice)
(氷の世界, Koori no Sekai?)
All tennis players possess one if not more blind spots from any given position. Atobe has evolved his insight to such a level that he is able to clearly discern these spots, he is able hit balls with pinpoint accuracy and timing at these blind spots. Due to this recent evolution of his game, Atobe has supposedly surpassed Genichirou Sanada of Rikkaidai, at the time.
Koori no Sekai was proved to have one weakness. During the match between Atobe and Ryoma, Ryoma somehow duplicated Tezuka's Tezuka Zone and took control of the game. Atobe's World of Ice was weakened because the spins allowed by Ryoma's emulation of the Tezuka Zone caused Atobe's pinpoint returns to veer off course and out of Ryoma's blind spots
Yuushi Oshitari
(忍足 侑士, Oshitari Yūshi?), seiyū - Kiuchi Hidenobu musical actor-Takumi Saito
The Tensai (Genius) of Hyotei Gakuen. He can perform Higuma Otoshi (one of Shusuke Fuji's Triple Counters: Bear Drop) perfectly. He is called 'Oshitari of the one thousand skills'. He plays doubles with Gakuto Mukahi in the Kantō Tournament against the Eiji Kikumaru-Takeshi Momoshiro pair and singles in National Tournament against Takeshi Momoshiro, winning 6-4. Oshitari is originally from Kansai. Oshitari also plays the violin, as shown in the nationals OVAs. Oshitari has a cousin named Kenya who is a regular for Shitenhouji (Osaka), which plays Fudomine Middle School and Seigaku in the Nationals.
In the anime, Oshitari's Kansai accent was exaggerated, and this has been turned into a running joke most often seen in the Radio Shows and songs.
Along with Tezuka and Inui, they are known as the "Megane Trio" (Glasses Trio) and often performs songs and mini-dramas together. It was pointed out, however, that Oshitari does not actually need glasses as his eyesight is not faulty.
Jirou Akutagawa

(芥川 慈郎, Akutagawa Jirō?), seiyū - Ueda Yuuji musical actor - Takuya
Jirou is considered to be the "magic volleyer" of Hyotei Gakuen. His play style was inspired by Rikkai's Bunta Marui during a match two years ago. In the Regional Tournament, Jirou defeats Yuuta Fuji (Shusuke Fuji's younger brother), whom Ryoma had a considerably tough time facing, in only fifteen minutes. Later on, in the Kantō tournament, Jirou plays Shusuke Fuji. It is revealed that Jirou has very flexible wrists and can return almost any shot. In the end, however, he loses 6-1 against the third of Fuji's Triple Counters, Hakugei. When Jirou is not sleeping (which is rare), he's a very bouncy and happy guy, especially at the court when he's playing strong rivals like Fuji, Marui, or even Atobe. Also to Kaido, when he first saw the Boomerang Snake. He was, ironically, asleep the first time Hyotei saw the around-the-pole shot. However, because he spends most of his time sleeping, he's known as "The Sleeping Beauty of Hyotei".
Ryou Shishido
(宍戸 亮, Shishido Ryō?), seiyū - Kusuda Toshiyuki Musical Actor - Kenta Kamakari
After a humiliating defeat at the Tokyo Prefectural quarterfinals against Kippei Tachibana, Shishido is dropped from the regulars. Later, he comes back after defeating starter Haginosuke Taki. One of Shishido's sacrifices to prove his sincerity and that he was worthy of reinstatement is cutting off his precious long hair. He plays doubles with Chotarou Ootori and is known as Hyotei's "dash specialist" due to his speed and ability to return almost any ball. After spending all that time with Chotarou Ootori, Shishido has a special relationship with Ootori, and they have become great friends. He often says "gekidasa daze", which translates roughly to "way uncool" or "lame."
Gakuto Mukahi

(向日 岳人, Mukahi Gakuto?), seiyū - Hoshi Souichirou Musical Actor - Ruito Aoyagi
Gakuto is typically a doubles player who teams up with Yuushi Oshitari. He has acrobatic skills rivaling those of Seigaku's Eiji Kikumaru with his move the Moonsalut, in which he flips into the air. Although Gakuto's acrobatics are impressing, his stamina is too low so it is basically almost impossible for him to play games that require long endurance. In the Kantō tournament he teams up with Oshitari and loses to the Kikumaru-Momoshiro pair. In the Nationals he pairs up with Hiyoshi and again loses on the verge of victory.
Choutarou Ohtori

(鳳 長太郎, Ōtori Chōtarō?), seiyū - Namikawa Daisuke Musical Actor - Koji Date
Choutarou teams up with Ryou Shishido in both the Kantō and Nationals tournaments. In both games they barely win their matches. Choutarou has a very fast serve called the Scud Serve, which can go up to 200 km/h. While the Scud Serve is virtually unreturnable, it has limited accuracy until it is overcome by training with Shishido. In the nationals, he redubs it the Neo Scud Serve, which goes up to 215 km/h and goes in every time. Each time he serves, he recites "Ikyuunyuukon"( 一球入魂), which translates to "one shot to the soul!".
Wakashi Hiyoshi

(日吉 若, Hiyoshi Wakashi?), seiyū - Iwasaki Masami Musical Actor - Ryunosuke Kawaai
Hiyoshi uses an unorthodox style of tennis he dubs "Enbu Tennis", which combines martial arts with standard tennis. In the Kantō tournament, he ends up playing Ryoma and loses; in the Nationals he teams up with Gakuto and loses again. Hiyoshi's motto is "gekokujyou"(下克上) meaning "to defeat the greater and take his place". In the English manga 'gekokujyou' is translated as 'overthrow'. Hiyoshi is expected to be the next Hyotei captain after Atobe graduates.
Munehiro Kabaji

(樺地 崇弘, Kabaji Munehiro?), seiyū - Tsuruoka Satoshi Musical Actor - Ryo Washimi
Kabaji is a powerful hitter with a strange ability: he can copy the moves of anyone he faces. In the Kantō tournament, his match against Takashi Kawamura ends in a draw when both players injure their hands using the Hadokyuu, a move Kabaji copies after seeing Kawamura use it. He later plays Tezuka in the Nationals and loses when he can't control a form of the State of Self-Actualization (Tezuka's Hyaku Ren Jitoku no Kiwami). Kabaji is almost always seen together with his captain, Keigo Atobe, whom he has known since childhood. He rarely speaks and answers Atobe's questions only with "usu" (roughly translated as "yeah"). Kabaji also shaves his hair after the quarterfinals either because of his loss or in sympathy for Atobe.
