The story starts with the main character, Ichigo Momomiya, and her date, Masaya Aoyama, visiting a Red Data Animal museum. An earthquake strikes and Ichigo goes into a dream-like sequence. Later, Ichigo is introduced to Ryou Shirogane and Keiichiro Akasaka, and they tell Ichigo that her DNA is "infused" with the DNA of a Red Data Animal, and that she has gained special abilities and a different appearance to protect Earth from a group of aliens – Kish, Tart, Pie, and their leader Deep Blue – who wish to "reclaim" Earth. The aliens can control jellyfish-like parasites which infect animals and turns them into monsters called Chimera Anima. Ichigo fights using the alias Mew Ichigo, but she is not alone—she finds four other girls just like her, they become friends, and they call themselves Tokyo Mew Mew.

Mew Mew Girls:


Ichigo Momomiya / Mew ichigo

Ichigo is the first member of the "Mew Project," the main character of the series, and is called Zoey Hanson in the English adaptation of the anime TV show. She is a 12 year-old girl who becomes infused with the DNA of an Iriomote Wildcat, allowing her to transform into Mew Ichigo. Ichigo's personality is much like that of a main character of a shoujo manga series; enthusiastic, outgoing and at times a ditz. At first, she does not want anything to do with the Mew Project. However, she soon realizes the importance of her task and accepts her role as Mew Ichigo. Later in the series, it is revealed that ( In the anime when kissed and in the manga when she gets excited) she is transformed into a black cat.


Mint Aizawa / Mew Mint

Mint is the second member of the Mews and is called Corina Bucksworth in the English adaptation. 12 year-old Mint is infused with the DNA of a Blue Lorikeet.[6][7][8][9] She comes from a wealthy family and seems to be lazy and mean, but later it shows that she is a valuable mew. Mint is very sensitive and cares for her feelings very much. She admires Zakuro Fujiwara and respects her, treating her like she would an older sister.


Lettuce Midorikawa / Mew Lettuce

Lettuce is the third member of the Mews and is called Bridget Verdant in the English adaptation. 13 year-old Lettuce is infused with the DNA of a Finless Porpoise, which allows her to transform into Mew Lettuce with power over water. At the beginning, Lettuce can't swim. But when she jumps into water to save a small child, her legs turn into a mermaid's/porpoise tail. Although she comes from a supportive family, Lettuce is very timid and shy; after she joins the Mews she gains more confidence and pride in herself. She is also very clumsy, tending to break plates while working at Cafe Mew Mew. She is very hard-working and tries to help out her friends whenever possible.


Pudding Fong / Mew Pudding

Pudding is the fourth and youngest of the Mews, and is called Kikki Benjamin in the English adaptation. 11 year-old Pudding is infused with the DNA of a Golden Lion Tamarin, which allows her to transform into Mew Pudding and have power over earth. Pudding has a very unusual family: her mother died when she was young, and her father is on a pilgrimage to practice martial arts, and she must take care of her four brothers and sister by cooking meals and keeping the house clean. Pudding always retains her childish nature, in spite of her huge responsibility. In the manga, she has a pet monkey named An-Nin, who she is often seen playing with.


Zakuro Fujiwara / Mew Zakuro

Zakuro is the fifth and oldest of the Mews, and is called Renée Roberts in the English adaptation. 15-year-old Zakuro is a mysterious model and Mint's idol. She is infused with the DNA of a Gray Wolf which allows her to transform into Mew Zakuro. At first, Zakuro refuses to join the Mews, due to the fact that she believes that she doesn't need friends. Later, after seeing how cruelly the aliens treated humans, she decides to make an exception for them. She does not talk much, is serious, and is anti-social to the customers at Cafe Mew Mew. This helps disguise the fact that one as famous as she works at a cake shop. However, she is very kind to her friends, and has been known to give advice to Ichigo on the subject of love. She says that once one of the other Mew Mew's falls in love, she'll give her advice to them as well.


Berry Shirayuki / Mew Berry

Berry is the manga only character in Tokyo Mew Mew A La Mode. She is 12 years oldand a first year middle school student. She is infused with Andean Mountain Cat and Amami Rabit. She have a R2003 a new design of R2000 (Masha), she later names it Ucha. While playing hooky from school to go on a "date" with Tasuku, Berry is attacked by a Chimera Anima. Transforming into Mew Berry, Berry defeats it. She is natural blonde and her eyes ae brown but change to red when she is in her mew form. She is friendy with the other mews and she is the leader of their leader in A La Mode.


Ringo Akai / Mew Ringo

Ringo is a character in the Tokyo Mew Mew video game for Playstation. She appears in the manga only in the Petite Mew Mew side story in Tokyo Mew Mew a la Mode volume 2. In the videogame, the Mews meet Ringo while visiting a nature reserve island. Ringo has a brother named Mashio who is a ranger on the reserve and bears a resemblance to Masaya Aoyama. The name "Akai Ringo" sounds like the Japanese for "red apple." Her Mew Aqua pendant necklace was given to her by her dead mother. She is infused with the Humboldt Penguin. Her attack is actually a healing technique. She can somehow understand animals. Before Ringo met the Mew Mews, she had no friends other than her penguin, and so was a bit shy at first. She is only 10 years old, childish and energetic, but also very gentle and caring.

About their Friends

Masaya Aoyama


At first Masaya is Ichigo's crush and later her boyfriend. He is called Mark in the English adaptation and his last name is never revealed. Masaya is popular with the girls, with a crowd of them always coming to the gym to watch him do kendo. He is also concerned about the Earth's environment. He acts in a generous manner and is very understanding. Masaya is also very smart and is known for his long talks about nature.

The Blue knight

The Blue Knight is the mysterious ally of the Tokyo Mew Mew team, who claims that he was born to protect Mew Ichigo, the main hero of the story. He comes to her rescue numerous times during the series. Despite bearing resemblance to an the aliens due to his pointy ears, he does not appear to be a part of the aliens' team and for a long time neither the Mew Mews nor their antagonists knew his true identity. He later turn out to be Masaya Aoyama

Ryou Shirogane


He is the very-rich owner of Café Mew Mew and is called Elliot Grant in the English adaptation. Ryou is a genius and is the first person to be injected with animal DNA, as he injected himself to ensure the safety of the Mew Project. He is a mysterious person and seems to be careless.


Keiichiro Akasaka


He is the gentleman of the males, known to be feminine and kind, and is called Wesley J. Coolridge III in the English adaptation. An old friend of Ryou's late parents, Keiichiro assumed the role of Ryou's guardian after the couple's deaths. He also helps to manage Café Mew Mew, and is Ryou's partner in the Mew Project.

Tasuku Meguro


Tasuku Meguro is Berry's best friend and later boyfriend in Tokyo Mew Mew a la Mode. He i also a waiter at Mew Mew cafe. When he finds out that Berry has become a Mew Mew, he is quick to accept it. He is deceived by the Duke making him hate Berry, but Berry is able to pull him out of the darkness. He is 12 years old and his motto is "Berry is my priority".

Masha


Masha is a robot created by Ryou to detect chimera animas and mew aquas. Originally called by her model number of R2000, Ichigo renames her "Masha" after her crush Masaya. Masha likes the new name and likes being with Ichigo. In addition to detecting the chimera animas, Masha eats the jelly-fish like parasites that come out of the victims after the Mew Mews defeat them. When the Mew Mew defeat a Chimera Anima, Masha eats the jellyfish-like parasites that come out of the infected animals, plants, and humans. She can also merge with mew aqua found by the Mew Mews to transform into the Mew Aqua Rod, allowing the Mew Mew to perform the Ribbon Aqua Drops healing attack.

Ucha


Ucha is the second robot created by Ryou. Appearing only in Tokyo Mew Mew a la Mode, the R3000 is given to Berry Shirayuki who names him Ucha. Ucha has similar abilities to Masha, however it can also speak in complete sentences and tends to complain a lot. It also has a different appearance, resembling a strawberry with bunny ears, and can transform into Berry's staff weapon.

Antagonists

Kish

Named after the unfamiliar food item Quiche, called Dren in the English adaptation. He is one of the aliens attempting to reclaim the earth. He seems to harbor strong feelings for Ichigo, as their first encounter Kish is stealing a kiss from her.


Tart

A young, hyper alien who came to help Kish defeat the Mews, and to reclaim Earth, called Tarb in the English adaptation. He does not see the Mew Mews as a challenge, but particularlly dislikes Ichigo. However, he has a soft spot for Pudding. He is rather rude and acts similar to a toddler.

Pie

Serious, analytical, and very dedicated in his pursuit of the Mews so that he may reclaim his Alien's planet. He controls germ-like Chimera Animas, and has a fan that allows him to use wind and thunder attacks. In the English adaptation, he is called Sardon.


Chimera Anima

Monsters created when small jellyfish-like parasites possess an animal, a plant, or a human spirit stolen from people by the aliens that turns them into monsters, called Predasites in the English adaptation. They are under the control of whoever creates them.
