The story, which takes place in the fictional medieval empire of Saiunkoku, follows the adventures of Shūrei Kō, a descendant of a noble family that has fallen on hard times.

Her father works as a librarian in the Imperial palace, a post which offers prestige and respect, but little compensation. Shūrei teaches in the temple school and works odd jobs to make ends meet, but her dream is to pass the imperial examinations and take a post in government, a path forbidden to women.

Shūrei's plans come to an abrupt halt when the Emperor's Grand Advisor makes a startling offer, which is joining the imperial household for six months as the young Emperor's consort, and teach the Emperor to be a responsible ruler. If she succeeds, the financial reward will be great.

The story details Shūrei's growing relationships with the Emperor and other members of the court, the intrigues that surround imperial politics, and her commitment to better herself and her country.

Each province in Saiunkoku is ruled by a noble family of the same name. All eight provinces and families are named after colors.

---Ran (藍, Ran?, Blue) — The most powerful clan in Saiunkoku, although they play a dormant role in the political issues of the country.

---Kō (紅, Kō?, Red) — Equal power to that of the Ran clan. Along with the Ran clan, the Kō clan is known to be the 'highest of nobility'.

---Heki (碧, Heki?, Green)

---Kō (黄, Kō/Ki?, Yellow) — Although pronounced the same as the 'Red' (紅) clan, the kanji (黄) means 'yellow'.

---Haku (白, Haku ?, White)

your name is ryuuki and you have shoulder-length pink hair and pink eyes and you are 13.~~~~~quiz start~~~~~~you and your best friend ayame(long brown hair and green eyes and is 13 too.) were walking to school you look down at your watch and say,"ayame we're gonna be an hour early!" ayame looks up at the clock tower you guys just walked past and says,"oops... sorry ryuuki my alarm clock at home went off to early." you think since you dont want to stand around school for an hour when you can be finding cute guys so you say,"hey, why dont we go to the library i bet theres some cute guys there." ayame sighs and looks over at her boy crazy friend and says ,"sure why not." ~~~~~~~at the library~~~~~~~~~you and ryuuki go to the mythical constellations,gods,and goddesses section since you and ayame were doing a report for school on the book called "the universe of four gods" you look frantically through the shelves until you find it and say,"ayame look i found it and you sit on the floor and read the first page to ayame since she cant read old chinese and you can ,"this is the story of a girl, who made her dreams true after she came to possess the seven stars of suzaku, and many powers were bestowed upon her. the story itself is a spell. the one who reads it through will be given the powers and granted a wish just like the girl in the story. because... the story begins and comes real... the moment the first page is turned." all of a sudden a red light surrounds you and ayame and your both sent into the book and wake up after a while. ayame says,"and i thought i was the smart one." you look up to see a very cute guy with blue hair and blue eyes and you get up and say," im ryuuki and this is ayame we were brought here by reading a book called,"the universe of four gods" he says,"oh, well im tamahome and i dont see how you could have came here through a book but maybe hotohori could understand it." you say,"hotohori?" he says ,"he's the emporer(sp.?)" you say ,"oh you mean the emporer penguin." he says ,"he's not a penguin he's the emporer." ayame wakes up and comes over to you and tamahome. tamahome says ,"well come on if you want to see if hotohori can understand how you came here through a book." you and ayame follow tamahome but after a while you hear a growling and tamahome says,"wheres that noise coming from?" ayame says ," dont mind that noise its my stomach i havent eaten for two days." ~~~~~~~~~~at the castle~~~~~~~~~ tamahome brings you and ayame to hotohori and tamahome says ,"you see hotohori she says she came in through a book called "the universe of four gods" hotohori says ,"i have heard of that book i read it when i was a child im suprised it still works as a transporter to here." ayame says,"so we can get back right?!" hotohori says,"nope i forgot how to get back thats why i became emporer." hotohori says ,"but please stay the night but one of you will have to stay in tamhomes room." you and ayame look at each other and at the same time you both say ,"i will!!" then you two start arguing on who gets to stay in tamahomes room. tamahome comes over to both of you and says i'll let ryuuki stay in my room and let ayame stay with hotohori." tamahome says,"if that's alright with you hotohori?" hotohori says," alright fine." you look over at ayame and stick your tongue out at her and she does the same.how do you like hotohori and tamahome?

so you stay in tamahome's room and sleep on the floor~~~~~~~~morning~~~~~~~~~~~~you wake up and realize its already 9:00 in the morning and that tamahome is already outside waiting for you to ride horses you walk outside in a black silk kimono and your pink hair in a long braid. you also see a guy with red hair who says his name is tasuki,a guy with blue hair who says his name is chichiri,a guy with a long purple braid and says his name is nuriko. nuriko says," well who do you want to ride horses with ryuuki?" you say nuriko." you look over and see ayame already chose tamahome. she sticks out her tongue at you and you do the same cuz you got the cutest of them all nuriko! nuriko and you ride into the forest and decide to have lunch in the forest and in your head your thoughts^i like nuriko and i think im in love with him^ and nuriko says ,"you can call me nuri." you say,"okay nuri-kun." he says ,"or nuri-kun." you two both start laughing and dont notice tamahome right behind a tree watching you with nuri-kun. nuri-kun's thoughts^i just met her but shes really cute and im in love with her^ you remember what you thought and wonder if nuri-kun has the same thoughts. do you think he does?

Now, before I start with my take on a comparative essay between these two animes, let me just say that I do not aim to belittle any one of the two. I just can’t do that since I’m a big fan of the two. ^_^

The idea of comparing the two just came up when I realized that Colorcloud Palace a.k.a Saiunkoku Monogatari (Man, that was a bit hard to spell. LOL!) is, in a number of ways, similar with the Fushigi Yuugi or Curious Play. And I do not mean the story as their difference with the plot is already quite obvious from the beginning. But of course, anime fanatics can’t help but notice that the setting is both a kingdom or palace in China from a hundred of years back. I think comparing the two is quite inevitable, I’m sure I’m not the only one who noticed their ‘obvious’ similarities, right?

First off, there’s the style of drawing. I know the makers of Colorcloud Palace did not mean to make it look like Yuu Watase’s Fushigi Yuugi, it just came out that way. Perhaps it is safe to say that the illustrator of Colorcloud Palace, Kairi Yura, was inspired by the series the series. Or perhaps not, it’s just my two cents there. Anyway, inspired or not, the characters of the two animes undoubtedly look the same.





Now let’s go to the emperor of both animes. We all loved Hotohori of Fushigi Yuugi, and now (don’t deny it) we’re all beginning to love the character of Shi Ryuuki in Colorcloud Palace. Their personalities are obviously of different sides with Hotohori being all serious with everything while Shi Ryuki is loving the carefree life. But their looks - the long hair and the beautiful face (it’s funny describing men as beautiful but I can’t help it! They both have beautiful faces! Haha! ^_^V ). It’s so easy to mistake them both for one another if not just for the style their hair was designed! Hotohori loves his mane flowing but Ryuuki would rather have it ponytailed in half. Of course, if they start to speak, you’ll easily know who’s who! LOL!



Miaka Yuki and Shurei Ko could easily pass themselves off as fraternal twins! And they also exude the same auras of being light-hearted and strong! But of course, some of their personalities still differ. Miaka is a carefree little girl and easily energized by just the sight of food (who can forget that, right? Haha!) and blinded by the idea of spending her life with her only love, Tamahome (okay, I just sounded cheesy). Shurei Ko is undoubtedly on the mature side, being discipline and hard work her constant companions throughout her growing years. By the time Shurei Ko went to the palace to help the emperor ’straighten’ out his way of life and leadership, she already knows the hardships of life and so was more than prepared to help His Majesty realize the importance of being an emperor of a seemingly dying kingdom. But let’s not belittle Miaka’s knowledge of the world. After all, at the time she had been engulfed by the book into another world of the past, she was still preparing to go to a university with her best friend. What does she really know about suffering and the magical world right? It had also been her first time to experience romance and so she had been blinded by it. Shurei Ko, however, (I think) had made it a point early on with her life not to have anything to do with romance until her family’s life is financially settled. But since Colorcloud Palace has some bits of romance in its story, Shurei Ko will sooner or later welcome it in her life. Haha! I’m already making conclusions to an anime that is yet to end!



Between the two animes, if I am to be asked on what I prefer more, Colorcloud Palce will be my choice. I just love how things are going and how the story unfolds in the series. Colorcloud Palace is a relaxing anime as it does not have all the complexities of four different worlds and magic that Fushigi Yuugi is known to have. But don’t get me wrong, I once fancied it and I have to admit it was because of the romance of Miaka and Tamahome (I was still a naive little girl who dreams of romance back then! Haha!). But when Fushigi Yuugi included all the characters and the four worlds into the romance of Miaka and Tamahome, I was lost. Well, it’s not all because of the story, it was also partly because I hadn’t had the time to watch all the episodes. I still don’t have the luxury of time no with Colorcloud Palace but since I’ve discovered the geniuses of YouTube and Torrent downloads, I know I can watch it whenever I want to and whenever I have the time. Haha!

Also, Colorcloud Palace seems to be one of the animes wherein you could easily catch up with the story even though you’ve skipped an episode or two. Or perhaps it’s still too early to say. We’re still on the first season in Animax anyway. So we’ll see. I just hope it remains a simple and relaxing anime for a simple anime addict like myself who simply wants to be entertained by the big-eyed and small-lipped (is there such a word?!) characters in a Japanese cartoon. Haha! ^_^
